hi!

i am going to make a storm at sea quilt for a dear friend.

what i want to do is make one of those magical quilts whose colour moves across the surface, gradually changing from the deepest blues to a wonderful sea green.

i would also really love to emphasize the optical illusion of curves by highlighting the ribbon that seems to run through some of these quilts. it's all about fabric selection...so do you just look and look and look and look some more?

i have no idea how one begins to do something like this. i found some storm at sea colouring pages, but any other recommendations would be so thankfully accepted.

The color page is where I would begin. Chose the colors you love, your blues and teals, and color in the first wave of color going across the quilt. Than I would go back and switch out those areas that you want to highlight second, the ribbon. This would take me awhile so if you have paintbox or EQ that might be faster. Good luck and don't forget to post the finished product. Others on here will have other ideas of how to do it. :)

Even though I have EQ7 and a good computer graphics app, I still like my colored pencils!
Go to this page, scroll down, and print off the SAS grid of your choice (They have both versions, the single & double sashed.) & get out your colored pencils!:

There is a Storm at Sea Pattern called Heat Wave. Although it is shown in a red color scheme, the layout might be helpful for color gradation.

I am attaching a storm at Sea Christmas quilt I made and love. It has the movement you are looking for. Why don't you check out the Gradation batiks from Sew Batik. Then I would consider using two colors (blue and green) plus white or off white and arranging with the two colors like I did mine but starting with the darker Gradation batiks at the bottom left and moving to the lighter parts of the Gradation batiks at the top right. There are a lot of ideas also if you google storm at sea. I must have seen well over 100 in a photo roll. It is a pretty quilt. Enjoy!

Check out Joen Wolfrom @ www.joenwolfrom.com I think she is the master of color. She probably has hints on her website and I was thinking that she added a Craftsy class. I have always wanted to take a class with her and thought I had seen one and then thought the time was now - except it got away from me. I will have to check that out.

I did a different version of Storm at Sea. Still need to get the border on this UFO !! Did it in turquoise and purples with a little bit of green.
