Danger don't do what i did
Last night I was using my seam ripper to remove some stitches. I laid it down on my sewing table and knocked it off onto my lap. Natural response without thinking I put my knees together to catch it and it caught between my legs. I stabbed the inside of my leg badly. Managed to stop the bleeding finally with my husband's help. I was lucky I didn't get the main artery in my leg. Sure hurt. I won't do that again.

I did the same thing with an extremely sharp, pointed pair of scissors. Still find it hard to stop myself when something drops. Glad you're okay. It was really nauseating to do this......
O.M.G....that sounds almost and bad and when I was trying to seperate some frozen hamburger patties with my large chefs knife......yes it slipped and went right thru my hand with the tip coming out the other side.....I was lucky did not hit anything important and was working for a Doctor at the time.....never did that again.
Oh no - a friend of ours did that in his workshop, dropped something sharp and he caught it between his legs and he had to go to the hospital and have a surgeon to stitch him up.
thanks for the info i will be cautious from now on... hope you both are okay... you would never think of those things till it happens . so sorry. :(
Accidents happen so fast. Glad you are ok. My accident was with rotary but did I do a number on my pointer finger.
caustion beware of any sharp objects. you all be careful wow...
Thanks for this info, I never would have thought of that and I do this all the time. Glad you did not have to go to the hospital.
Keep an eye on the site...you may be overdue for a tetanus shot.
Sorry this happened to you! yucky!! Jan in VA |
i often catch myself thinking of putting something down quick [in the wrong place]. now i take extra time to put it [insert object here] in a safe place. in the long run, preventing accidents is a time saver :)
hope it heal nicely----its very hard to stop a reflex action
OUCH!!!! Now that really had to hurt. Hope your leg is better. I put a hand towel over my legs so I can catch all my threads and pins that I drop.
Yes, I tend to do the same thing. In the old days, the girls used to catch things by spreading their skirts and the boys used to clamp their legs. Goes to show how fashion dictates our methods. Hope the wound is healing well.
Just dropped my 3" sissors from the ironing board when cutting thread and strings from a quilt. Fell between my little toe and next one. Really hurt but sucked it up and went on. Felt moisture and yes it was red!! Happened about a week ago and it is still bruised and sore. No stitches, but it fell point down. We all need to be careful with our toys.
Well.... OUCH!
Hope it heals fast. |
Just as an aside to the seriousness of the cut, tetanus as a result is more serious. My doctor told me late last week that Medicare ( for we older citizens) doesn't pay for the whooping cough shot just on request, but will pay for the tetanus shot WHEN NEEDED FOR AN INJURY, and the pertussis is given along with the tetanus, PT.
Sorry for your injury, let's all be careful. |
Believe it or not but my dh did that with a steak knife. The nurses at the emergency room had a good laugh. lol
Just got my booster for tetanus and pertussis last month. Who knew quilting could be so hazardous? I hope your boo boo heals up quickly. Natural instincts are hard to resist. I sewed through the edge of my finger and my natural instinct was to yank my hand away from the pain. I would have only had a small puncture wound but instead I got a tear through to the edge of my finger. It took about a month before the finger was feeling somewhat better.
Me, too. Cutting on foil to supposedly sharpen the rotary blade and sliced right into my finger. Probably needed stitches but I closed it with butterfly strips. I did learn my lesson, though; I'm more careful now.
Now that I'm fast approaching 70, I've learned to just let things *drop* and move out of the way when possible. LOL Hope you heal quickly.

I'm such a klutz, I had to make myself a pair of reversible denim bracers to protect my wrists while I work.
These became a necessity after my husband only 1/2 jokingly warned me to be careful with the sharp implements or I would be banned from sewing...lol... I skewered my left wrist while ripping the inseam from a pair of jeans, and sliced my right wrist using my 1st ever, newly purchased, never before used rotary cutter... Complete with pocket for holding phone, mp3 player, or tools...such as an awl. Maybe I should make a set for the kitchen. I always manage to burn my wrists on the oven racks. |
I hope you heal quickly.

quiltermom, what a good idea and quite the fashion statment. Thanks for the tute.
Ouch! The OP and others' experiences made me hurt just reading about them. These accidents can so easily happen to any of us. |

This is true, I just had my tetanus shot when I went into the hospital last April.

I have gotten to where I just let things drop - less painful that way. I do remember the one and only time cutting myself with a rotary cutter. It was during a quilting class where the first thing discussed was safely cutting and the first time I use it my hand slipped and I got cut and bled quite a bit. They laughed and said I was a quilter since I was more worried about getting blood on the fabric than I was about the cut.
OUCH!! I wouldn't think a seam ripper could inflict that kind of damage. Goes to show how new I am to all this! One more thing I will keep in mind while working!
I hope you heal quickly and the pain goes away. I too back away if something is falling and let it go. I'm a wuss. Don't like to get hurt.
I have to share this story about rotary cutter safety. It probably helps that I have a great fear of being cut, because I never set my rotary cutter down without the blade guard. In my quilting class the teacher related a story of one of her students from two classes before. This lady did not show up for two classes in a row and everyone was wondering what happened. On the third class, she came in on crutches, accompanied by her husband, and with a big walking foot all bandaged up. What happened was she was working on the backing fabric of her quilt, which was a lot of fabric piled on the table. She set her rotary cutter down, was moving the fabric around and the cutter was knocked off the table and fell, blade down of course, on her toes. It cut her so bad, she had tendon damage and required surgery to repair. She was in the hospital for several days, and endured a lot of pain. Especially when she got the hospital bill. The teacher said those cutters never fall with the handle down and the blade is like a flying razor blade. That story got my attention. |
I have a rule in my sewing studio. "If it falls, let it go" Hands in the air, and let if fall. Quilting is supposed to be fun, and major injuries are not in that category.
Oh I know how you feel. I dropped a pair of sharp pointed scissors and they landed point first (of course) gaashing my foot. I grabbed at the only things in the room that I had to stop the bleeding while I drove to the ER for 18 deep to surface stitches. Everyone there got a big laugh! I had a maxi pad to absorb the blood held tightly in place by duct tape wrapped around my foot. The doc laughed, but gave me credit for creative use of both items. They took photos when they stopped laughing and sent them to the tape manufacturer. I ended up with a complimentary box of a dozen rolls of duct tape, and am remembered by everyone in the ER. You'll not make the same mistake again hopefully.

Well, now I'm afraid to go to my quilting room. I'm afraid I'll do something bad. Ha.
Men love women with scars, or is that the other way around!
Ouch... sorry you are hurt, I hope it gets better soon!
I did something similar when I was changing a rotary blade..... as I dropped it, I automatically put my hand down and caught it.... nearly cut the top of my thumb off!!!!!!! Won't do that again. Hugs Caroline |
I knocked on wood after reading the awful things some of you have experienced. Hopefully nothing will happen in my sewing room!
Mine has been a sharp pair of scissors. Are we in too much of a hurry?
I did the same thing but with a razor blade. I have a new scare noe. One on each leg.

I got my tetanus shot last week. Who knew. Healing fine but have a beaut of a bruise. Thank you for all your kind comments. I like the idea of a towel across my lap. Will use that one. Thanks. Hope all of you stay safe.
