What do you use to get out creases in fabric? I have a piece of fabric that has the crease edge from the bolt and it doesn't iron out. I was going to use Best Press to see if that works. Sometimes it doesn't for me. I have very little of this fabric left and it has a crease in it no matter how I cut the block.

alikat110 07-16-2011 07:36 PM

Starch!

thequilterslink 07-16-2011 07:38 PM

someone told me white vinegar works, i havn't tried it tho

auntpiggylpn 07-16-2011 07:39 PM

Use the best press!!! I use it all the time and it takes out the wrinkles and creases that are even left after washing the fabrics.

nlgh 07-16-2011 07:41 PM

I've always had good results from using white vinegar on cotton material to get creases out.

This block will be used on a crib bumper. Do you think the vinegar smell will stay on the fabric. I guess it will have to be washed? I think I would have to hand wash the block then put the bumper together.

sharon b 07-16-2011 07:54 PM

Get the fabric damp and press it - more then just spraying it but less then soaking wet , does that make sense and make sure the iron is set on Cotton

quiltgal6 07-16-2011 07:59 PM

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I have enough of the fabric left over with the cease to try all of your ideas. I will see which one works best.

White Vinegar dissapates. We used this all of the time in the garment industry. It works quite well for closing needle holes too. (They suck up like if you were to eat a lemon).

Downey Wrinkle Release works freat. Look for it where spray starch, etc. Are located in stores.

connie_1936 07-16-2011 08:40 PM

let us know what works

quilting.addict 07-16-2011 08:46 PM

I just today had to deal with a really hard crease in a piece of fabric being made into kitchen curtains. I take a wash cloth, run it under water, squeeze it just until it's not dripping. Then rub it along the crease and press it. I then give it one shot of Best Press.

tammy cosper 07-16-2011 08:51 PM

Put the fabric in the freezer and let it freeze. Then take out and take to ironing board and iron. That should do it.

Gladys 07-16-2011 09:00 PM

Wow what wonderful suggestions. The only thing I'd ever tried was vinegar and it did work.

GV09 07-16-2011 09:14 PM

WOW!
This did not know! Great tips!
I used vinegar to wash cloth and avoid rubbing off! Now I use hot water and salt!
Thanks for all the data!
A hug!

Another vote for starch.

Granchris 07-16-2011 11:18 PM

I use Downy Wrinkle Releaser. Spray it on, let sit a few seconds and then iron. If you prewash your fabric open it up and don't iron that crease back in just finger press. If you don't prewash just open up use this product all the way down and then fold and finger press, not iron hard down. Works for me anyway.

MelodyWB 07-17-2011 12:06 AM

I hand wash fabric like that and put it outside until it's damp..come in and iron it!! (Steam)

I use white vinegar to help creases stay longer when putting creases in slacks, etc.

grumpy90650 07-17-2011 03:58 AM

cant wait to see what works for you!!!

Quiltbeagle 07-17-2011 04:00 AM

I use vinegar. That stuff works for everything!

Vinegar does work; it is such a great product for so many things.

I am going to put this to the ultimate test. I've got some needle hole that need closing. I have never heard of this!!! Thanks so much for the info. I've been wondering what I was going to do!!!

kskwilter 07-17-2011 04:38 AM

I've used vinegar and water mixture (about 2-1 vinegar to water) to either take out a crease...or put on in (pants)...Sometimes it takes full stregth vinegar...I put it in a spray bottle...

chrisqlt 07-17-2011 05:35 AM

I do that wash cloth thing too and it works well for me. I also love the Niagra non aerosal spray starch and it's much less $$$$ than Best Press. It's lightly scented and seems nice to me, as well as good results. Find it in the laundry supply aisle at your grocery store.

Tudey 07-17-2011 05:35 AM

Downy Wrinkle Releaser

eltakay 07-17-2011 06:09 AM

Faultless Magic Sizing in a spray can - not the starch, the fabric finish. It's economical, has a pleasant fragrance, and works for me every time.

I was reading through to see if anyone else suggested the Magic Sizing, and there it was the last one I read. It works great!

Oh, and your first message, welcome!

OneMoreQuilt 07-17-2011 06:13 AM

I love this spray....someone on here gave the recipe....I'm sorry I don't remember who!!! 2 cups distilled water, 1/2 cup Vodka, 10 - 12 drops of pure essential oil (your choice)--- mix, put in spray bottle.

Joan 07-17-2011 06:14 AM

I use Sizing (cheaper than Best Press)

Wow, though, I love the idea about white vinegar.

This Board is so great, it should be required reading for ALL quilters.......the little tips we learn make life so much easier!

Just-Lee 07-17-2011 06:15 AM

I spray stubborn creases with water, either from my iron spray button or the spray bottle I keep next to it, and use steam. Always works for me :)

sewmorethings 07-17-2011 06:20 AM

I have a seamstress II iron from years ago, it takes creases out of any fabric. I don't know if you can still get them or not. It is just a steam iron with a small area for steam to come out on the point of the iron. It does a great job. You may be able to use just a fabric steamer

Lori S 07-17-2011 06:27 AM

The fibers need to be uncompressed. The fold in purchased fabric are mechanically folded with high heat and pressure. The fold compresses the natural fiber. One way is to soak the fabic in water , the longer its been folded the longer it should soak. Iron silightly moist. It is always a concern when buying true vintage ... the fold may never be completely removed.
Think about it like paper (made from natural fibers) can you ever really get a fold out? If you rehydrate the fiber and press you can . FYI some fibers if folded do get a permanent crease.
Remember to refold your quilts ever few months.

You can also get Wrinkle Release products at the Dollar Stores.

I have heard that crib bumpers are considered to be unsafe for babies......................!

irma tapia 07-17-2011 07:07 AM

what is best press, is it a spray?

feffertim 07-17-2011 07:13 AM

best press works for me

I would not make a bummer that could not be washed for a child's crib. With all the stuff that can get on it, it really needs to be able to be washed. Either using starch or vinegar you should launder both out.

Mary Ellen's Best Spray. . . yes it is a spray and I get mine at Hancock Fabrics and quilt shops I can't remember if I've ever seen it at Joann's. It makes your fabric so nice and smooth without making it super stiff and flakey! I love it! I use it for ironing everything, not just quilting stuff!
