I normally run my blades into the ground, and finally changed mine out after it was like running a butter knife over the fabric.
I have a FISKARS 60mm contour handle, that I've had for a few years. The replacement blade was "name brand" but I can't remember what it was. The packaging did not look tampered with or damaged in any way. Now, when I changed out blades it seems like the new blade has a wee smaller diameter. Where I used to be able to cut through several layers of fabric, now I can only do one. More than one (doubled over) piece of fabric, I need to press my thumb on the button to click out the blade to give it a little more OOMPH. Has this happened to anyone? Other than having a dull blade, it was working fine before the switch. And of course, I used the packaging to seal the old blade in and throw it away for safety, otherwise I'd have more info! |
sorry that this happened to you. i've never had it happen.
|
check to make sure you did not put 2 blades in that has happened to me
|
How old is you mat?

ETA: Are blades and cutters interchangeable? I have always purchased the blade made by my cutter and have never attempted to use another brand. |
I would think about getting the smaller cutter where you get the blades for 1.99.Connie in CO
|
Yes, I had it happen with a Fiskars blade from WalMart and mine was in a 45mm Fiskars cutter. Fiskars and Olfa are interchangeable. Fiskars blades from JoAnn's have been fine, just the WM one was dull.
|
I suspect someone switched blades at the store. I bought ink for my printer at Walmart one time. Got it home, opened it at the top and saw the cartridges didn't have plastic around them. I checked the box over and found someone had slit the bottom open, removed good ink, put in old cartridges and then glued it back shut!!!!!!! So now when I buy ink there, I open the package before I leave. Did I tell you about the opened Kotex box??????????? Yip, someone was desperate!!!! SOOOO -- it sounds like you got some bad blades.......take them back if you still have the package and get some new ones.
|
I am sad that this has happened to you but I am
glad too. You see, I was complaining to my husband the very same thing!!! The exact thing happened to me too!!!! My Fiskar 60mm cutter they don't make any more but the blades they still make. So, I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and pay a little more for a 60mm at Jo-Ann's to see if it fits the same way in my Fiskar as the one I got at Wal-Mart. I thought I had somehow tore up my Fiskar. Now I know I didn't and it is the blade that is bad. |
My rotary cutter is one of my most important quilting tools I never compromise on blades - intact I need to change my blade today it was not cutting as well the other day ready for a new blade - I dispose of old blades in a huge prescription bottle to protect myself and the trash people... or just inside something sealed my problem is I haven't been able to find the 5 packs anywhere lately and I love buying them that way - so I always have a sharp blade...

I recieved mine the other day- 2 brand new packages of 5 Olfa blades. Even with shipping it was still cheaper than buying them around here, even when they are 50% off. |
I have the same cutter as you and I always have the blade out button clicked to use it. I found the 45mm is much easier to use then the 60mm. I stocked up on Fiskar blades years ago whenever Hancocks had 50% off all notions sales. Back then I could get 5 blades for $5.50 at the sales. I haven't bought blades for Fiskar cutters in years. I use them in my Olfa cutters too. I bought the Gingher coated blades on sale and they are fantastic!
|
I did that once , too. I couldn't cut a thing. took the blade out to try another and discovered I had put 2 in at the same time. Duh!
|
if the blade was defective, then it isn't fair to "blame" the store. they don't get them for free, either.
if the blade was switched by a "customer", that is also not the store's fault. thieves are everywhere - including Rodeo Drive. if you've checked every other possibility and the blade still doesn't perform to your needs or expectations, they will take it back. they will either give you a refund or an exchange. |

"ALL" good suggestions :) |
The same thing seemed to happen to me too. I had to change a brand new blade **grrrr**. I think it was defective, but couldn't see anything wrong with it.
|
I had to return the rotary cutter as the pin keept popping and i got a brand new one from the co.
|
Anything that's mass produced can have a defective batch. I'm big on consumer rights and if that's the case take it back to where you bought it. They should exchange it.
You think a defective rotary blade is bad? I was a Phlebotomist for years and on rare occasion our HUMAN needles had a flaw of a miniscule "barb" of left over metal on the tip. You KNEW IT when your patient almost keeled over when you retracted your needle. You almost needed a magnifying glass to see it...but..it WAS there. Anything that's made by a machine can have imperfections. Especially mass produced things. |
I had a similar experience last week with my 45 mm Olfa. Used the third blade from a relatively new 5 pack. Wouldn't cut. Took it apart, checked to make sure there was only one blade, put it back together, and it STILL wouldn't cut. After several more frustrating minutes I took the next new blade from the pack, put it in and it cut like a dream! Then, carefully, I felt the edge of the other blade. It was not sharp AT ALL. As in defective. Only time I've had that happen, thank goodness.

I bought carpet blades at Harbor Freight the other day and was very disappointed. They would not cut worth a darn so I went back to my expensive blade and it worked just fine on cutting 4 layers. I guess you get what you pay for.

This happened to me --- was so mad at it, I threw the cutter out
|
Defective blades? I know many on this board rave about rotary carpet blades from Harbor Freight because of their great price, so I bought six packs (45mm) and split them with my sister. After using the first blade one time, I tossed it out because it cut worse than the blade I was replacing. Then I thought it was probably just one defective blade, so I tried another and it was just as lousy at cutting. Not buying blades from them again!
|
I had a similar problem with my blade and I contacted the company directly and they sent a replacement, no questions asked. You might want to try that .
Good Luck & Happy quilting |
I have noticed that even new name brand blades don't stay sharp as long as they used to.
|
I have a Olfa cutter and the blades got dull quite quickly. Well I should have purchased the Olfa matt too. I used an older cutting matt and it dulled the blades quite quickly and I can't afford the blades right now or a new cutting board. Lately I have been cutting my fabric with a Westcott sizzer and I found out that my cutting by hand my fabric blocks are more accurate.
|
I am not able to use some blades in my Friskar cutter. Can't remember maybe Olaf? It ruins the cutter by digging into the center spoke. Take it out and see if it is digging into the center plastic spoke.

I put my olfa cutter back together the wrong way, and had a terrible time cutting until I went to the store to read the back of the packaging. I only use the 45mm and buy most of my blades at harbor freight now. Occasionally I get one that doesn't cut and I just put in on the little sharpener I have till it does. I used to think the shrpener was no good until I finally read the directions.:)
|
Sometimes these things are defective. It has happened to me with needles. I change needles and it just doesn't sew right then I change another one and it works.

I have several diferent brands of cutters and have found that sometimes if you don't use the same brand blade as the cutter that they are just a little off.
|
My cutter is broken :((. The blade will not stay out so I can cut with it. The least amount of pressure I apply causes the blade to pop back up into the protective position.
I tried to hold the slide switch in place with my thumb while cutting but I just don't have enough strength in my hand/arm to do that. Guess it's a new cutter for me. |
Just a possible suggestion, is the blade put in backwards, sometimes that happens to me and i turn it aorund and it works. Another thought, could you have two blades in at one time. If you remember where you bought it, I'd take it back.
|
Maybe you got a 45 mm instead of a 60mm.
|
Other thing, one time mine was really dragging and giving me fits. I took it apart and lo and behold, I had two blades stuck together, removed one and reassembled and wala it worked!

Just a note: I too bought a large quantity of blades on ebay quite a few years ago. I have found that it's possible to put more blades in the containers then originally in there, so I took and moved all my new blades to one of the Olfa packages and marked with masking tape the empty one as used. That way I can still keep the older blades to use for cutting paper or junk stuff and have my new blades all in one place.
