I've made a couple of blocks (antique hand method) and have really enjoyed doing all the embroidery and embellishments; the project is on hold at the moment because I'm doing a silk ribbon embroidery course in mid-march and what to incorporate that as well.

The joy of crazy for me is that it is SO unstructured. I just sat with a box of scraps (all kinds of fabric, not just cottons - DH lost a silk tie :D ) and added them randomly; but it's the embellishment that's the real fun part; I bought one of those cases intended for screws and nails to store all my bits and bobs!

Those are absolutely beautiful K. I started one with silk pieces and old neckties. It was fun and I have'nt even looked at it for ever. Thanks for reminding me! Keep up the great job and keep us posted.

Thanks Izy for posting this site. I have been collecting ribbon for a crazy quilt.

collettekay thanks for starting this thread.

K3n I love your blocks.

I have been dragging my feet to start my crazy quilt. I have brought the books, read them. I just need to get to it. I have been collecting neckties for my fabric. I need to get them out and start. I'm thinking I want to washing them first. Distress them and let them shrink. See which ones survive. :-) Does anyone have any advise? I hope mine turn out as pretty as K3n.

sewsewquilter 02-17-2009 06:02 PM

Janstar I love your block. I posted before seeing yours. Did you washing your ties first? Daffy duck just is too cool. :D

Marcia 02-17-2009 06:19 PM

Great thread with a lot of good info--thanks!!

K-I love your crazy quilt blocks--not OTT at all!!

Janstar 02-17-2009 07:20 PM

Sewsew, no I didn't wash them. I figured it would never be larger than a wall hanging most likely. My DH and I looked at all the thrift stores to collect ties. Was fun! Thank you for the comment.

k3n 02-18-2009 01:12 AM

I also used scraps of velvet from some of my daughter's baby dresses, some satiny stuff (sure it's poly) and all kinds of stuff I could forage (DH kindly donated a gold silk tie!) All the usual quilting rules just fly out of the window! Any fabrics I couldn't turn under, eg the velvet, I just covered the raw edge with the next patch or a strip of ribbon. And as for the embellishments - if ever you get fed up with buying fabric (???!) this opens up a whole new shopping prospect! I've even used bits of broken old earrings, and I got a big bag of old beads for next to nothing from a brocante (French jumble sale).

Have fun!

I did a few patches with ugly fabrics and a new machine using all the fancy stitches for embellishments and the pets LOVE it!
I haven't tried a really NICE one yet, but have been collecting for YEARS! LOL  This might (you notice, I said might,) be a good place to use some of my treasures. They would make a nice album cover, for the scrap bookers! Or an eyeglass cover! Or something not too large and overwhelming! Have many books on the subject, but I am spending WAAY too much time on this site to get all my quilting done. Choices, What's a gal gonna do! :?

k3n 02-18-2009 11:04 AM

I'll ask the girl at my quilt group if she minds me taking a pic of her tote bag to post - it's a really cute way to use a crazy block.

I too, have been collecting satins and velvets etc....haven't snitched a tie yet, lol. I also have some of the silk ribbons, but they are so bee u ti ful, and my hand embr. is rusty...not much since a teen  ...I think many of us, are accomplishing a lot of stuff, just not all quilting...but, alas, it has become a true love for me...but, I am supposed to be 'banking' and 'doing bills' right now,....so....loved everybody's pics...oh, gets my motor running, but still spinning my wheels on this, cause life is calling me to do other stuff, before lights go out and phone gets cut off. gotta talk to my chilluns and grandbabies....YIKES, grandbabies - phone....gotta go! :D

Re old ties. Several years ago I bought 2 big BOXES of ties from (I don't remember). I tossed them in the washing machine, figuring that the ones that didn't make it should be thrown away anyway. They all survived, and most of the stains came out. I didn't put them in the dryer - didn't have THAT much courage! You should have seen my clothes line! My husband thought it was so funny that he took pictures. If I knew where they were, I'd post them

Next came the BIG job of unsewing them and removing the interlining. I sorted them @ color and foundation pieced a bunch of burgundy and gold blocks, intending to make a quilt. That turned out to be the year that my granddaughter asked for a red robe, so I used the blocks on the robe. Fortunately, she asked for an extra big robe, and she hasn't grown much, so she's still using it!

Foundation piecing is perfect for old ties, because they are made on the bias.

Well, I asked the girl at quilt group if I could show you all her bag and she was pleased to be 'famous'! So here it is. The black fabric is a kind of velour and I think it gives a lovely, antiquey victoriana effect. Her name is Marie-France, by the way. In the photo you can see she's embroidered her initials on one of the patches.

Mousie 02-22-2009 04:14 PM

forgot to say, k, that I love your crazy quilting too, lol. I have a small bin that i have labeled just for crazy quilting, sometime in the future. Probably a tote bag or pillow will be my first project. I was given a lot of 'embellishments' by a friend. Now I owe her a lap quilt. Hmmm, could use some of those hex's I was talking bout. woo hoo! thanks for jogging my light bulb, k!
