d9p ?

Would it look alright if I used just three colors (same fabrics) for a d9p and each block before cutting the same? Any pictures using just 3 fabrics would be appreciated?

gramarraine 04-20-2012 05:42 AM

I did one with just 3 colors and it looked alright but I like the look using more than 3 colors. I gave the quilt top to my DSL because I didn't like the colors I used. I probably would have liked it better using more than 3 colors.

Just completed a baby quilt with 3 colors!!!! It is adorable. Will be posting pics when I get betteries for my camera

Here's another. But if you go to the search window here on the board and type in disappearing nine patch or d9p, you'll see lots more. I like using 3 fabrics myself.

QuiltE 04-20-2012 06:05 AM

Mine was just 3 fabrics ...

Thank you! I wasn't really pleased with the contrasts and wanted something to brighten and lift it a bit. The quilt fits on my double bed, and the double set of stripes sit on the width of the bed. Makes it easy for making the bed and squaring up the quilt!! :)

Beautiful quilt.

Have you browsed thru the Gallery? Lots of inspiration in there!

I think using just 3 colors the block appears to float.

Jingle 04-20-2012 12:04 PM

Here is mine, Just three fabrics used.

irishrose 04-20-2012 12:28 PM

I like these with three colors. I have a special fabric that it might work with quite well. Thank you for asking the question.

scrappy2 04-20-2012 12:29 PM

I like the ones with 3 fabrics. I'm getting ready to make one with 5 fabric with pinwheels. Here is the website of the patteren in case anyone is interested.

Would like to see a picture when you get it done!

Do a search on here for -"black, white and turquoise" lovely D9P. My friend just started a D9P with one med size print and two small coordinating prints - looks really cute!

Some very pretty 3 color D9Ps have been shown here.

sash 04-20-2012 03:30 PM

also, another question. How much fabric do you think i need to buy for say about a full/queen size? Oh, and my colors are purple and tourqoise. i thought i would do a dark purple and lighter purple and touq. for the middle.

I like using just three fabrics for a D9P, though I tend to make my first border a different color. Here are three pictures. The first two are cat-sized for my mother's cat, but the last is a twin size. In each I used a focus fabric that was one directional, but once I figured out how to do that, the rest was pretty easy. Hope this helps....

beautiful quilts being shown using three colors

bobquilt3 04-22-2012 05:42 AM

Thanks for asking about 3 color D9P. I like the results much better than the multi-color ones. More pattern, less business.

Busy Quilter 04-22-2012 08:52 AM

Could I have the name for that pattern please. Love the soft look you gave it.

Doreen 04-22-2012 09:13 AM

I like using 3 fabrics. Sometims more fabrics make it too busy.

YukonViv 04-22-2012 09:23 AM

I've also done the D9P with 3 fabrics several times. I love it when I want to make some quick doll quilts.

I have photos on my flickr album here:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like the color combination, go for it.

I haven't done the d9p yet in thre colors yet maybe someday. I found the pattern great to get rid of stash. I did this one for a baby gift and used 9 fast quarters. 39x52 if you add a border it would bake a great lap quilt. I used 5" sq.

This is so funny! I just wrote to someone who sent a block like this in the Spring block swap, but she used 4 half square triangle blocks. She used two orange fabrics and a white on white and it's just lovely.

Here is my D9P that I did in VA Tech colors. It is 57 X 72 which is not as big as you want to make yours. But to give you an idea of amounts of fabric, I used a bit more than one yard of the orange, 1 2/3 yd. of maroon, and 1 1/4 of the white. I still need to cut my binding. I think I will go with the orange. The colors are not great in this picture. Not much sunlight today with the much needed rain that we're having.

I like this pattern. We made them for Soldier quilts before I knew about D9P. I made one all in brown for DH and everyone loves it. He curls up under it in his chair. I slept in the chair last evening and it felt pretty good. It is really cold her in TN.

jeanharville 04-22-2012 05:54 PM

Dina, although you have 3 fabric, you have lots of color and I really like that idea. I think I'm going to use your idea.

jeanharville 04-22-2012 05:59 PM

I've really enjoyed seeing the beautiful quilts all of you have shown using only three colors. Thanks for sharing.

LynnVT 04-23-2012 07:41 AM

Just realized I didn't give credit to tumrub who made that neat orange block I posted. I think the 1/2 square triangles make it even more interesting.

aborning 04-23-2012 05:44 PM

I have made a few d9patch in 3 colors. I really like this pattern used with only 3 colors. I am currently making one with 4 colors and it is turning out ok. too. Not real far on it yet so it is too early to tell the outcome but I think it will look great.
