Did it again!!!

Yesterday I was cutting out lots of strips and couldn't find my mesh glove any where. I had just totally cleaned my room and figured I had stuck it some place I would never find it again. Well, I accidentally put my rotary cutter ON the ruler and started to cut and it went directly to my thumb and cut it so deep. It took about 2 seconds and then started bleeding all over everthing. I ran to the bathroom and got a washrag and put pressure on it and found two big bandaids and using one hand, I was able to put the bandaids on my thumb. It was a very deep cut and I can't bend my thumb as the cut is right next to my knuckle. After all this, I went to the computer room and told my husband the story and he held up my mesh glove and said "is this what you were looking for?" I couldn't believe it! I don't remember taking it in there, but sometimes I go from my sewing room into my computer room and back again and I must have taken it off in there. Now I can't sew for a while. Those gloves are priceless!!!! {I should have gone to the ER and gotten stitches, but I know they numb your wound by putting shots directly into your cut, ughhh!!!}

Raggiemom 04-13-2012 08:46 AM

Ouch, I hope your thumb heals quickly!

Nanaquilts44 04-13-2012 09:04 AM

Oh I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope you have a speedy recovery without much pain.

BellaBoo 04-13-2012 09:24 AM

So sorry. I got cut once and once was enough to change my it won't happen to me mindset. My ER bill was 10x more then then any of the safety tools I could have bought, even with insurance. Please everyone do not use a rotary cutter without a safety guard or tool. There are many to choose from and you need more then one. A iron placed on the ruler will work fine if you don't have one of the safety tools. If you have to use a potholder to take a hot pan out of the oven then there is no excuse that you don't need safety tools when rotary cutting.

Writergrrl 04-13-2012 10:19 AM

Hope you feel better, Jeanne. This is a good reminder to the rest of us to be careful. Thanks for sharing.

Lori S 04-13-2012 10:28 AM

Oh My ... I have to ask have you ever thought about those machines that cut using a Dye cutter? In thins case you and the rotary cutter just don't seem to get along.
I do hope you heel fast . I think you need to consider a teather for your glove... just a joke.!

donnalynett 04-13-2012 10:55 AM

I looked for my quilting gloves all day last week........found them in the garbage can. Now why did I do that?

bearisgray 04-13-2012 11:41 AM

Ouch. Hope you heal quickly.

Tartan 04-13-2012 12:11 PM

Sorry you cut yourself, OUCH! Always get stitches when the cut is where you will bend or move the flesh. It takes a looooong time to heal otherwise.

susie-susie-susie 04-13-2012 02:57 PM

I agree with Tartan. You probably need to get stitches. Is your tetanus up to date? Don't be afraid, the shot only hurts for a second, then it's numb. Without stitches, it is going to take a long time to heal, and will hurt the whole time. I feel your pain, and hope your heal quickly.

Ouch. I agree....get stitches!! Great idea about the iron, Bellaboo. Never would have thought of that! I learn all kinds of stuff on this board. :)

momto5 04-13-2012 05:54 PM

Ouch, ouch, ouch!! I'm sorry that happened...my favorite trick is to sew through one of my fingers on the longarm ...I've been SO lucky with my rotary cutter so far...

fishhavengirl 04-13-2012 07:10 PM

I am so sorry that happened to you! Hope you heal quickly. ((((((hugs))))))

quilter68 04-14-2012 05:55 AM

Seven stiches to the inch for me and a tetnus shot. (left index finger at the nail)
I hope it doen't hurt too bad and Please check into the Tetnus shot. I am now good until 2020 as I think the shot lasts ten years.

Emma S 04-14-2012 06:15 AM

I cringe every time I read that another quilter has been wounded. Happened to me, even with stitches it took forever to heal. Mine was the same as yours Quilter68. The shot is more important than the stitches. Hope you can get back to sewing quickly.

ILoveToQuilt 04-14-2012 06:43 AM

Unfortunately, you may not be able to get stitches now as they usually like to stitch wounds within a few hours. You do need a tetanus shot (if you have not had one in 10 years). If it is still bleeding, you need to go to the doctor to have him/her look at it. With some wounds the docs will "super glue" them together, works better than stitches sometimes. (They are even using glue in surgery). The numbing shot does hurt, but it is over quickly and will help the cut "feel okay" for a few hours after the stitches. Please call your doctor on Monday if you have any concerns. Heal well and hope you get back to quilting! {{Hugs}} from a former EMT and fellow quilter!

gigi712 04-14-2012 06:51 AM

Awww, Jeanne, I'm so very sorry. I encourage you to see the dr on Monday and like the others have said, a shot is definitely needed. Hope you feel better soon and it doesn't give you too much grief.

Ouch, Ouch, Ouch Jeanne!!!!! After reading a thread about these injuries....I remembered that I had purchased (ashamed to admit some years ago) That Grip thing that looks like the bath tub suction bar....Well I opened it and added it to my long ruler! I'm in love!!!! So I bought the in-between size....now I'm really feeling the love....and the smallest is perfect for the multiple Twister patterns I'm so enjoying making.

I too have the glove from Fons and Porter but never took the time to 'find' it.

I have a healthy fear of the rotary cutter and I think that 'helps'....

Jeanne if you were the one that started the original thread a month or so ago a big THANK-YOU for such a valuable reminder that the rotary cutter is no respector of our fingers or heaven forbid ~ barefoot quilters!

Such wise, wise advice BellaBoo! Thank-you!

Take care. I agree with getting stitches and the tetanus shot. When I cut my thumb, I definitely needed stitches since it was such a deep cut and on the outside edge of my thumb.

I agree - but stitches usually have to go in within the first 24 hours.
Also, adults need an update on their Tetanus shots every 10 yrs.
Good luck - Judy

So sorry that happened to you. I wish you a speedy recovery.

jcrow 04-14-2012 12:24 PM

I never thought about a tetanus shot. I think I will go to the dr. next week and see if he can super glue it and get a tetanus shot at the same time. I haven't had a tetanus shot in over 30 years! And I do have more protection then the glove. I have the suction thingies (2 sizes) and a large plastic retangle with rubber balls on the bottom and a handle on the top. I totally forgot about those. Thanks for reminding me about using all the protection I can. You guys are wonderful and smart!

Jingle 04-14-2012 02:37 PM

I haven't heard of gloves to protect your hands. What are they made of?

CAS49OR 04-14-2012 03:50 PM

Ouch JC, I hope you heal fast!

NanaCsews2 04-14-2012 04:18 PM

Ow! Hope you are able to get back to cutting soon! And this is a good example why I always try to remember to put my rotary cutter in the glove before I start any cutting project so I have everything I need. I make it a habit to get all supplies together and lined up before I begin. A little anal that way. Heal soon!

nms 04-14-2012 04:49 PM

Just a reminder....are you updated on your tetanus immunization?

stitchquick 04-14-2012 05:51 PM

i use to have a prayer for quilter or sewer to move all unwant spirit away went i start sew dont know were it at now will run across it and post it , it must have worked, haven't need it in a waile

nstitches4u 04-14-2012 06:04 PM

Ouch! I hope your thumb heals quickly.

jeanharville 04-14-2012 07:12 PM

I don't have gloves, so I went to Fons and Porter and did a search for mesh gloves, kevlar, and quilting gloves. The only gloves that came up were the cotton quilting gloves. Do you know who might carry them. I check Clotilde and a glove search there didn't turn up anything.

barbgooch 04-14-2012 08:27 PM

I should have worn my cutting glove when I was cleaning out a can. I probably cut it in the same place you did - right on the knuckle. My husband told me to go to the ER. So after 2 1/2 hour wait, it took the doctor less than 5 minutes to put in 5 stitches. The shot is no more painful than slicing your thumb open!!!! I now tell everyone I have a "franken"thumb when I show them the stitches. Just make sure you take care of it, polysporin every day with new bandages. You should be able to start sewing again in a few days. Just keep your thumb covered! Hope you eal fast.

cathyvv 04-14-2012 08:28 PM

I would have screamed for my husband! He hates the sight of blood, but somehow overcomes that feeling in an emergency - at least long enough to get me to the DR...

Feel better, and when you're all healed, keep your "armor" close at hand! Or better yet, on your hand.

carla m 04-14-2012 08:32 PM

i have been reading all the horror stories and figure im on borrowed time with my cutter as ive only cut myself once and it was very minor in 8 years of quilting. where do you get one of these gloves ive typed in mesh glove looking for it but not found anything yet i think i should pick one up as i sure cant afford a trip to the emergency room.
thanks carla

paulettepoe 04-14-2012 08:36 PM

OWWEEEEE....thats has to hurt!!!! keep that up and our rotary cutters will be outlawed. and only outlaws will have rotary cutters!!

Dotha 04-14-2012 10:14 PM

Ouch, must be more careful.

Lavada 04-15-2012 04:20 AM

ouch ouch hope you heal soon and i have never heard of this glove either educate us please

qwltnfool 04-15-2012 06:08 AM

did it again!!

A trip to the doc might be good, especially if you think you need stitches. I cut mine, thankfully went to the doc and the tendon in my thumb had been cut. It was immobilized, therapy for 6 weeks following healing. The shot given is tempered by a topical and the needle is extremely small. The long lasting results are so much better if you get it checked! BTW, I hate hate hate going to the doc but on this topic, I'd go :)

I agree regarding getting stitches. The numbing medicine works quickly, so don't be afraid of it. You will heal much more quickly! Good luck!

luvstoquilt 04-15-2012 07:46 AM

They put the needle in the cut because the worst part of a shot (or what hurts the most) is breaking the skin!!
