Greetings- My Mom made me a gorgeous quilt two years ago. My husband and I purchased a new mattress set today, and I just know that the quilt won't be wide enough. What can we do??? I appreciate any and all answers.
maybe ask mommy really really nice for a new one that will fit the bed? hehe. I would also just use the one that you have now. move from queen to king?
If the quilt is finished, I wouldn't alter it. Get two dust ruffles (there are some cute ones out there) that are the same. Put one between the mattress and the box spring and one on top of the bed and put the quilt on top. It will look like you meant it o look that way.
I wouldn't do anything to alter the quilt. Is that what you mean?? I would either fold and put it at the bottom of your bed or use it as a cover on the diagonal if you can. Or hang it on the wall.
Does any of this help?? |
nix on the new one, painted the room to go with the quilt and am in no mood to paint again.

I would use a solid colored spread on the bed, and use the quilt on top of that as a decorative accent. You could try putting it on your bed "on point" and see how that looks. Or you could fold it and keep it over the foot of the bed. With a plainer, solid spread or duvet, the quilt will still be your focal point.

oh, Maria, I like your idea of the dust ruffles. I was thinking along that line, but didn't think dust ruffles. Hope I can find something in dark brown. Thank you Thank you.
Would it be possible to use some fairly plain bedding on the new bed and display the quilt by hanging it behind the headboard? Love to see a picture of the quilt. Also really like Maride's idea!
Oh, your idea too, RST. Thank you!!!!
It would be cute laying across a bedroom rocker or a bedroom chair or folded on top of a cedar chest if you have one.
I made my DD a set ....of a quilt, shams & pillows, along with a framed block. They live in Fl, so during the hottest mos,she keeps the quilt folded across the bottom 1/3rd & props the pillows along the headboard. It's a guest room, but very easy to move the quilt off if the bed is needed.

I like RST's idea, also.
me too on RST's idea. Pick a solid color that goes with the quilt, or white.
I like the two dust ruffles idea!! Or you can switch off.
I wouldn't do anything to them. My mom made many quilts and ofcourse they are all to small for our beds these days . Just appreciate them for what they are and who made them.
Great ideas these talented folks come up with!!! Awesome...
Depending whether the quilt is directional or not, you could turn it sideways on the bed...no fuss, no muss, and no one would know the difference.
You could also purchase a dust ruffle - cut out the part that fits over the mattress and stitch the skirt directly under the quilt edge using SID next to the binding...even use a basting stitch if you think you'll need to take it off again.
I like the ideas of using the quilt as a "topper" - I'm guessing it is big enough to "sleep under" now?
My bed has two quilts showing....since like a lot of us, my Grandmother made twins and fulls and I have a king bed! Besides, the two of us like dramatically different levels of warmth to sleep....so my side has several quilts and hers has just one. They don't always match but the handmade aspect always ties them together and they look just fine. Besides, this way---I get to enjoy seeing two at a time instead of one!
Love the 2 dust ruffle idea - I'll have to try that since the one I made for my bed ended up being double size not queen
I doubt you should do anything to alter your Mom's quilt and all of the suggestions you have received so far are good ones.
Just in case you would like to know ... I have had to continually add borders to enlarge quilts and it has always worked fine. Usually someone will have a baby quilt that needs to be a toddler quilt that has to turn into a big quilt. Or they buy a quilt some place and then have a California King size bed, so I add to it. It works, but it is not easy ... Not sure how your Mom made your quilt and if it is hand-quilted or machine-quilted. I would not add to a hand-quilted quilt usually though. |
when my daughter need her quilt made bigger, I did use a dust ruffle, but sewed it to the underside of the quilt. Now it is more like a spread. Worked well.
After reading through the responses, I think placing it on point would be lovely. A real focal point for the whole room. At least give it a try and let us know how it worked out for you. This idea is new to me, and I love it! May try it myself, too.
This what I did and worked perfect. The two bed skirts sounds good too.
old quilts make wonderful conversation pieces, make wonderful decorations too.
We have the same problem, new mattress, now the quilt doesn't entirely cover it. Hubby loves the quilt anyway & says, don't worry about it, so I don't. But, future quilts for our bed will be bigger, lol....
I noticed your idea of finding a dark Brown. If you can't find what you are looking for, just tea-dye it. You can keep it in the tea for as long as you want, and get the shade you want. Also, coffee can be used alone or with tea to dye items.
It is also fun to do! Mariah |
I'd get a new something that went with the quilt, fold the quilt at the bottom of the bed and use it for when you take your naps.

use it to snuggle under on the couch or recliner.
I have the same problem, but I never thought of altering the quilt. first, I bought a beautiful dust ruffle, they took matching fabric from the quilt and added another layer to it - looks beautiful, then I bought a really nice blanket that would match, I put that on the bed first so it covers to the top of the dust ruffle, then my quilt on top, this comes to the bottom of my mattress. It looks very dressed up. I use this room for guests. Makes a nice impression.

I would place it diagonally on the bed. It looks great when you do that.

Turn it sideways on the bed.

From a design standpoint, the best way to keep the quilt as a focus in the room, (after all you did paint to go with it), I would find a solid spread in a co-ordinating fabric and use it under the quilt. Even if the quilt only covers the top its ok. Or you could sew up what we used to call a blanket cover.( Single layer of fabric with felled seams) the size of a spread to cover down to the top 3 inches of the box spring, and make a dust ruffle in the same or co-ordinating fabric, depending on how busy the quilt is and how comfortable you are with multiple fabrics/prints in a room. I used to get requests like this a lot from clients who wanted to retain a treasure in the bedroom. This takes it out of the realm of making do, or masking a problem and places it squarely into the I intended this as a design. :-D

Turn it the other way and make yourself some pillow shams. I did this with a full size that needed to go on a queen. Looks great. Jan
