Did you know that all the newer sewing machines are pre-set for Polyester thread? This is the tension on your machines, and that is an important thing.

I was told yesterday that it is okay to use Polyester thread for your quilts. If you use cotton thread it makes more lint in your sewing machine and you have to keep it clean around to bobbins area because of that. This info was given to me by a teacher that has been quilting for 37 years and I would said that she knows what she is talking about. She also works in a high end quilt shop, and goes to all of the Quilt shows and talks with the people who make the sewing machines.

The older machines that are not as fancy as the newer ones are not set the same. But one note I will say I notice how much lint builds up and I quick that happens.

If we don't tell each other no one knows. This is the greats place to find out things we need to know.

Thank you!!! This is what I have saying for the last 40 years about the thread.

been using poly threads for 40+ years...i've never had anything fall apart---
i've over the years just shook my head and walked away when i've heard from the *quilt police*
that you should never use anything except cotton thread...i personally hate using cotton threads- for me they are a huge waste of money because they break every couple inches- i do use them up hand basting- but what a waste of $$=
although i do know some of (those who would never use anything but cotton) who use it successfully- just not me--
now days i use lots of different threads, poly, poly blends, silks, rayons, wools---pretty much anything except cotton- unless it's a blend.

It's one of the discussions that will probably never end ... everyone has their own thoughts and reasons as to which is right.

And I've come to believe ... they are all right!

For piecing I use cheap cones from Joann's in a neutral color. For quilting I use whatever I like the color of.

Thanks for sharing the tip. It makes sense because the newer fabrics were poly and the newer machines were designed to so the latest fabrics.

I use nothing but cotton and I don't seem to have amy problem. i would think cotton would go with cotton. i was told once that some polyesters can cut the fabric.
