I grew up reading Dick and Jane and have been collecting Dick and Jane fabrics for the last few months. (Been buying them off ebay when it's a really good deal.)
Now I have FQs and 1/2 yard pieces and yard pieces. (I'm attaching a pic of what I have so far.) I'm thinking I could do a quilt, maybe a tote bag. Any suggestions of things you've seen with this fabric? Thanks for your input! |
I won't to do a baby book for my DGGD.
|
It's very cute fabric and I do remember reading those books over and over again because we didn't have access to all of the books our children and grandchildren have. The colors are great and it would make a very cute quilt.
|
I have this fabric too....will be watching for suggestions

Here's a link to a Bow Tucks Tote I made with Dick and Jane fabric. : )

Good old Dick and Jane! If I had it I'd make cushions for a kids' book nook.
|
Fussy cut the big designs and use them in an attic window?
|
I have two of the books but not any of the fabric yet! I should let my grandson read them he would have so much fun!!
|
I made my DGD a pillowcase with this fabric. (middle bottom row) She loves the pictures and the words.
|
I love Dick and Jane prints.
Where's the link for the Ebay seller, please..? At one time I used to collect Dick and Jane fabrics but used up all my stash. Hobby Lobby has it sometimes, but it's like a needle in a haystack and I'm sure Hancock of Paducahs may have some too, but not the older prints. Thanks! |
I made a D&J quilt for the gal that works for me when she had her first grandbaby. After all, every grandma needs a quilt at her house. I used the panel with the pic and used other fabrics and made like a row quilt with squares, pinwheels, etc. Don't have a pic but it turned out very cute.
|
Those are great...and those were the books I used in first grade...
|
I made one a couple of years ago, putting a panel in the center. I will post a picture of it tomorrow.

Dick & Jane fabrics are part of the American Jane line put out by Sandy Klop who lives fairly locally. If you Google her you will find more of her fabrics and patterns.
|
I love D&J fabrics, too. I learned to read, like so many others my age, from the books. Later, when my granddaughter was struggling to learn to read, I tutored her using a reprint of a D&J that I bought at school. She loves the fabric, too, and picked out some on our last trip to the LQS. I just smiled and tossed it in with the other stuff. She'll play with it one afternoon, no doubt, when she comes for a weekend. She's 12, so I'm thrilled with anything at my house that piques her interest. She practically lived here on weekends, now she comes only when there's nothing better going on. Typical pre-teen angst!

I made a precious tote bag for my Mom with these fabrics. It's hard to describe, but I did use the color blocks with words in them as the band around the top. Will try to get a pic. of the bag and post it.

I have been at her site, she has many great patterns, try going to american jane
|
I SO remember the Dick and Jane books...LOL. All about Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot :D

I like Charmy's quilt and I like the idea of the Attic Windows pattern for your cute fabric. The purse is great, too. Maybe you have enough fabric for all of the above???
|
Cute fabric. Maybe a disappearing nine patch?

The Michael Miller website used to have a bunch of free patterns for D&J fabric. If you go there and search by group (top of page) look under Dick and Jane and thre will be a rotating series of pictures of ideas. Don't know if all of those patterns are still available.

I borrowed a quote, or rather a near quote from the
See Dick series. I made my son a quilt. He enjoys playing cards, so this was a gambling quilt for his card room. His name is C. Frederic and here is the center of his quilt... mj |

I made a Turning Twenty out of my Dick and Jane fabrics several years ago. The larger pieces showed off the pretty prints of this fabric very well.

I am a product of Dick and Jane (my parents names), my mom grew up reading Dick and Jane, she taught us my brothers and sister to read using the Dick and Jane series. Here's what I did with panels my mom had gotten. The quilt is used as a seat cover in a Ford Model "A" Dick and Jane drive around.

I collected this fabric for quite some time and made my DGD a quilt for Christmas a year ago. She loved it! I think I've posted it before, but I'll put a couple of pic's on here.
It turned out I liked the back as much as the front. Front Back Closeup |

If you make a book, as suggested, write a simple sentence on the opposite page.
There is a reading method that is quite successful whereby an adult talks w/and asks the child about the picture. The child makes a sentence...short...and the adult write(prints/manuscript) it. I've worked with children with very large reading disabilities and this method got them started reading. If a child doesn't have a reading disability, even if they are very young. IF they seem interested...they will "read" the sentences. You are getting the idea that words on pages say "things" and they LOVE it! |
