I haven't actually made that unit, but it looks doable on paper.

I have EQ8 and tend to take the block into this program to resize and then go into the print section for the cutting instructions. Works for me. I can also make some of the blocks into paper piecing blocks if I choose to. Love this program.

I am quite the newbie here so don't know what PPing or Eq8 is. It's like all those abbreviations people use and I have to try to figure out!

PPing is Paper Piecing (or sometimes refereed to as foundation piecing) A block is broken down into sewable sections and printed out. Those pieces of paper are then used as a foundation to construct the block. Fabric is placed on the back and sewn in the seam lines on the front - when the block is completed the paper is removed (carefully) and the resulting sewn block is the size of the "foundation" that was initially printed out. I have included a pic below of sashing that I did with paper piecing.

EQ8 is "Electric Quilt 8", which is a a computer program where you can design blocks and entire quilts. It is the program that I used to give you the "ugly" cutting numbers for your 10" block. In addition to cutting directions, EQ8 can provide the user with yardage for quilts and the ability to print out foundation paper for paper piecing. I used EQ to create those pieces for the sashing in my picture

edited to add - if you would like to try to paper piece those blocks at 10" I would be happy to print that out for you to try!!

CheladaMama ... Sorry, I was the one who got you lost on "PPing"!
PPing is great for getting perfect points and precise sizing.

I started by making four of this block. Then put them together for a Mug Rug.
This site is a great resource for both PP blocks, pieced blocks and lots more!

Keep in mind there are lots of different ways to do PPing, just as there are for most things in quilting .... and life!! :)

As you go along, pick up a bit from this person, that blog, the Quilting Board, YouTube, or wherever ... and develop your own twists, doing what works best for you!

Thank you all so very much for the advice and ideas! I decided to go with appliques from my own drawings as I discovered I am more creative than I thought. Who knew?
I have drawn out my appliques and am going to use freezer paper. I will probably be back here for more advice but for now, I promise to show you the finished product. I have a feeling we will all be surprised!
