Is Dawn detergent as good as synthrapol?
I just read, in a pin on Pinterest, that Dawn dishwashing detergent works almost as well as synthrapol in terms of not letting loose dye in the water re-settle on the fabrics during pre-washing. You use 2 tablespoons of Dawn (and nothing else) for a full load, and obviously less if your load is smaller. Has anyone else heard of this, or even better, tried it? The pin said it was great for pre-washing fabrics and also for washing a quilt for the first time. I'm wondering if it is enough to remove things like water soluble glue, or a soluble stabilizer. Anyway, I dying to know what the word is "out there" with everyone.

why not do a little experiment? On something like that, unless i was a chemically knowledgeable, i would try it for myself.
yeah, my grammar, spelling sucks ;) |
I don't think I'd want to use Dawn Dishwashing soap to wash my quilts.
I prefer to use Woolite which is a lot more gentle on fabrics. Also, if you have a front load machine like me you can only use HE detergents. |
I wouldn't risk it on my quilts. It is tough on greasy dishes and sea creatures; but I don't think it would pick up the dye from fabric.

I use a little bit of Dawn all of the time. I also wash my truck with it. Its great for anything.

I think it would be worth a test run! Dawn (without bleach) has been my go to stain remover for many many years. I think it works better than products manufactured solely for the purpose of stain removing (ie: Spray & Wash, Shout, etc). I have a bottle of it in my laundry room and I don't believe that it is any more harsh on fabrics than any laundry detergent.

I took a fabric dying class thru my guild and was told to use "Blue Dawn" to set the dyes. Only blue dawn not any other color. Why? It supposedly has something different in it. I never checked the labels. The hand dyed fabrics did not run when I used it but I don't know if it was better than Synthropol. Definitely cheaper.

toverly, one bottle of synthropol has lasted me 6 years. I've done quite a bit of dying in that time. I've bought a lot more of Dawn in the same amount of time just to do dishes ;-) Cost is subjective.

I would be worried about using Dawn in the washing machine so am curious to see how it would work. Love Dawn for lots of uses.

Not a big fan of Dawn. Have you ever washed then rinsed your hands with it? After rinsing, rub your hands together as if washing them. Takes a lot of rinsing to remove all the soap.
