I second that. I am also sitting in my recliner with half a dozen sewing books to re-review and my puppy asleep on my lap. She understands. May even join her in a short nap.

Janet Espeleta 05-08-2011 05:24 AM

I find if I just take a break from quilting and read a good book it revs up my creativity again. Whenever I try to force myself to continue sewing I end up having to just rip it out later. I find this slump happens the most often when I have locked myself in to too many deadlines so I'm trying not to do that.

kheliwud 05-08-2011 05:27 AM

I straighten my stash. "Fondling" my fabric always inspires me!

robinsonkh 05-08-2011 05:32 AM

I step away and do something else for a while until the mood strikes again and it always does.

quiltaroni 05-08-2011 05:46 AM

Went to a quilt show yesterday and now have a list a mile long!

Sheree from Chicago 05-08-2011 05:51 AM

I find inspirtion from all the amazing talent here and friends on Facebook.
My time right now is watching my new grandson for 11 hours a day while my kids are at work. For me, it's a matter of not having the time (or energy).
Another thing that inspires me is to pull out all my fabrics and ponder the possibilities! Hugs

patchsamkim 05-08-2011 05:52 AM

When I feel like this I usually will get out some of my squares I have cut and start making 4 patches or 9 patches, or just sew strips together...some wonderful quilts have come out of these "humble beginnings."

deema 05-08-2011 05:52 AM

I do something really quick! An e-reader case, mug rugs, coffee cozies, just little things that I can do in one sitting and get a quick (and cute!) finished product! Something about the instant gratification gives me to kick to start a bigger project.

Para722 05-08-2011 05:53 AM

I go through my stash and find a fabric that I just have to sew with. It always works for me.

Me too.

As for getting inspiration, I do a lot of web searching. Everyone hits a low time though, so don't fret.

Melinda, I love the little cow!

Gabrielle's Mimi 05-08-2011 06:20 AM

Go to Barnes and Noble, get a latte or some other drink that is a treat, and pick up a few quilting magazines to browse through. That always gets me excited to start a new project.

mucky 05-08-2011 06:31 AM

All I have to do is read one day of the quilting board and I have so many ideas that I can't even begin to know where to start. Can't wait to do the jelly roll strip quilt today except I will use strips from my stash.

vasallese 05-08-2011 06:43 AM

All of the above! I usually have home-made kits sitting around, they are already cut and ready to for sewing. THat way I don't have to think, just sew. That helps me.

cindi 05-08-2011 06:45 AM

I like to look through my quilt books. Or I go blog-hopping to see if anything inspires me.

Michellesews 05-08-2011 06:47 AM

sometimes you just need to shut down and take time for other things. After 3 or 4 quilts, I usually find I take a month or so off. Just natures way of rejeuvenating our brains, I think. Go with the flow! magazines get me inspired...quilt shows...etc.

Is the "blahs" contagious? I am having them also. At the present I am piecing a "Missouri Daisy" for my youngest daughter, and just don't seem to be having any fun doing it. The Blahs got to me.

Jo Mama 05-08-2011 07:01 AM

Read this board - it always makes me want to go sew!

Gwyn 05-08-2011 07:20 AM

Go fabric shopping. That always gets the juices flowing. No car? Use your computer.

Gwyn 05-08-2011 07:22 AM

Flylady has a trick. Set your baking timer for say 30 minutes. If you honestly work on it for 30 minutes and you aren't getting into it and having fun, stop. Or...just ignore the timer and keep sewing.

I can do anything for 30 minutes. However, if it is cleaning, all I can do is 15.

bakermom 05-08-2011 07:41 AM

I start sorting thru my scraps/remnants,matching up fabrics i think will go together. sooner or later somethng clicks and I have a new project in mind.

LadyCougar 05-08-2011 07:58 AM

Nice glass a wine, some deep breaths, and enjoy nature always revitalizes me.

GOD BLESS ,YOU :I WILL NOT COMPLAIN, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO A REST. I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS AND DON'T MISS A ONE OF THEM

gramalama9 05-08-2011 09:00 AM

Most of today's grandmas are very kewl .... ain't no flies on us!!!!!
No offense taken or given, I hope.

Tropical 05-08-2011 09:18 AM

I'm feeling that way right now about quilting/sewing and I feel sorta guilty because my DH worked hard to get my sewing and cutting tables just right for me. He says don't worry about it. Right now I just want to read so I'm going to wait out the blahs about sewing. I hope your's pass soon. :)

Sierra 05-08-2011 09:43 AM

I hit a blank wall several months ago. I'd cleaned up my quilt room, sorted my fabrics, made all the grandkids, and now all the kids and their spouses quilts..........

Ahh, when straitening my stash I remembered the fabrics I didn't really like and couldn't imagine using..... What if I used them to make cuddle quilts for my church to hand out. So, I started one (probably out of pure guilt for not doing charity quilts before) and the first one came out kind of cute. Then I began on bigger kid quilts. I used up fleece pieces to back the cotten squares. And used up "baby" prints I'd gotten when the grandkids were born, but never used. And all those sports prints for boy quilts and all my grandsons are busy with music and leggos and building odd structures in the backyard. Anyway, I was really into quilting again. And they were received with enthusiasm. So making "not so important quilts" or maybe making mug rugs that can't really count because they're not big :>) And yet you feel good.

AnnT 05-08-2011 09:43 AM

I browse the internet looking at quilts and patterns. Something usually strikes a chord in me.

CircleSquare 05-08-2011 09:48 AM

I get out my old quilting magazines and look through them. Or else I go through my notebooks full of quilt patterns I've collected all these many years! But sometimes, even then, I don't have the "oomph" to actually DO anything. Then I guess it's time to take a break for a week or two. It never lasts longer than that!

Marty K 05-08-2011 09:54 AM

what is a WIP?

dash2000lbs 05-08-2011 10:00 AM

Katts 14 05-08-2011 10:09 AM

I pick up a sm. project that is instant gratitude. I recently tackled the Folded Dahlias which really turned on my excitement.

Besides, who says we always need to be quilting? Some times we just need a break.

penski 05-08-2011 11:10 AM

4. sit and watch tv while I hand sew the binding

These quilts are 36"x45" or there a about
one piece of wildly printed or baby prints or sports print
on top. Machine quilted about every 4.5". I fold the top fabric in half length wize, then again and then again to give me a sewing line Machine quilt. Square up. Cut 4 strips of binding width of fabric, fold and apply, etc etc etc.
And I DO hand stitch the binding because it gives me something to do during the mindless commercials and also gives me satisfaction of using my hands. Yes, I could sew it totally by machine but.....gang....I don't want to.

I rip off 36" of fabric - so have 36"x width of fabric
Then rip about 38" of backing
Cut batting about 38"x45"
After quilting I trim to whatever size it ends up.

Garden tending and watering the lawns has eaten into my sewing time and I need to redo my schedule so quilting has more of my charity quilt time scheduled. I also feel like I was in a slump lately Mercury must be in retograde or something cosmic things...LOL

I go through all my quilting books and get inspired.

Jersey Gal 05-08-2011 04:13 PM

When I have "quilters burn out" I'll read a book or two until I see something that inspires me to start sewing again.

MerryQuilter 05-08-2011 04:14 PM
