is there a right or wrong way of sewing crumbs??? I see one of sewing all on a strip. others sew how ever and then square them and put then all together with or without framing the squares.. hmmmmmmmmmmmm

litacats 08-04-2011 03:21 AM

there are no rules just go with the flow and see where it takes you

Glassquilt 08-04-2011 03:22 AM

Define crumb. I have seen a quilt made from the odd shapes leftover from appliques. All sewn together any which way to create fabric & then trimmed to squares. Most of the pieces finished were about the size of my thumbnail. I know I'd never have the patience to do that.

girliegirl 08-04-2011 04:39 AM

my crumb is going to be of all sizes that i receive... Crazy Crumb........ so there may be a 3 inch square or a 1 inch or even a strip........ received some pieces already and it is interesting to see what other people sew with.

I love, love, love crumb blocks and usually end up making the 3 1/2" size because of the size pieces I use. The tutorial posted on page 1 is the same way I make mine blocks, but it's really individual...whatever you enjoy and what looks pretty to you? Happy "crumbing"! :)

I think they are so liberating, no fretting whether your seams are 1/4" or if two fabrics clash and so quick to make!

Scraphappy: I haven't taken any yet of the mini pinks, but will do later on

I am loving seeing everyone's crumb quilts..great work everyone!! :D :D :D

I have quite a few pink / white strings/strips put a side for this too, think I will be using the crumb blocks as centres for possibly a log cabin effect...but who the heck knows, just have to see what happens when I get down to it, cheers! I hope I am inspiring others to get cracking on those crumbs!!!

:D   :D

I've done a few crumbs inspired by threads like these. Most of my crumbs truly are crumbs ... teeny tiny itsy bitsy pieces put together.

Wouldn't it be wise to add some sort of straight-grain strip (like a sashing) around the crumb block once it's cut down? I would think they would stretch too much otherwise.

Just asking because I'm about ready to lighten my crumbs pile.

Jennifer22206 08-05-2011 04:16 AM

your quilt, your rules. :) I don't think there's any wrong or right way!

I’ve seen them done both ways and both are beautiful. The reason I will add sashing to mine is because they will be a QAYG. Another option is to sew them to a foundation if you are more comfortable this way.

countryone77 08-05-2011 04:44 AM

I'm a little confused as to exactly what is a crumb quilt block.

They look like crazy quilt blocks to me, so what is the difference?

Is it that they are all one type of fabric and have no added embroidery/embellishments? Or ...?

Crumb is just another fashionable word for crazy, not much difference, but you are right about no embellishments usually, but no rules to it, just do what you want to use up all those awkward bits left over :-D

4js 08-05-2011 05:12 AM

I love the "tut" because I have been playing with my scraps. Would some of you gals please post what you have made with you squares or whatever you do with all of your scraps. I am looking for ideas. Would love to see some of your quilts!!! Thanks , 4js

Wouldn't take much of one of those to make a dolly quilt for a DD or DGD...and be adorable!! :)
