well you learn all kinds of things here! I do use bias cut binding, but never have done a 'straight' cut one before. I do use the backing of the quilt, and bring it forward, cut it to fit, and use it as a binding- it works great and looks great- only 1 stitiching seam in the front. I've seen really old quilts with this method, so I figure- if it worked back then, then it will do just fine now!
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

I wonder what the quilt has to endure? My lap quilt gets washed all the time and after about 19 years, the binding is starting to wear thin. I use the straight cuts because the rectangular shape of my quilts don't require bias binding and are eaier to maneuver (for me).

The only thing I have ever used is the continuous bias binding. You can make enough for a lg Qu.sz. quilt from less than a yd. of fabric. And it looks nice.

old quilts tend to have straight edge binding.
I buy ready made bias binding and if I have enuf in the right colour, I use it.
Otherwise I do straight binding, double fold.

I always use straight, just being lazy. Bias is more adaptable to the corners, waves, turn etc. To me they both last the same, especially if you double fold the fabric.

I just recently learned how to do continuous bias binding. I like making it because it looks neat and is fun to make.

I had a straight cut binding wear out on a well used quilt so wish I had applied a bias edge to that one. I now decide based on how much use the quilt will get. That's called too smart too late. Also, any quilt with a curved or hexagon type edge needs the bias cut binding in order to ease it on properly.

I use the straight binding. but I don't no what the difference is, except the bias is more stretchy. God bless. Penny
