I feel your frustration. Quilting should be fun, but we do get to rip more than we want. lol I love the LC blocks, but haven't done many. The first time I did one, we made a copy of the block pattern & taped in a small piece of the material that went in each area. I , also, wrote in the number sequence of the sewing. I was doing a "quilt as you go", so couldn't chain piece. As I sewed, I turned that piece of paper every time I sewed on a new fabric strip. The key was to get the first 4 pieces with the red in the center & two darks together on joining sides of the center, then two lights on the other sides of the center. Yours, unfortunately, has 3 lights on the red center & 1 dark. Hope that makes sense. Your quilt color choices will look gorgeous once you get one going right.
Just picture your block with the red & light in the center ripped out, then replaced in the block with the red in the dark blue corner. Then the only other piece that would need to be moved is the last dark on the top, to the bottom. That would put all the darks together & all the lights together. Probably too much info. Keep up the good work! |
i don't believe you have said what is going wrong. explain it for us
I took a class in precision piecing recently and the instructor said your piecing is only as good as the last seam you sewed. |
keep with it, do one block at a time, rip one out, and finish that one and so on.

when I learned to do the log cabin the instructor had us put each dark and light of the same length in a baggie (starting after the middle) when you picked up your piece whether dark or light you should be sewing over 2 seams then it is on the correct side. We did this as a chain until the bag was empty. Then went to the next baggie (size strip) and continued. I think as long as you look to see that you are always sewing over 2 seams you will be OK. This may have muddied it more for you. But it helped me, course that was hands on instruction.

Here is the wall hanging made of 4 log cabin blocks and 4 courthouse steps blocks. I love working with the log cabin blocks.

I thought log cabins were supposed to be done in either a clock-wise or counter clockwise rotation - not both. Looks to me like after your third strip you switched directions from CCW to CW? Maybe I'm the one whose all mixed up =---= I don't know - just my humble opinion.

Can you just take the top strip Dark and move it to the bottom, that way you have followed the color placement all thru the block ?
|
slow down and stop and figure out what you are doing that causes the problem and then fix it.

Go to the main part of this forum and look for brown log cabin top is done, open that up and look at hers, maybe you can see where you are going wrong.

Are you left handed? I am and I could not get the log cabin at all. I have an unfinished one, as it just sends me screaming to the Vodka. And I don't drink!
