I'll have to try that. I was using a brand new ruler last week and it slipped and the needle hit it. Broke the needle, chipped the side of my ruler and scared the heck out of me!

Great tip thank you for sharing

kaykwilts 04-26-2011 06:51 AM

ok...so can one use it on any ruler...not just the ones you use on a long arm? If so, seems this might be a great way for me to help my young daughters learn to cut with ruler and rotary without the slip....

fontmomma 04-26-2011 06:53 AM

I use Invisa grip-a rubbery plastic type grip. You get a oarge roll and can cut it to the size you need. It strethes and sticks to the back of the ruler to prevent sliding. A little goes a long way.

I use Invisa-grip- a rubbery type plastic that come in a roll so you cut just the amount you need. I is easy to pull off if you don't want it on any more. A little goes a long way and can stretch to fit the ruler.

Great tip!! I would have never thought of that!

Sorry, QuilterChick, you missed it! MQX is the Machine Quilters' Exposition, which is held in April of each year (one session on the east coast, and one on the west coast). This was the second year of a five-year stint at the RI Convention Center. You can put yourself on their e-mail list at www.mqxshow.com to get advance notice of next year's happenings.

Can one use this on 'regular' rulers? I would think the chemical in the glue might smear or dissolve the 1/4" markings on a rotary ruler?

AnitaSt 04-26-2011 09:07 AM

I'm trying this out. I have some of the sandpaper dots and they do block your view. And I've scratched some of my other rulers when they were stacked under the ones with the sandpaper or hung behind the sandpaper ones on my pegboard.

I have Invisigrip on one ruler and it still slips for me.

Hmmmm, who would have thought this would work? Rubber cement, I will surely have to get me some and try this one too. :-)

girlsfour 04-26-2011 09:14 AM

Makes sense! Thanks!

Divokittysmom 04-26-2011 09:56 AM

If someone tries rubber cement on a regular rotary cutting ruler could you please post the results. It sounds like a great idea. I also use invis a grip but it still some time slips.

quiltmom04 04-26-2011 10:11 AM

Hot glue does the same thing!

That is what I have been applying it to - works fantastically - Esp great on Quilt in a Day Rulers that are shinny and slide all around with out this application.

Donna C, I'm also from Rhode Island. Heard the show was great. Had an operation a month ago and it would have been too much walking. Do you belong to a quilt guild in RI?

It may be similar to what is used to repair bicycle tubes or inflatable pools if that helps. The glue that holds the patches on, that is.

jojosnana 04-26-2011 06:08 PM

What a great idea.....I think I may have some in my scrapbooking supplies too.....I will put it on my look-for list.

malega 04-26-2011 06:31 PM

Don't know the brand name, but you can find it in the office supply department of most stores.

You probably can. It's used for lots of arts and crafts items.

Ms Elaine Va 04-27-2011 08:11 PM

I saw a video on using a506 spray glue on the back of the ruler but my LQS owner said NO WAY I will try the rubber cement. My rulers always slip and the owner said I needed her cutting class for $25. I could buy lots of rubber cement for that much
Thanks for the tip.

connie d 04-27-2011 08:41 PM

Rubber cement who would of thought, and I have some with my glues and paints. I'll have to try. :):):)

IBQLTN 04-28-2011 05:29 AM

bought some yesterday, will see if I can try it out tonight.

He laughed - and commented it was nothing that a little "old fashion" Rubber Cement would not solve - he continued to say that all you need to do is spread a little rubber cement on the back of the ruler and let it dry completely.

The up side of this technique is that it is cheap, easy to see through, rubs off the ruler easily and will not harm the fabric.

I tried this today on one of my rulers and it worked fantastically!! Best I can see is that it is a win win situation. I have tried the clear rubber stick ones (which were thick, the ruler did not grip where I need it to continuously along the edge because it was not flat and and only worked sometimes) , the sand paper ones (which blocked the visual on the seams) and others - but this is so easy, the ruler stayed flat and I could see through it.

Try it you will be amazed!

Great tip!

Have put rubber cement on my ruler over an hour ago! How long does it take to dry completely?

gale 04-30-2011 03:03 PM

It'll always feel sort of tacky.

And does it keep picking up lint an cat hair?!

TonnieLoree 05-01-2011 04:45 PM

I had to wait for over a week to try this due to finances, but buying that little bottle of Elmers Contact Cement was by far one of the best quilting aids I have ever spent money on. I went to my LQS today and told the owner what I did, and she shook her head saying "who would have thunk it?" It is amazing. I found mine at Walmart in the Crafting aisle that has stencils. I originally thought it would be in office supplies; I was wrong.

Kitsie 05-01-2011 04:47 PM

I found mine at my local Safeway, but after 2 days, I'm still finding it sticky and picking up lint.

Will keep on using it, though. Better than anything else!
