My DH decided to take it upon himself and sharpen my scissors I use for everyday stuff. Well now I can't even cut water with them. I have tried everything, tin foil, sos pad, even made him take them back to the garage to do his thing with it. No results. I am at my wits end. Don't know what to do

oh no, that is not good, guess you need to lock up your scissors from hubby

I am sure he was trying to help you but .....

feline fanatic 06-27-2011 03:49 PM

Find someone who know how to sharpen scissors. Ask at your local barber shop or hair salon. They will probably know of someone. Or have DH buy you a new pair.

jayelee 06-27-2011 04:18 PM

Go to walmart or suuch and buy a new pair of cheap scissors to use for everyday stuff Throw away when dull and buy new

sewmanyideas 06-27-2011 04:19 PM

Some sew shops do it. What the heck did he use?

thepolyparrot 06-27-2011 04:23 PM

Does your closest Joann Fabrics (or other fabric store?) have a "scissor guy" who comes in periodically to sharpen good scissors?

And would you look at this - a Google ad for "Scissors Sharpened" just happened to appear above the reply box. :? "Hair styling scissors returned to factory new cutting condition."

The phrase "hair styling" is actually in the ad.

I hate tracking cookies. And google.

The owner of a quilt shop told me how she goes to a dollar store for scissors. They're sharp for awhile and then she can throw them away because they were so cheap.

TonnieLoree 06-27-2011 04:31 PM

My dad was a logger for many years. He was used to sharpening chain saw teeth. I reluctantly left my Ginghers with him, and when I got them back they were better than new. I turned around and gave him all of my kitchen knives, and OMG, what a difference! So, go find your self a logger. :-)  :-D

tellabella 06-27-2011 04:32 PM

I had my good Singer scissors sharpened at a sewing shop...and after that they were worse than before..took them back..they tried again...even worse...i think you have to know how to do it and this guy certainly didn't...I was told by the store that it was my scissors that were the problem??? they were good scissors..$40 over 35 years ago...i just let it go but I was really upset...it must not be that easy???

BellaBoo 06-27-2011 04:36 PM

Give him the scissors to keep practicing on and go buy another pair. There are some quality sharp scissors now that do not cost very much. The package of Fiskars sold at Sam's Club in the office section, cut as good as my Ginghers.

Thank him for trying and point him toward the store!

MawMaw B 06-27-2011 05:29 PM

We have scissor sharpeners at our local quilt shows. Maybe you can find one at a show near you. My husband knows to NEVER touch my sewing scissors.

LoriEl 06-27-2011 05:33 PM

Whatever you do-DON'T let him get a hold of your fabric scissors!

MadQuilter 06-27-2011 05:34 PM

Give him the ruined pair and buy a new Fiscars for the everyday use.

If it were my DH, he would also get the "IF you EVER lay your hand on my sewing scissors and ruin them, it will not matter, because they will be still be sharp enough for me to stab you." lol

jaciqltznok 06-27-2011 05:36 PM

hair scissors are NOT the same as regular scissors...you need to find a knife/scissor sharpener...

frugalfabrics 06-27-2011 05:47 PM

I bought a Fiskars scissor sharpener long time ago...it's a little gadget with a flint stone or something of that time inside it...I run my scissors thru it every month or so, and my scissors stay sharpened and working great. I've had the sharpener for at least 10 years...don't know if they still make them or not, but it was relatively cheap (less than $5) and has lasted a long time.

yes, they still make them.
i also have one that it shaped like a "cause ribbon"..i use for my garden tools.

a tavern/bar also has thier knives sharpened. we had a guy come pick ours up once a week. so they know someone that does them.

Maire 06-28-2011 05:30 AM

My DH did that many years ago, early in our marriage. He then bought me new scissors so I ended up with better scissors anyway. He never tried to sharpen them again-LOL.

NanaCsews2 06-28-2011 05:59 AM

I learned a very very long time ago when kids were in Jr High to label my scissors. Didn't matter where I would hide them, they seemed to find them for their school projects. I used a fat black perm. marker to write on the handles of those I could, and the blades on the others. Anything labeled 'paper' or 'kids' they could use. These were cheap scissors that I never used for fabric. Broke them of that habit, but I can still go into my 'older stashes' and find little corners or big chunks cut out of my fabric. Get upset at first, then I have to laugh! Some people's kids!

jitkaau 06-28-2011 06:06 AM

Sounds like a shopping trip is coming up.

This exact thing happened to me this weekend. Good thing it was just everyday scissors not good fabric ones.

jeanneb52 06-28-2011 06:39 AM

take him to the store to replace them.

verna2197 06-28-2011 06:41 AM

since I don't use them for my sewing that is okay, I just walked over to his desk, opened his drawer and stole his scissors. Told him until mine could at least cut 1 piece of paper his scissors were mine.

verna2197

Holice 06-28-2011 07:00 AM

i always send my Gingers back to the company for sharpening.

romanojg 06-28-2011 07:18 AM

when my scissors get dull I get out a piece of sandpaper and cut a few pieces; sharpens them right up. My knife sharpener also has a scissor sharpener on it. But don't you just "love" it when our loved ones want to "help" to make it "easier" on us. Gotta love thier hearts though

Rann 06-28-2011 07:58 AM

Hey, I chased my husband with a hammer and made a believer out of him when he would use my tools and I would never see them. The threat worked.

jpthequilter 06-28-2011 08:16 AM

Just leave those scissors out in plain sight, and hide the new ones in a box in the drawer..
If he tries to cut with the ones he sharpened, he will realize...

luvTooQuilt 06-28-2011 08:23 AM

Why get mad? This would be a perfect reason ( if you need one) to get a brand new pair.. sounds like a win win situation to me.. I lose mine all the time.. so I just go out and buy another one.. lose that one too and go out and buy another one.. Joannes is always having 50% sales.. One day Ill find them all.. maybe..

Just be thankful he didn't find them and they were just the everyday ones, which are easily replaced which is more than you can say for your favourite quilting scissors or DH, however maddening :-D

IBQUILTIN 06-28-2011 08:39 AM

Bless his heart for trying. It was a nice gesture. I'm sure he feels bad that he messed them up. Lay on the guilt trip and get some new ones

IBQUILTIN 06-28-2011 08:39 AM

oops double post

pontiac46750 06-28-2011 10:03 AM

Check with Joanne Fabrics if you have one near by. At times they have people that come in and sharpen scissors. Or at least I know the one here in Ft. Wayne, Indiana does. Also check and see if there is anyone in your area that sharpens knives or lawnmower blades. Some of them also sharpen scissors. Hope this helps.
Quilty Hugs,
Ann W. in Indiana

Pat, now that is funny. I have a pair of scissor I bought at the dollar store in 1985 and I still use them in my sewing room. I have made over 100 quilts. When I made 9 raggedy blue jean quilts I used those to snip them. Than my Dear Husband saw on TV where you should use the spring type to do it. LOL. So now I have those to use.

I'd only trust your dad !!!!! rofl Not all loggers may know the correct way! :)

BellaBoo 06-28-2011 11:30 AM

I you ever see a wood whittler beg him to sharpen you scissors or knives. I never see whittlers around anymore. I use to see them in town whittling away while passing time.

I would go to the dollar store to buy everyday scissors, and hide the fabric shears. Ask 'dear helpful hubby' to stick to sharpening knives. You have to know how to sharpen scissors. they are not knife blades. Silly DH, give him a hug for trying anyway.

krabadan 06-28-2011 11:38 AM

I've had that same experience. Joann's frequently has someone come in to sharpen scissors. They'll be able to fix them.

Learner747 06-28-2011 02:23 PM

When my Singer sheers became dull, I looked for someone to sharpen them. No luck. I was told the serrated blade required a special (costly) machine and because of the cost no one in a 100 mile radius has one. So I requested a new pair of Gingher sheers for Christmas and my children came through. I am still looking for a sharpener, though.

ube quilting 06-28-2011 02:34 PM

Please, people! Stop throwing things away. If they are a decent pair of Scissors get them sharpened!

I know we live in a disposable world but there is something about quilting and tossing out stuff that just doesn't jive. What is quilting history all about? Making do, saving, re-using. This could be a quilters creed. A good pair of scissors may cost a good penny in the begining but they will last a life time if treated well. Find a logger!
peace :D
