you could purchase metal strips and magnets from container store. Hang the metal strips to the wall. Then a flannel backed tablecloth or anything that the quilt blocks will 'stick' to will work. YOu just use the magnets to hang it from on the metal strip and take it down when you don't need it!

I have a cardboard folding mat board covered with flannel as my wall. It's one of the Simplicity sewing pattern boards that only costs about $5.00. I don't have flat walls (was an attic with peaked ceiling) so this board folds up to store it. When I need it I can stand it on my other sewingmachine table so it's at the perfect height.

Take a large flannel back table cloth and make a sleeve on top. Make another sleeve on the bottom for a pool noodle on the bottom to both weigh it down and for rolling it up when you want it to be portable. Get a light weight (plastic or metal) sprinkler pipe the width you want and it becomes your rod for hanging the design wall on a plain wall. I sewed two table cloths together and have a huge wall! Love it and cheap! The whole thing cost me under $15 since the tablecloths were on clearance.
