Just cut my finger accidently on the rotary cutter. Even though the cut was slight, I feel so dumb. Anyone else ever done that??

lfstamper 05-18-2011 02:11 PM

Did a month ago only it wasn't so slight. Still tender and sore. I got guards for my rulers now.

patricej 05-18-2011 02:11 PM

more times than i care to admit.

MellieKQuilter 05-18-2011 02:12 PM

At a class a woman shared she cut it so bad, she had to have lots and lots of stiches. She uses leather gloves now...

musicaljan 05-18-2011 02:20 PM

Yes, unfortunately I have to admit that I cut my left index finger pretty bad. A part of it had to be reattached. :O But that was a few years ago. It healed up okay. ;D

sorry bout your boo-boo...

Gennynut 05-18-2011 02:28 PM

Yep! I've cut my fingers a good number of times and once very deep still have the scar! I use a June Taylor shape cutter now . It cuts down on spilled blood.

Becka 05-18-2011 02:32 PM

I've nicked my finger, but more often I've cut part of my nail off. Try explaining "rotary cutter" to a non-english speaking manicurist... lol

Bought this the other day to help hold my ruler steady and hopefully prevent cutting accidents (had one small one). So far I like it but the jury is still out. At least I can use it near my bathtub to help me get in and out after my next knee replacement... Anyone else use these?

You are not the first and you will not be the last.

jrhboxers 05-18-2011 02:39 PM

Yes, and unfortunately more than once.

mltquilt 05-18-2011 02:52 PM

Cut my pointer finger on my left hand a few months ago at a retreat. Thank goodness did not have to have stitches due to the way the blade hit my finger, but still had to have a bandage for awhile until it healed. Bought a Klutz glove the next week.

CloverPatch 05-18-2011 03:09 PM

I have done the dumb dumb of leaving it open, then blindly grabbing for it. Ouch!! Painful reminder to close it when I put it down.

gunny148 05-18-2011 03:15 PM

Oh i have snipped the side of my fingers, cant count the times. Now i found a glove thay i use its called " fillet glove " i found it in a slvation army store works good.

luvstitches 05-18-2011 03:24 PM

Another accident to avoid is rotary cutting with bare feet.
I know a lady that had to have stitches on the top of her foot from the rotary cutter falling fast and hard on the top of her foot.

MZStitch 05-18-2011 03:25 PM

Yep, , just did this recently, fortunately my son was home to drive me to urgent care! They put some foam around my finger that would encourage skin to grow back. It's healing nicely, but won't be quite as evenly formed as it use to be, lol!

Painiacs 05-18-2011 03:27 PM

Ouch!! Be careful!!!

dakotamaid 05-18-2011 03:44 PM

Yup, did mine a few years ago, 7 stitches later I now use a guard on my strip rulers. I also keep me cutter sharp.

ontheriver 05-18-2011 04:35 PM

Ouch, been there done that so many times my sweetie bought a ruler guard and stuck it to my main cutting ruler. He says I'm such a klutz one day I'm going to lose part of my finger. Hope it feels better soon.

goosepoint 05-18-2011 04:40 PM

Just did that about 2 weeks ago. I bleed so fast I could not find a scrap fast enough. It happened because I was so tired and trying to finish quickly with a dull blade. So while I was 'sawing' on the strip I got my finger tip and the fake nail. I learned my lesson the hard way.

KarenR 05-18-2011 04:41 PM

Done that!

same thing happened to me, still have a scar. No more bare feet for me

DawnMarie 05-18-2011 05:04 PM

Not fun. My husband keeps saying that I need the Klutz Glove. I know I wouldn't wear it though.

amandasgramma 05-18-2011 05:20 PM

Um......only once, and really bad....never again!!! Sure made me start paying attention to what I was doing. Don't feel dumb, we've all done it -- sooner or later. Take care and hope you heal fast.

2000HD 05-18-2011 05:21 PM

Some time ago I didn't close mine and dropped it off the table onto the top of my bare foot. Yup what a mess.
Lesson learned!

ScrappyAZ 05-18-2011 05:45 PM

A friend cut her finger with a rotary cutter at my house. It was a bit scary to see all that blood and mess. It convinced me I needed to buy a Klutz glove and fast!

I hope your finger heals quickly.

eeewww! Never thought of that happening....
And yes, I have cut my left index finger pretty good before. It's pathetic to say, but all I could think is "I want my Mommy!" I was like 38....but it hurt!

ctub0126 05-18-2011 05:55 PM

Yep, then I learned to be VERY careful of where I put my thumb, thank goodness for nails. It didn't go very deep. I tried the holder, found I hated it, I tried the glove, refuse to wear it and my ruler slips out from under my hand when I used it. Mostly I just try to be careful now......... oh and I stopped using a rotary cutter when sitting in the front of an ambulance waiting for a call- also very important to remember.

vagabondmom 05-18-2011 05:55 PM

I did that last fall - required 7 stitches in the tip of my left index finger. Now I use the suction handle with my main ruler when cutting strips

Scissorman 05-18-2011 06:08 PM

The problem with most rotary cutter brands is that they're really aren't safe to use. The blade guards don't automatically activate when you relax pressure on the cutter or mat. I've been in the business for a number of years selling scissors and rotary cutters, and there's only one brand that I really consider safe to use because it does just that. The guard activates when the pressure on the cutter is reduced, and you can even set the depth of cutter blade. It has three settings - light fabrics, lock and heavy fabrics.

momcpo 05-18-2011 06:10 PM

Sorry about your "owie". Done it more than once myself, one time pretty bad.

patchsamkim 05-18-2011 06:20 PM

I have...more than once, but thankfully, nothing that required stitches. Usually happens when I am tired, and know I should quit for the night, and decide to cut for just a few more minutes. I haven't done it in a long time...finally know better than to cut when tired.

carolynbb 05-18-2011 06:20 PM

This is scareing me! I've never cut myself (should I say "yet"??). Probably only b/c I'm a newbie and still very careful. Plus I'm sure just due to the odds - the more one does something the higher the odds of getting hurt.

Karen's Kreations 05-18-2011 06:50 PM

Just did it on Sunday - not for the first time!

tsnana2000 05-18-2011 06:59 PM

I never really thought about using a rotary cutter while barefoot and you would think I would have since I have knocked scissors off the table and almost into my foot. So far I haven't cut myself with a rotary cutter but I have done it with some really sharp pointed scissors. Talk about feeling dumb.

scrappy happy 05-18-2011 07:36 PM

oh yes i cut my finger pretty bad cut the side right off, had to go to the doc, now i have a finger that has a slant on it lol

4EVERquilt 05-18-2011 07:50 PM

I took a class and the instructor had months before the class cut her through her thumb really bad, she had to have stitches. She had a real bad scar too. Be careful

I'm sorry to hear this about the instructor.

For all of those reading this posting....one of the biggest things to do to avoid scarring is to keep the wound constantly covered with ointment. The ointment , the triple antibiotic ointment, any brand such as Neosporin or generic will do. Also soak daily to keep clean followed with ointment. Continue to apply ointment throughout the day.

I had close to 100 stitches in a 1 inch area of two fingers. I was told to follow this instruction to avoid scarring and it worked for me, no scarring anywhere.

Gripper

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-123792-1.htm

Hi all,

There is a small gripper that also works great for small hands and small rulers. It is cheaper than the larger gripper.

A similar small gripper is available in a different color at HF, Harbor Freight that is even cheaper than the purple small gripper. You can get two (at the cheaper price) for almost the price of one (at the fabric store price) for those on limited budgets.

The grippers combined with the ruler guards, gloves and shoes are well worth the money spent to avoid injury. Another word of warning is to stop cutting when you get tired. It's better to wait until rested to continue.

I have done that a few times myself. :)
