Last night I had a wonderful time at a nearby quilt shop. I decided to join the Dear Jane Club. I went for 2 reasons one to see what it was all about and also to meet the author of the book Brenda Papadakis. She recently moved to my hometown of San Antonio and wanted to start a local club. She will be coming to the group often since it meets 3 times a month. Next year in the month of March she will do a workshop/ Retreat in New Braunfels , Texas. I am so excited because I will get to know her and join her personal club. I purchased her book and she personally autographed it for me. So I am off on a new adventure!!!

Anyone working on this particular quilt? If you are let me know so we can chat about it!!!!

If you have never heard about this quilt look under the Dear Jane website. This quilt is challenging because it is done with 4 1/2 inch blocks to total over 150 blocks.

cottagelover 04-25-2008 03:54 AM

I have looked in a few places, but can you tell me what a "Dear Jane" club is?

tlrnhi 04-25-2008 03:55 AM

I've seen some of the quilts. They are pretty.
I so cannot wait to get back to the states!!!

quiltwoman 04-25-2008 05:42 AM

I have most of the blocks done. I don't work on it too often but I try to pull out the cart at least once a year. LOL.

I love the quilt. I did not know the author had moved--she used to live in my hometown, Indianapolis.

Once you start the quilt, there used to be a group w/ on-line advice about how to tackle some of the blocks. Trust me, there is one that is a small star in the center that is easier to fold than to sew. I think the group is still around. Try googling dear jane.

After you complete the Dear Jane, you can move on to the Dear Hannah quilt. Can't wait to see your pictures.

I've seen examples of the Dear Jane quilt. They're beautiful. This is not a quilt for the faint at heart--we're talking major time commitment here! Good luck with yours--please post photos of your blocks as you complete them!

bebe 04-25-2008 06:10 AM

Loretta and tlrhi , Brenda Papadakis is working on a line of fabric that is going to be similar or identical to the fabrics used in the quilt. Look for it coming soon to local quilt stores. They are reproductions by Windham.

Yes I am going to use cival war, and her new line as well as other reproductions to make the quilt. I have a collection of such fabricts that has been waiting for such a project.

Quiltwoman I am glad to hear you are already working on them. How far along are you? Why don't you post some of your picks so I and others can see them?

HarmonyI will not be able to post unless I find someone who has a camera and knows how to do this. I am a computer dummy when it comes to this.

Cottagelover as to what is a club some local quilt shops and guilds have persons working on this. They get together to sew and talk about the quilt and their own progress. It is like a sewing bee but everyone works on the same project.

Here is the website for Dear Jane http//www.dearjane.com.

Bebe, sounds like you had a great time. Could you bring the book when we have lunch next week so I can see it? Haven't seen any of these yet.

Thanks.

bebe 04-25-2008 02:45 PM

Wow Ruth that sure is a pretty Jane quilt. Thanks for giving me the website to see it.

Skeat 04-27-2008 03:43 AM

bebe...that is the quilt I learned how to quilt on..no kidding! Don't tell a dumb-dumb they can't do anything...for I did do it:0)I never finished it..but, it is all planned out and ready to roll. I have about half done. I am presently working on the civil war diaries quilt and the love letters too...I try to do just 5blocks a month on each and usually run behind...when I get the two done... will then go back to my dear jane...there are many postings in cyberville to see all the different ones and their progress. You are a lucky girl to be in this group! Too bad she has been so slow on the punch w/the matching fabrics:))You will love this quilt!! I can just about name each block still:))Let's hope that leaves soon so I can have the head space for something else;))Skeat

tlrnhi 04-27-2008 03:52 AM

I'll keep an eye out for the fabric on line. Depending on how much I like it, I can have my daughter or a friend of mine get it for me.

bebe 04-27-2008 04:29 AM

Skeat,
Can you post some of your Dear Jane blocks so I can look at them.
Also let me take a look at your Cival War blocks. I am very much interested in such era !!

She had another fabric line earlier unsure of the name ( maybe Savannah) but within the reproduction/ cival war look. Look at the salvages some is still around her name is on it (Brenda Papadaskis).

Bebe- I wish our quilt shop had the Dear Jane Club. I've bought the book a few years ago but never did anything with it. Maybe I should just dig in and start.

Skeat 04-27-2008 07:28 AM

I'll post some this week...I'll only do a couple of rows...for I don't have them sewn together..they are seperate in a binder:))Skeat

I envy you having the Dear Jane author and teacher in your area! The size she drafted was too small for me, so I redrafted to 6" size and have used many of those "Dear Jane" blocks in several quilts, a wall hanging, table runners, etc. As much as I can, I acknowledge that the designs were drafted from Jane Sickle's quilt "made in wartime 1863" in Vermont and that my project is also "made in wartime 2008" in Colorado. Forum members made this suggestion for that label record we should all make.

Last Christmas I also enlarged many of the border designs, triangular with scallop edges, and interspersed these with pain color/small print insets, about 18" long, for nieces to use (rod pockets across the back of each "set") for mantel, curtain or doorway hanging. The back fabric was a harvest/leaf print. Try these for place mates, as this works very well.

I don;t have access to printing pictures, but most of you do, and I am leased to see the shared pictures and comments. Keep it up! Doris in Denver

Bebe, I would love to do a Dear Jane quilt, but none of the local quilt shops offer it. I've been looking online at some of the shops that offer Dear Jane block-of-the-month clubs. Has anyone done one of those?

quiltingchic 05-16-2008 01:30 PM

Bebe she also has a wonderful web site and i belong to a online dear jane club. I have the Dear Jane and Dear Hanna cd's they are great i can print the patterns right off the computer.
Bebe, have fun in you new group I am sure you will learn a ton lol

reneebobby 08-11-2008 03:03 AM

Okay so far all the Dear Jane blocks I've seen so far look GREAT. I just got my book and OH BOY I don't know about this it just might be a coffee table book. Well, not really I know I need to get the software (don't feel like drafting out the blocks) and get my backing I was think muslin but thinking of going with fabric instead (to lazy to wash) since I have a harder time with soft fabric.

bebe 08-11-2008 03:48 AM

Renee
Just start with the simple blocks like the 9 patch and so on even thought u do not have CD. Do some of the abpique blocks but rember to cut ur background piece al leat 5 1/2 inches to give yoiu room to work on and and possible rqaveling of fab. If u are going to use muslin I suggest you buy a yard of quality and purchase at a quilt shop. A yard will go a long while. I know that Dear jane is a year(s) adventure and sometimes muslin stains yellows and such. Just my suggestions. Come play with us and make ur Dear Jane with us. If u need help PM me and we can exchange information.

According to Brenda Papdakis she has a saying that goes like this "done is better than perfect".

Bevanger 08-11-2008 04:41 AM

I have made numerous blocks from the published patterns, but found that the size of 4-1/2 inches too tedious, so redrafted many of them to six and eight inches, Six inches and 8 inches are OK, but some of the designs are almost too primative for 12 inches. Blend these for table runners, bed runners, couch toppers, and in one quilt (for a western artist sister), I used these with my own "simple" and "classic" blocks including cattle brand appliques on "western" backgrounds--all worked perfectly. . On the "label" (Pima pen written) I acknowledged the sources, did not specifically identify which ones were from the Jane Quilt, and thanks to this forum's group suggestions, also indicated that Jane's were "made in wartime 1863" that mine was also "made in wartime, 2003" Everything is so old it is new again!! Enjoy this quilting journey.
