Deb Tucker's Rapid Fire Hunter Star

I went to the PA Mancuso Quilt show a quite awhile back. Deb Tucker was there, demonstrating her Rapid Fire Hunter's Star. It looked so easy, that I purchased it. As I usually do, I set it aside while I was working on other projects. When I finally got around to it, I looked at the ruler and my eyes rolled up in my head. What was I ever thinking, I forgot how to do the block, and the paper instructions, though very clear, were not making much sense to me at all . Came across Heirloom Creations short videos, and there was the Hunter's star - in 7 easy steps. I watched it, took the computer downstairs, and did the step by step. IT WAS AMAZINGLY SIMPLE. I made the 10 inch and the 7 inch.....stunning. Sorry, no pics and I am good with needle, thread and fabric, not so much with technology! I think this has become my new favorite block.

Glad you were able to figure it out! :)

luvstoquilt 02-07-2014 08:29 AM

That is on my list..thanks for the tip. I will definitely give that a look!

erstan947 02-07-2014 08:38 AM

Thanks for the push to check this pattern out:)

Susann 02-07-2014 08:46 AM

Thank you so much for the link! This is something I've been thinking about trying and am really glad Deb Tucker developed the ruler. For some reason I find this video easier to understand.

I think this is a link to it:

Just wondering if anyone has made a Hunter's Star this way and also with the Accuquilt cutter and can compare the two approaches.

charlottequilts 02-07-2014 10:09 AM

Thanks for posting this. I watched the rapid- fire video 3x and couldn't get it. The pattern has such great possibilities, too. I was thinking of paper-piecing it, although that might not be the best way.

Hugs,
Charlotte

That is really a good tutorial! Thanks for the link.

LivelyLady 02-07-2014 06:42 PM

I've made 2 baby quilts and a table topper with the rapid fire. I thought I'd never figure it out, but I followed the directions which came with it step by step and it is one of my favorite go to quilt patterns.

I've had the ruler for years and every time I look at it I wonder what I was thinking, lol. Thank you for sharing this information; I really appreciate it!

Did you watch Deb Tucker's video on youtube? It may even be on her Studio 180 website? I think her rulers are great.

Handcraftsbyjen 02-08-2014 10:42 AM

For future reference, Deb Tucker has many helpful things on her website. You can even see her demonstration boards (like she had at the show). I think she many even have videos online, but I'm not 100% sure about the videos. Her rulers are wonderful and she's a delight.

caspharm 02-08-2014 04:41 PM

Thanks for the link! I have always admired Hunter's Star quilts.

Silver Needle 02-08-2014 11:15 PM

I think Deb is also producing CD's you can purchase with instructions. I love her stuff. I buy something at every quilt show. Would love to teach but there just isn't time with the longarm quilting.

Ladibug 02-08-2014 11:26 PM

To me, Deb Tuckers are the easiest instructions to follow. I have seen the other one and it is how do I say, Deb Tuckers is the best for me. It doesn't mean that my way is better, it just means that their way is better for them.

Of course, with money in the PayPal account, I just had to have these rulers. It looks real simple. I just have a lot of trouble deciding which fabric to use...I waver back and forth. I bought both the large and the petite rulers and it was $54.00 with shipping.

About the accuquilt vs. the Deb Tucker rullers, I believe you could use both. Use the accuquilt to cut the strips, but the ruler angles are no where to be found on an accuquilt...I have one of those also.

My bucket list needs a bigger bucket.

Thanks for this link. I loved the blog post with 40 variations on layout of Hunter's Star...fun to see the options.

the LS is on my bucket list but like in the next century....glad to hear you got through it....but just wondering....is there someone who could get the pic done for you....you know here on QB we are 'pic-aholics'!!!!

I have the Accuquilt Go Hunter's Star die but haven't used it yet. I also have Debbie Maddy's Hunter's Star pattern made with all squares and hsts. I made a few blocks using her pattern. Very easy.

Yooper32 02-09-2014 06:46 AM

I have done it the PP method and to me, it seems a whole lot easier than this "not so rapid" method. I went to the web site and it looked mighty complicated to me.

BettyGee 02-09-2014 07:07 AM

I did the exact same thing at a quilt show a couple of years ago. It all looked so simple. I've read the booklet quite a few times and I still don't know what to do. Thank you for the confirmation that I'm not alone when it comes to buying things at quilt shows and then wondering why did I do that. One thing I did buy at a quilt show, and absolutely love, is the slide lock ruler. You put it down on your fabric, press down and it doesn't move so you can make accurate cuts. It was worth every penny.

GrandmaSewNSew 02-09-2014 07:44 AM

I used her Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Ruler and it was great! The results were much better than when I followed the instructions from the person teaching the Lemoyne Star! I'll have to check out the Hunter Star now.

meanmom 02-09-2014 08:10 AM

Thanks for the info. I have had the ruler for several years. Everytime I run across it I think I need to do this. But just never seem to do it. I need to finish this.

snipforfun 02-09-2014 08:58 AM

Fons and Porter has videos of this method under their TV shows. Then search for Hunters Star

She was at the AQS Show yesterday in Phoenix. I was tempted but didn't get it, now you are making me wish I had.

Thanks for sharing - I have the ruler too in a drawer. Perhaps I will be motivated to get one done. Glad you figured out technology...lol. Love your quilts.

I am sure that your local quilt shop either has it or could order it, or you could order it direct from Studio180 designs. My friend gagasmith was there at the Phoenix AQS show this past weekend.

I didn't figure it out....I just kept clicking and it just happened!

quiltmom04 02-09-2014 12:06 PM

If you like her hunters star rule! you'll like the Lemoyne Star ruler and block too!

newbee3 02-09-2014 12:43 PM

I am making the hunters star and I do not have the rapid fire ruler and I think I am doing okay

JanieH 02-09-2014 01:59 PM

Aren't videos wonderful! Thanks for sharing the information and Prism99 - thanks for the link!

teddy300 02-09-2014 02:17 PM

She also has videos on her website.

mjhaess 02-09-2014 05:04 PM

I need to check out that pattern....

Deb watkins 02-09-2014 05:47 PM

I also have the Tucker Trimmer, Flying Geese, and the V block. I suppose if I could handle Hunter's Star, I should give the Lemoyne a try!

Jannie 02-09-2014 07:14 PM

I saw Deb Tucker's UTube video and bought the Rapid Fire Hunter Star Ruler. I tried reading the instructions, but went back to the video. For every step, I reviewed the video and everything worked out great. Her video was a life saver for me.

bbeyes 02-11-2014 06:36 AM

Like you I set it aside but now I can't find my instructions and want to make it for graduation gift for my grandson

bbeyes 02-12-2014 02:17 PM

Thank you for the link to the video, I misplaced the pattern and wanted to make this quilt so bad and then you gave us the video. Really appreciate it. Wonderful group of people on this quiltboard.
