In days of yore, when the crazy quilts were made, they were made as one big continuous fabric. None of these individual blocks that are made now, for our convenience!

Oh how I wish I had the ones that belonged to my husband's Grandmother now ... they became cow blankets first, then later the dog's bed! *gasp* <<shudder>>

They look like crazy quilt blocks to me, so what is the difference?

Is it that they are all one type of fabric and have no added embroidery/embellishments? Or ...?

Is the main difference that crazy quilt blocks are foundation pieced, while crumb quilt blocks are not?

Thanks,

I must say I really enjoyed looking at all the tuts and links to crumbs. Iam working on a crazy quilt right now which kinda resembles, and I am using re used dryer sheets as a foundation. I do wash out the remaining product, dry and press them before using. They work great and add stability without a lot of weight. All the fabrics I am using are silky, satiny and slippery so the foundation helps.:)

In researching crazy quilts before I began sewing mine, I did find some that were done in squares and even some with "cigar silks" and advertising included. Fascinating and a lot of them are in museums now. Sorry about the abuse use!:)

Thanks,

I think the main difference is that crazy quilts give quilters the opportunity to show off their beautiful stitching skills and add a lot of pretty embelleshments. They are awesome quilts. A crumb quilt can be foundation pieced, or not. It's personal preference or what you want for a particular quilt.

Thankyou, Izy. I think I must be a crumb/string & crazy quilter at heart. Love your quilt & yes: I DO have crumbs to play with.

I have been making these for several years--didn't realize they had a name. I called them "crazy quilt blocks" Where have I been--sleeping I guess.

I have sandwich baggies of strips and odd bits. Great tute, going to do this. From on, hopefully, every time I finish a project I'm making crumb squares. Very interesting quilts.

I loved all the great tutorials given and pictures shown! So creative!

The tutorial and pics are awesome, but now I'm confused. To me, these are crazy patches. I thought 'crumbs' were those oh, so much smaller pieces.

Good tute .... though in my way of thinking, those are a LOT bigger than what I call crumbs! :) JIMHO

Beautiful! :-D

Pretty cool idea to use the rick rack. I have some flowered bias tape from somewhere??? that might be an idea to use it up on a quilt like that but with not much color. Thanks for the idea. 4js

I make totes using the "crumb" method. I just didn't know that there was a name to it. I just use up my "available" scraps. The totes turn out to be "different" and folks like them.
