I must have some bad math skills because I don't see how one can get 7 FQ out of 1 3/4 yards of fabric. Isn't a fat quarter 18" x 22"? I'm thinking 1 1/2 yard for 6 FQ, to get 7FQ you'd need another 1/2 yard piece. Otherwise you'd would get a fat 8th out of the remaining 1/4 yard left from 1 3/4 yards of fabric. Same goes for the 19 FQ's, you can't get a fat quarter out of a 1/4 of fabric.

I agree with your calculations. If you find out differently please share. Thanks. Diane

I will agree with you. It will take 2 yds to equal 7 FQ and you will have 1 FQ left over.

There are times that a "fat" quarter yard works better than a "regular" one-fourth yard of fabric - or the other way around - but there would be the same number of square inches in both of them (assuming they are cut from the same piece of fabric).

Like a hallway that is 3 x 30 feet has the same area as a small room that is 9 x 10 feet.

Somewhere in this thread we found that there will be pieces cut from those fat quarters. It could be that those same pieces could be cut from fabric that is a skinny quarter, too. We need to see the pattern and find out what is needed.

My calculations were assuming there were 4 fat quarters in a yard of fabric (presumably 44-45 inch width fabric). I didn't calculate what a fat quarter actually is but took the "4 to a yard" as a given. Using this assumption, if you need 7 fat quarters, one yard would be 4 of those 7, and 3/4 yard would be the remaining 3, right?

In any case, I will pad my fabric purchases, when I buy, because I live in fear of running out of fabric that I cannot, later, find again. I'd always rather have too much than too little and can find uses for anything leftover.

A drawing of the difference between fat quarters and skinny-regular 1/4 yard cuts - it may help - (or it may not)

rjwilder, I agree with you completely. What a number of you are assuming is not correct. 3 fat quarters might equal 3/4 yard of fabric in square inches, but 3/4 yd. will not yield 3 fat quarters. You will get 2 fat 1/4s and one linear quarter (9") from 3/4 of a yard. If you need to cut pieces of a certain size, a strip 9" x wof might not be enough. To get an uneven number of fat 1/4s, you must buy full yards, and you will have a fat 1/4 left over. I hope this makes sense and helps you.

I do "get" those that "disagreed" with the majority

If one wants to get 7 fat quarters from one piece of fabric, one does need two yards of fabric. (Actually, a tiny bit more) - and there will be one fat quarter "left over".

One will end up with 8 pieces, but if one wants the length - or are cutting for kits or some such thing - that is what one would need.

But - assuming that one is cutting the fabric from the same width of fabric - 1-3/4 yards of fabric will have the same number of square inches as 7 fat quarters.
