I have used cotton thread and my dealer said just make sure I keep the bobbin area really clean - and haven't had a problem.

I have a Viking D1 and it sews with jean thread, cotton 30 wt for my piecing, to 40-50 wt. polyester for embroidery. I just make sure the needle is right. That is what has caused me the most problems in the past; wrong size or dull needle... the machine doesn't seem to mind. It's kinda like horseback riding: the horse will usually go Western or English because they all walk, trot, canter, gallop. The rider usually decides on the type saddle/bits they like and feel comfortable riding with... to me, that's how sewing is, each to his own likes and dislikes... unless you just get a funky machine and I have a couple of those! LOL

Thanks for the tip, I have always used what ever I have , and I to use the cheapest cone threads and have never had any breaking are problems with my threads. So I go with the
ideal [ why waste money on all cotton ], when poly cotton are any blends works just fine. :-D

I have experienced poly thread cutting thru cheaper cotton fabric over time. A couple of blocks that I received from swaps have deteriorated right along the seam lines. They might have ripped with cotton thread, too, though.

I use pretty much whatever I have on hand but I generally like cotton better. I guess I've just gotten into the habit of cleaning around my bobbin area and under the plate on a regular basis. With the machines I grew up with, it was necessary to oil the bobbin race every so often so I would just give the rest of the area a good cleaning while I was at it. I've gone almost completely over to Aurifil gray for piecing. It blends into every color. I do have a couple of scrap projects that I'm using up all my leftover threads on though.
