I wasn't planning to share this until it was complete, but I'm so happy with it I want others to see it too!

This is the project on my wall (finally found an old plastic tablecloth and tacked it to the wall; dh wasn't happy. lol). I thought I was going to do a D9P which I expected to be pretty fast and easy to put together. I cut the fabric from fat quarters in 8 inch strips because I wanted to preserve an 8 inch run in a few of the fabrics (ended up being unnecessary and I have a lot of waste, but live and learn!). When I laid out the D9P, it was okay, but I wasn't wowed!

Soooooo, I sewed my D9P blocks rights sides together and cut point to point in both directions. Yippee! Now I love it, but no quilt police allowed. Everything doesn't line up perfectly, but it's busy enough to not be noticable.

Now for my dilemma: I expected to do a small lap quilt or throw. I have completed the block in the upper left corner of the photo and it's 14 1/2 inches square, so I have a 56 inch complete design area without borders. Now I'm thinking of adding borders and/or some sashing....or maybe turning these blocks on point and adding filler squares to make it bigger. Just curious what others think would be the best way to go.

Love your added step. The fabrics look so nice together. Be sure to post the finished top:)

amma 01-30-2011 06:10 AM

Ooo I really like your version of this pattern :D:D:D

GraceyFaas 01-30-2011 06:11 AM

It is soooo cute! I will have to remember this. I think a couple of strip borders added will make a nice spread. I don't think fillers are necessary.

thequiltmama 01-30-2011 06:12 AM

I like that alot. Best of luck :-)

NorBanaquilts 01-30-2011 06:13 AM

It looks great! Love how you sliced and diced!

deema 01-30-2011 06:18 AM

Ooooh, is that ever neat! I really like how its coming together! I would probably add a few borders, but that's because the triangles of putting it on point intimidate me...LOL I kind of like it this way, though (straight) because the two different squares that come through in the design *are* on point. If you put your blocks on point, they'll straighten out. Also, I wouldn't do sashing because it will break up part of the design, imo.

dkabasketlady 01-30-2011 06:19 AM

I LOVE your version of the pattern!! Gorgeous fabric and colors!!

dream56 01-30-2011 06:25 AM

Very nice - I love it

happymrs 01-30-2011 06:25 AM

I like how you did that additional cut, I will have to bookmark this page on here, so I can refer to it! If you have lots of fabric left, what you called waste, think about that in the borders somehow, just a thought. I have done that in a few borders, with another color, like creme, & it's made for an interesting, & different, not to mention, original border. Otherwise, some additional strip borders would be nice, & pick up some of the colors you used in the quilt. But I like it, great job, & don't worry if all the seams don't match up perfectly, I doubt they are suppose to at this point.

AnnieH 01-30-2011 06:26 AM

It looks really fab so far. Have fun putting it together.

happymrs 01-30-2011 06:27 AM

I see you said you sewed all the DP blocks together, then cut it again. I am thinking, cutting the DP blocks, once you have sewn them together individually. Great idea though, love it!

sandraa 01-30-2011 06:42 AM

Great idea. Much nicer this way

Raggiemom 01-30-2011 06:46 AM

I love the colors and the design!

Mariposa 01-30-2011 06:50 AM

Neat idea! Now if you just sew the blocks together, and add a border or two, you'll have a wonderful project! :)

daisyboo9 01-30-2011 06:51 AM

I really love this, would consider doing this myself. I think it doesn't need sashing at all, but I would add two outer boarders, maybe a 3 inch and then a 5 inch.

The fabric was cut; the original blocks were done. I knew I could put it together and I'd always be less than thrilled with it. I either had to be creative or I'd never want to use it. I folded the blocks back into a big triangle. Not bad. Folded again to a quarter triangle. Did 4 blocks that way and laid them out. Was happy with it so I took a chance. It's been a lot more work, but in the end, I know I'll be glad I did it.

carolaug 01-30-2011 07:03 AM

Very creative...love the look!

Lovely (although all that bias would make me crazy)!

I would suggest a border of the darkest green you have in your blocks. I think that is the the darkest color (at least according to the way I see the picture on my monitor). It looks like a solid batik.

The rest of the fabrics are relatively light, and having the dark around them would make the center pop out and "sparkle."

Any type of pieced border, I think, would be too busy, and would compete with the subtle pattern of the blocks. It's busy enough (in a good way), and a busy border would just take away from it.

mommamac 01-30-2011 07:04 AM

Sashing or filler blocks would give it a whole new look. I say keep it as is & add some borders & it'll be stunning.

Scrapquilt 01-30-2011 07:07 AM

Love the quilt....it was well worth the extra work.

kathdavis 01-30-2011 07:29 AM

Love your creation.

lisalovesquilting 01-30-2011 07:32 AM

I love what you did with it. Beautiful.

mrspete 01-30-2011 08:02 AM

Great work Nance-ell.

Rebecca VLQ 01-30-2011 08:02 AM

Iiiiiiii.....LOVE THAT! Seriously, great great GREAT job!!!

quiltsRfun 01-30-2011 08:19 AM

What a gorgeous quilt. That diagonal slice did the trick. I'll have to remember that one.

littlehud 01-30-2011 08:24 AM

That is so pretty. I love what your added step did for it. Great job and thanks for sharing.

mcdaniel023 01-30-2011 08:50 AM

Love it. Can't wait to try it.

Cherylsea 01-30-2011 08:55 AM

It was pretty as a D9P (beautiful fabrics) but now it is sensational!!!

Lindsey 01-30-2011 08:59 AM

I also love your added step. Its really nice. I would not have thought to do this. I might have to borrow your idea.TIA

Sapphire_Rae 01-30-2011 09:05 AM

Nice!!! Much better with your creative touch. I wouldn't put filler blocks in, just add a border or two.

craftyone27 01-30-2011 09:13 AM

I love your new twist on the D9P!! Your quilt will be great! I agree w/some others, be careful w/adding sashing as it may break-up the lines of your new design too much. If it were mine I would add some plain borders, maybe one in a light fabric from the quilt and one in a dark. Whatever you decide I'm sure the end result will be great!

Borrow away! There are a few drawbacks and if they wouldn't bother you, have fun! I've had to switch the direction of some of my seams in order to have proper matching and nesting.... but, some I could not switch because they were already sewn in one direction in the original 9 patch. It hasn't been a big problem, just be aware. Also, here and there are snips of fabric on the underside from the corners of pieces that were right on my diagonal cut line. I've been cutting some out... depending on how much bulk it's creating. All in all, it's been a fun project. I can't wait to finish it.

After starting to sew it together, I've decided against sashing. I like the way the triangles on the edges come together as a square. I don't want to lose that.

sunkistmi 01-30-2011 09:18 AM

This quilt is absolutely beautiful. Can someone tell me what a D9P stands for? I can see the difference after it has been "sliced & diced" but wonder how to do original pattern also. It looks interesting and pretty easy to do. Thanks

D9P stands for Disappearing 9 Patch

I started by making a 9 patch of 8" squares. Random fabric selection. Cut them in both directions down the center. If you rearrange them at this point, you have a D9P. Do a search on here and you'll find lots of beautiful examples. I just went another step to get the look I was wanting.

I did take some pics along the way if anyone wants to see the process.
