I almost had a heartattack today! Here's the story if you care to read it....

I ordered cow fabric from bighornquilts.com and received it yesterday. Today the whole family went on an errand run to Wal-mart etc. I took my fabric to get coordinating fabrics at Wal-mart and then put all my fabric in 1 bag and sat it on the floor in the van between the 2 girls. All was well. I was excited and planning out my quilt. Then....

We made a couple other stops and then stopped at Sheetz to get some lunch. After we ate I thought "gee, now's a good time to throw out some of the garbage I had collected from the van and put in an old wal-mart bag." "The garbage can is right here by the door" So I did....

We then went to the video store to rent a movie to watch tonight and when I got back in the van I sat the movies down where I had put my fabric. But...the bag wasn't there...

At first I just thought that it had gotten moved and quickly looked through the van. Then, it hit me....

I had thrown out the bag of fabric with the garbage!

I made my husband drive back to Sheetz and had the manager help me find my fabric in the garbage. Rubber gloves and all! I was so relieved that we were able to find it. My husband was relieved that he didn't have to climb in the dumpster (the can hadn't been emptied.)

Oh well. There is now a very interesting story behind the quilt-to-be. I just make sure my aunt knows that I've washed the fabric and hope that it doesn't make her shy away from using the quilt.

Thanks for reading and I'm sure laughing if you've made it this far.

mgshaw 08-16-2008 06:36 PM

That is too funny! But I would have done the same thing!!

CissyQuilts 08-16-2008 06:40 PM

 I'm glad you found your fabric. I'd be willing to go dumpster diving for fabric too.

Moonpi 08-16-2008 06:49 PM

Compulsive cleaning will bite you in the butt every time! Glad it worked out for you.

collettakay 08-16-2008 06:53 PM

The thing is garbage NEVER gets taken out of the van and the one time I did......

Barb M 08-16-2008 07:05 PM

Oh my gosh!!!!!!!! lol lol Yeah, that's something i'd do lol lol Thanks sooo much for the laugh, almost 100F today, and sooo needed a laugh :)

zyxquilts 08-16-2008 11:28 PM

Celeste 08-16-2008 11:55 PM

Phew!!!!! Thanks for sharing!

barnbum 08-17-2008 04:17 AM

 I'm so glad you let us know it was a happy ending before we started reading. Saved on heart race.

Craftybug 08-17-2008 04:35 AM

Colleta, the minute I got to the part that you started picking up the garbage in the van I knew what you had done. You are just to funny. Don't feel bad girl, I have done the sane thing inside my house, I start cleaning and putting stuff away and something always ends up in the garbage when is not supposed to.

beachlady 08-17-2008 05:12 AM

So glad you found the fabric. I can just imagine your panic!

Knot Sew 08-17-2008 05:14 AM

I have thrown away all kinds of things in the darn plastic bags....I am trying real hard to use my "green" cloth bags....I wouldn't toss those :D

Bevanger 08-17-2008 05:28 AM

I'm chuckling only because I've done it before, but not with fabric.. Good thing you found it.......

Rose Marie 08-17-2008 07:01 AM

Reminds me of the time when I had a trash can by my sewing machine and somehow my walking foot fell into it and I ended up throwing it away.
Had to buy a new one, bummer.

quiltsRfun 08-17-2008 07:39 AM

I'm glad things worked out for you. I had a similar incident with a dumpster and some wedding photos/negatives that didn't turn out so well. Happy quilting!

Marcia 08-17-2008 07:48 AM

That was a close one!! I am glad you realized it in time to have a happy ending to your story!

quiltwoman 08-17-2008 08:18 AM

Gosh, that is awful!! I thought only things like that happened to me

sewnsewer2 08-17-2008 08:59 AM

OMG, I'm glad you found it! That just makes the story of the quilt more interesting.

PamH 08-17-2008 09:41 AM

   Glad you found it!! I bet you were relieved the trash men hadn't been by yet.

vicki reno 08-17-2008 12:56 PM

Is the quilt name going to be "The Dumpster Dive Quilt"? I am SO glad you found it!

collettakay 08-17-2008 04:43 PM

Vicki-that's probably how I'll always think of it! lol

Jean Mathews 08-18-2008 12:54 PM

Oh, that sounds like something I would do.

tarib 08-18-2008 01:09 PM

See thats what you get for being to neat  I would have been sick. Thankfully you found it :!:

Always happens, the one time you decide to do something right. One night at work, (hospital) I had one very hard patient that I pretty much spent all night in his room. As we were charting a nurse asked me if my ring was supposed to look like it did, or was something wrong with it? It looked like a tooth was missing, the middle diamand and setting were gone. We spent the next hour changing the man's bed, dusting his floors, going through the garbage. Still couldn't find the darn thing. I remembered that we had ordered a pizza for break and I had gone in my purse to get money to pay for my share. When I opened my purse there it was laying on the bottom. My husband teased me and said I was trying to get a bigger diamond, my original ring had 5 diamond chips in settings to make them look bigger. Several years later I did get a bigger diamond in my ring for our 20th wedding anniversary. The poor patient properly wondered why he was turned so much and had his bed made twice in one shift when he didn't soil the sheets.............

I'm sooo relieved that most of the stories here have happy endings! I also was glad to have the chuckle for the day...and I thought I was the queen of this kind of thing....

Glad it worked out for you...and I looked at bighorn at their cow fabric and I like it! I hadn't seen it before and I like cows.

Debra Mc 08-20-2008 07:40 AM

When my mother & dad moved to the farm, she packed a bunch of Tupperware in a black garbage bag and you can guess where it all ended up. Luckily I was selling at the time and could replace it all for cost. I always check the garbage before it goes out the door. I have had to go thru it too many times. Here's what I do. When I buy something like fabric or especially small stuff, I take a tote bag and put the items in it till I get home. That way I'm sure where it is. That's what you call sweating bullets. Glad you found it.

Quilt4u 08-20-2008 09:21 AM

Don't feel bad. I did the same thing. Only with Buttons. I was cleaning my sewingroom the day after I had bought these one of a kind buttons that a 9year old girl made by hand . Well you got the idea but I did not know until 3 days later and the trash had been picked up. No buttons.

reneebobby 08-20-2008 09:38 AM

Stupid garbage. lol I'm so glad that you found your fabric. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to keep it a secert?

Cordelia 08-20-2008 10:09 AM

It's not like you're the only one that's done that. I had a bag of items I purchased. I usually use those plastic bags as garbage bags for my car.

Only I had an envelope of money from the bank machine. Something like a hundred bucks that I carelessly threw in the garbage bag too and threw it in the trash.

It wasn't until I got in a store and needed it to buy something did I realize what happened and went back to the trash can to get it.

I was lucky to get my bag with the money back.

hey it has a good ring to it :) And the story to go with it is great!

Janstar 08-31-2008 05:44 PM

So glad you got it back. Are'nt our husbands great? I had just picked up my packet of fabric and instructions from the quilt store and we had to stop at Walmart to match some fabric so I carried it into the store. They didn't have a match so we picked up some items and went toward home several miles away. I wanted to check something out on the pattern so went to reach for it and it was'nt there! We whipped a u-turn and went back to check all the garbage cans and baskets at Walmart. You know how they park all the baskets half in the store and half out, well my DH went thriugh all the baskets and the last one is where he found it. What a releif! He's a keeper!!!!!!

Oh, definately!

Mine too! LOL

I bought five tiny buttons to finish a wall hanging, and the store put them in a little white paper bag for me. When I got home I did the same thing, cleaned out the car, then that night when I went to sew my buttons on they were nowhere to be found. I was gutted, and while I was cursing and swearing and vowing there was no way I would go through the rubbish my darling partner went outside and went through all the rubbish till he found the tiny little white paper bag with my buttons in it.

Men can be sweet, can't they?

OR, did he know that you'd be upset about it for a LOOOONG time and decided it was worth the effort?

BlueChicken 01-27-2009 01:44 AM

It's quite possible digging through the rubbish was less painful that being inside the house with me sulking! LOL

I remember reading this thread back in August when it was posted and on another thread I see you now have a cow quilt. I'm glad you had a happy ending.

I'm new here, so I am glad you found this so I now know why that quilt has the strange name! I saw the cows, and I could'nt make the connection. Thank you for letting me know that my faculties are okay!
