Does anyone know how to do the curved piecing technique like what is shown on the Vicorian Table Runner Pattern on page 82 of the Clothilde cataloge? It is NOT curved piecing...somehow you use regular squares and you come out with a curve in your design.

sewjoyce 01-02-2009 06:08 PM

Can you show us pictures of what you mean?

sandpat 01-03-2009 05:20 AM

Here is a pic of it. I don't think these curves are sewn as curved pieces...but I may be wrong..I may just buy the pattern to find out.

*** i had to be a stick in the mud and delete the picture. it must be copyrighted. luckily, mary shared a pic with us of her finished quilt. just as good a reference. thanks, mary. :-) **

beachlady 01-03-2009 05:53 AM

Yes, buy it!!! That is very pretty!

sandpat 01-03-2009 05:59 AM

I'm gonna have to...and I just told myself that I need to not buy anything for a little while.

Yes, I agree buy it. That is gorgeous. The ones here that are good with curves will help you. That even make me want to try curves. Something I am very afraid of. Wish I had someplace to use a table runner.

Isn't that the way it always go. :? :D :D

MsSage 01-03-2009 06:05 AM

That is awesome. I would love to try that if its just peiceing. BUT i first have to get my sewing machine OFF my table :?
Keep us updated with pics :D

pocoellie 01-03-2009 06:13 AM

Absolutely gorgeous!!Please let us know if you get the pattern and how "easy" it is.

Moonpi 01-03-2009 06:13 AM

It sure is dramatic, but to me, it looks like curved piecing.

I have that pattern. It isn't curved piecing at all.

I made mine into a queensize quilt though.

Lynda in TN 01-03-2009 06:17 AM

MsSage: Perhaps we could help each other out a bit...I need to get MY sewing machine ON the table!

So what is the trick? Is it appliqued? It really looks curved. I'm curious now.

mary quite contrary 01-03-2009 06:27 AM

An extra piece is sewn into the seam then after it is sewn together it is folded back and the bias causes it to curve like that then I had to go back and stitch each little fold down. When I was doing the big quilt I had to stitch it down as I went along because it becomes quite big & bulky.

If you would like step by step pictures I can do that later.

sandpat 01-03-2009 06:34 AM

Yes please...it is beautiful as a big quilt! I love that idea~

mary quite contrary 01-03-2009 06:36 AM

We are on our way out the door now but I will do it later today.

I would be very interested in step by step pictures. :-) It looks hard; don't know if it is beyond me, but it is absolutely beautiful!

sewjoyce 01-03-2009 06:58 AM

Oh the quilt is just beautiful!!!!!

Karenmay 01-03-2009 07:02 AM

That is very beautiful Mary...I for one would love to see how it's done! Thankyou!

Very pretty, but I can't believe the pattern and the technique are not copyrighted! How about just sharing the designer's name so we can get our own patterns/instructions from the creator?

mary quite contrary 01-03-2009 09:53 AM

Yes Nor'easter you will need a pattern but I will be glad to help you with how to do it.

The pattern in called Victorian Table Runner and you can get it at your LQS probably or you can order it on line at several shops. Clotilde.com has it. Or there is another runner similar to this one called Tulip Bells Table Runner...I don't know who the designer is. I looked for it to buy at my LQS and she had run out of the pattern, so I'm ordering it. It is lovely, isn't it?

patricej 01-03-2009 10:17 AM

techniques can't be copyrighted. they must be patented. this technique would be difficult to patent because it's based on the one used to form the arches in cathedral windows quilts.

mary quite contrary 01-03-2009 10:20 AM

Thank you Patrice. I am not interested in breaking any laws here.

babeegirl 01-03-2009 11:28 AM

ahhh..ok, I see it. It's curved back like in a cathedral windows block.

Here are the pictures of making the pieces for this quilt. She has several patterns out. I got mine at the LQS.

The triangles are folded squares over a full square, so there is a lip you fold back and tack down like in Cathedral windows. I hope that makes some sense. It is a real slick trick and makes a great design. Looks lots harder than it is.

Shemjo 01-03-2009 05:49 PM

The pictures came up before I got my reply typed! Great job of showing the technique.

SulaBug 01-03-2009 06:01 PM

I love that quilt!! :D Also thank you for showing us the pictures on how it is done. It looks like it would be a fun one to make.

Tiffany 01-03-2009 06:41 PM

<drool> What a gorgeous quilt! Okay, who do I send the stink eye too? I have a ton of projects and yet now I feel compelled to go out and find this pattern. What a beauty! Thanks for sharing.
Piece ~ Tiffany

i know that feeling. please let me know when you identify the stink-eye target.

Janstar 01-03-2009 08:22 PM

That is a beauty and the way you show how to do it is very helpful Mary. Thank you!

Jim's Gem 01-03-2009 08:37 PM

That is a beautiful quilt! I may have to try that one. My friend had made one similar in a Cathedral Windows pattern. She said it was pretty easy to do.

grma33 01-04-2009 03:50 AM

When someone figures out the designer, would you please post the name.
THANKS Gale

sandpat 01-04-2009 05:09 AM

Mary, thanks for posting those pics. It does look easy! I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at it!

Here is the designer's website. She has some beautiful pieces!

grma33 01-04-2009 05:38 AM

Thanks. But again pattern is way to expensive to ship to Canada.
I think I saw this in an old quilt mag I have.
Will look it up.
Gale

sandpat 01-04-2009 03:48 PM

OOOOHHHHH!! I'll be on my way there to get that one right away! Thanks Loretta!

sewbeeit42 01-04-2009 11:01 PM

Is the technique similar to what is done when making cathedral window blocks? There a square is made, folded and then the edges are folded back forming the curve.

kd124 01-05-2009 10:42 AM

That is a beautiful quilt.

Katiedid2 08-31-2014 08:16 PM

Beautiful! Got the pattern, looks hard! Please tell me it isn't. Lol!

Katiedid2 08-31-2014 08:18 PM

Thanks for sharing!

evelyn5269 08-31-2014 09:15 PM

Is there a website for the catalog? I used to get them and don't anymore. Really want to look at this and nothing comes up for me through Google. Any Help??
