I do bridalalterations and have used baby wipes to get the markers out. I used to use them for marking my hems and such.

Well, they certainly are hard to wash out of the kids' clothes!! LOL
I use baby wipes for lots of stains. Gets makeup and lipstick off fabric very well. |

Mine washed out. I used orange and blue.
|
can i put detergent in the washer and let it run? or will that set what's left??
|
WD40?
http://www.ehow.com/how_5891315_crayola-out-fabric.html and liquid detergent. sigh. after this my crayola markers and crayons are being tossed. i had a blue Dritz wash out marker but it dryed up on me before i finished marking my border. live and learn-again!! |
I just washed mine in the washing machine, no problem. Don't dry it though, if there is any left it will set the markers.
Try a wet Mr. Clean Magic Eraser...it works great for pencil marks. |
They do wash out beautiully, EXCEPT the yellow one. It will turn brown.

ha, if i'd used the Frixion I'd probably be trying to get black out. the border was yellow fabric so I didn't need that dark of a marker. still haven't tried those pens.
|
well i got out 95% of the green crayola marker lines. yellow shows it still a bit but not much. I'll see how it looks tomorrow when it's dry.
after soaking, i applied WD40 and liquid dishwasher soap, rubbed that in and washed with Oxy clean again. then next time around i sprayed the marks with Shout Advanced and washed with Oxy clean again. looking so much better. tomorrow is another day. |
I used a purple, broad-tip Crayola washable marker, wet it with baby wipes, rubbed it very well with a Shout stick and let it soak in the washer for a while. Came right out.
|
OOOOOOOH scary! I taught preschool for too long to believe the WASHABLE designation on stuff, especially washable tempera paint! I'll just keep using the more expensive ones that are made for quilting.....
|
Yellow in any kind of marking can be a problem. I have used the yellow chalk and it was so hard to remove, that I vowed never to use it again.

Ever try the FRIXION gel pens made by Pilot? They are great marking pens (I've only used them on cotton fabric). The marks come right out with your iron. I found the pens at my office supply store.
|
i kind of though cold water would help set the colors...when i've used crayola markers i've always then washed...yes...washed...not just soaked but put in the washer...with warm water and detergent...all marks came out. but i always test every fabric i'm going to mark because just because it came out of this peice does not mean it will come out of the one next to it. i don't know that just sitting in cold water is going to accomplish anything
|
You should--they're great. I've used black pen on yellow cotton--came right out with the iron :)
|
I am soooo glad I read this today. However, if I had read it three days ago, I would not have been using yellow chalk to mark a dark border.

They have a purple marker that is air soluble.
Baby wipes also takes paint off and think we are using them on the bottoms of babies. Faces too. |
The red crayola wash out marker did not wash out for me. So glad I did a test before using them.
|
I use the markers only not the crayons and I use all colors some are even scented. Sofar so good done multiple quilts but like some one else mentioned I just pop the whole quilt in the washer with regular detergent and wash it on warm. Take it out and check if it is all gone and in the dryer it then goes. The first quilts I did this with I washed with cold water only, no detergent, and there was some ghosting in the very light creme border. I then washed on warm again with detergent. The last of the marks then came out. I would think not to dry or iron any marks. I have a front loader washing machine.

I read on here a while back that Pilot makes a gel pen that's erasable with friction. I think it's called "frixion". Haven't yet had a chance to try it out. Anybody else?
|
Should have read all the posts...
I just bought some pens at the quilt show this weekend by Pilot. It is called a Frixion pen. It disappears with heat (120 degrees). You hand wouldn't be hot enough to make it disappear like some of the products I've used and it's a pen so would have good clean lines. I can't wait to try it on my next quilt since I want to learn to do something besides meandering! |
Crayola says their markers are washable. If you have problems with them check their web site or contact them, maybe they have some help for you.

I was so hopeful that they would have been the utopia of marking. I could imagine myself doing some very complicated lines with them. |
Hi! I love this site, and have learned so much from all you quilters. Thank you.
I just read the question about washable markers. I have used the CRAYOLA washable markers (thin line, not wide) for several years. LOVE THEM!!! The directions on the back state that you MUST use HOT WATER ONLY when removing the marks. I have never had a problem, just wash in machine using hot water (no soap or detergent) I add the quilt and use the gentle cycle and check to see all marks are gone, then rinse, and a quick regular wash then into the dryer. |
