I am working on a large block quilt, cutting out fabrics. This morning I cut 4 pieces of fabric 1 inch too short. One piece is black and one piece is gold. Do I sew the back together since the quilting will hide the stitches or go buy two more half yards and start over? At $10 a yard, It seems like a waste of money to start over, but I want it to look nice too. Ugg!

Holice 01-02-2011 09:56 AM

unless you have some use for more fabric I would piece it. On the other hand if the pieceing would bother you more than someone else, then buying the extra fabric would lessen your stress and frustration. It is possible, since you say the quilting will cover it, that no one but you would ever know.

Can you incorporate new/other material for the missing sections? Just add new color for the missing parts?

amma 01-02-2011 10:07 AM

If the quilting will hide it, piece it together :D:D:D

No, I cannot add new color for the missing parts. It is a turning twenty block.

Shelbie 01-02-2011 10:51 AM

If it's a Turning Twenty block, just piece it. No one but you will ever know. If your fabric is patterned you may not even notice the seam. As my daughter often reminds me when I stress about little quilting mistakes, "Mom no one will ever see it when they are sleeping under that quilt". Just piece it and move on.

franie 01-02-2011 10:55 AM

I have had to piece many times. It usually does not show.

ann clare 01-02-2011 10:56 AM

I would piece it.

sewTinker 01-02-2011 11:00 AM

I have done that a couple of times before and I've just pieced it back together and treated it just like whole cloth. It's never stood out in the end product to my eyes.

MadQuilter 01-02-2011 11:01 AM

Just piece it. I would probably press the seam open on those two pieces so there is no seam bulk in those blocks.

ditto

michelehuston 01-02-2011 11:53 AM

I would piece it and use it for your "humble block." As I continuously have to remind myself..only God is perfect. Just wish I could take that more to heart sometimes!

Mattee 01-02-2011 12:03 PM

piece it!

tyoung 01-02-2011 12:09 PM

Okay... That is what I am going to try. Turns out I made a secondary mistake on the first piece I cut. Not I am counting the inches prior to cutting to check myself. I'll let you know how it turns out. :-)

tyoung 01-02-2011 01:35 PM

I sewed it together and it turned out perfect. You can barely tell I resewed it together. One of the pieces was going to seam and seam so I trimmed on the other side. Now that I am all cut out and mistakes fixed, I am ready to sew, sew, sew!! :)

BellaBoo 01-02-2011 01:40 PM

I never empty my trash fabric bin until I'm through with the project I'm working on. I have pieced so many tiny pieces on to a miss cut to make it fit. No one can tell and only another quilter with their nose in my quilt would know.

tyoung 01-02-2011 01:47 PM

I asked my husband to take a look at it since he doesn't have that "quilting" eye. He said it looked fine, so I knew all was well. I am my worst critic.

hperttula123 01-02-2011 01:54 PM

glad it turned out ok!

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 01-02-2011 02:21 PM

I would definitely just piece it.....especially if the quilting will hide it anyway.

Dani 01-02-2011 04:38 PM

I had done needle turn applique on 12 12" blocks. The backgrounds were done in light beige scraps that I had on hand. When I was squaring them up to piece together, I accidentally cut one side too short!!!!!! Boo Hiss! I of course didn't want to redo the applique so I pieced the part I had cut off. I haven't finished the quilt, but I am sure it's not going to show after it's all done. If it does, that's okay too.

Just piece it and be happy!!!

That's the same thing my daughter tells me. My reply is they my not but I will and that bothers me.

Is turning twenty block a pattern? I'm new to quilting and this is the first I've heard of it. If it's an easy pattern, I would love to have it.

Alice Woodhull 01-03-2011 03:53 AM

ThaT's why I try to measure twice or thrice and cut once.

Jenniky 01-03-2011 04:05 AM

Good deal..glad it worked out for you :) Show pics of your finished quilt..can get enough of seeing what others are doing.. :) :)

quilt3311 01-03-2011 05:13 AM

I think I would just piece it if you have enough fabric to cut the inch (adding seam allowance) to the piece you need.

sumcoop 01-03-2011 05:37 AM

Our grandmothers used to piece pieces all the time or at least the ones I have of my grand mother in law on scrap quilts...other than applique.
Happy sewing.

jitkaau 01-03-2011 07:04 AM

I would either piece it or frame it and make an extra feature if I was able. That way, it would look intentional. Are you able to swap the colours of the extra bits you put in? that way, it would look very deliberate.

duckydo 01-03-2011 10:54 AM

I agree on a turning twenty it won't be that noticable. Quilting will cover it nicely

trolleystation 01-03-2011 11:36 AM

Piece it...we'll never tell.

Busy Bee 01-03-2011 11:46 AM

Piece it by all means. Have done it several times and you can not tell once the quilt is done.

amorerm 01-03-2011 12:47 PM

What pattern is the block your doing. Is it the border you cut too short. Is it in the block that short? I've become pretty good fixing and hiding mistakes or making it look it is part of the pattern. LOL

stitchofclass2 01-03-2011 01:10 PM

Isn't "piecing" what quilting is all about? Piece it and make it part of the design. JMTCW (just my two cents worth).

Tweety2911 01-03-2011 01:53 PM

Piece it, on the turning 20 it won't be noticed.

emsgranny 01-03-2011 02:03 PM

quilting will hide alot!! I am so glad this worked out for you!!! show us finished project - have fun!!! cheryl :D

Yay!!!! I've done it myself and lived through it. No one can see "stuff" that we worry about.

sewingsuz 01-03-2011 04:57 PM

I would piece it, no one will notice. The quilting will help also. One time I sniped a santin bluse I was making for me so I just added a small pocket. Don't worry.

That's my vote. If you are sure the quilting will hide it, then I wouldn't think twice about piecing it.

Farm Quilter 01-03-2011 05:24 PM

Been there, done that, pieced it back together, cut again and forgot about it!

BrendaK 01-03-2011 07:31 PM

:-D Quilter7x. Beautiful quilt. What is the pattern please. I agree with all of you. I have pieced so many times it's almost normal for me now. Happy New Year all.

TymeToShine 01-03-2011 07:47 PM

I just did the same thing and pieced it. Now that it is quilted I do not notice it unless I look for it.
