Digital magazines or books
I am curious about digital quilt magazines and books. I use my Nexus for reading and love it. When I see magazines in a similar format I wonder if that would be a good idea. I have piles of quilt magazines which are taking up too much room. This would be a good solution, but I sure love spending an evening with a quilt magazine. Any thoughts?

I LOVE my digital versions of quilting magazines.
My FAVORITE magazine is Quilter's World for 2 main reasons. First because I get the digital version about 1-3 weeks before my print copy arrives. Second because with QW you can download and save to your computer ALL copies of the magazine including all the archive issues. So far of the 5-6 digital magazines I get QW is the only one that lets me just save to my computer without any other "viewing" program (McCalls Quilting isn't a friendly for downloading). |
I couldn't find the Quilting Quickly magazine at any store in town, so I had to download it. It is nice to be able to do that, but I like my paper copies best. I carry around a stack of them to look through all the time. It would be much easier to have them all organized on my IPad if I could just make myself do it.

I have some of both, I love my printed ones best. I hardly have time to go on the computer to read those but I always have some by my recliner to go through when I take a rest. I can always tare out and use the patterns without any fuss. I get a better picture of the quilts from the printed ones and it does not hurt my eyes as bad as trying to read off a computer screen.

I love my print issues also, it really helps to pass the time when you
have an appointment of waiting for something/someone. Until the day comes that I get an iPad or or something similar I plan to keep my favorite print issues. But I DO like the digital versions though. I tried to "steal" my husbands iPad, but he wasn't going for that so now he takes it to work with him. |

Well that is a "tricky" topic....
His dad gave him his old iPad1 when he got the iPad3. He did this because he and his wife are ALWAYS needing help with something or another on their iPads. Up until than my husband (who does NOT like Apple products) used the excuse to get out of giving tech help by saying he had no idea how they worked yada yada yada. Now that he has the iPad he doesn't have that excuse anymore. I told him that I would like to maybe get the Nexus7 or Nexus10. He just laughs at me.

I have 2 beading magazines on my kindle fire and I simply hate ir I dont feel I get a goodenough view I enlarge then you have that pesky continues scrolling but again I don't care for magazines on my computer for mag I prefer paper copy all other things i prefer my kindle Just my opinion

I subscribe to the electronic magazine version of both Quilter's World and F&P Love of Quilting. I don't get the hard copies anymore. I love it because I can just take my laptop into my quilt room, pull up the pattern I want and start quilting. (If for any reason I need a hard copy, I just print the pattern out, but that rarely is necessary.) As an added bonus, when you sign up for the e-version of Quilter's World, you also get two years of back issues for free! :)

I download quilting magazines to my IPad . Love it for I can take my magazines with me to Drs appointments and such. Plus I don't have storage issues with all the magazines.
I download books too. Less hassle. |
I have Quiltmaker as digital. It's not very user friendly. I won't get it again as digital. Fons and Porter is nice digital and has interactive content. These two digitals it's very hard to find the darn website that gives you the digital website. It's seems to be buried and takes me forever to remember where to look. Quilter's World is the best digital, easy to navigate and print out any pattern you want.

I don't download and read books as I ONLY listen to books in audio format
on my iPod (classic). But I love magazines in digital format. Although I getting HIGHLY upset with McCall's Quick Quilts digital. I purchased a subscription in Dec. and I still can not access it. I have sent 3 emails about this issue and have not received a response to any of them. Tomorrow I call and they WON'T like me after I get done. I am hoping the 2 NEW magazines that came out recently will become available in digital format. They are "Quilt-it...Today" and "Sew-it...Today" these magazines are ONLY $3.99 newsstand price each. MUCH cheaper than any of the other mags in print. But you can get a subscription for about $13.00 (give or take). It is chock full of good stuff also. |

So far I only have a nook that my youngest son bought for me used (it is one of the original ones) and is only black and white, so I have only downloaded books to it (mostly free ones). Most books I only read once, then pass them on, so I am ok with doing them digitally. Many times I like to go through my quilting magazines, and love to sit on the couch and browse through the pictures...I can't see doing that digitally...love the turning of the pages, going back to look through again to see my favorites, etc. Maybe if I had a different type of reader...but not in my budget at this time. I only get 1 magazine by subscription anyway.
|
I have 2 digital subscriptions and really like them. I read them on my laptop. Here, outside the US, it makes good sense to get the digital versions. If I buy a copy at my local magazine store, it costs the equivalent of a whole digital 1-year subscription...what with postage, import taxes, etc. An added plus is of course that they don't take up any space in my already very small house. If I want a paper copy of something, I just print it out.

Did you buy the Digial subscription thru the magazine directly or through Zinio?? I purchased a digital subscription from Country Living and it took e MONTHS of contacting them to find out why my magazines never came. They pointed the fingers at Zinoi but Zinio was never notified of the subscription.....Zinoi would send e the mag each month because I would send them n email...FINALLY. Country Living got their act together and confirmed my subscription....and added a free year to compensate e for my aggravation. Lesson learned...buy digital magazines thru Zinio directly. They are the ones who set up the digital delivery. Sandy |
Guess I'm from the "can't teach a old dog new tricks" school. Carrying around a little lighted square to read from really isn't my idea of reading. But for those that enjoy it, go for it:)

Quilty, If you are having trouble with the link for McCalls Quick quilts try this: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newtrack/qq_20130203/ you put in your user name and password to open the magazine. Seems the magazines all use the same nxtbook program.

The only thing I download to my Kindle is free books.
I still prefer paper books and mags that I can pass around and refer back to. I have a library of keeper books that I just cant get rid of. |
I like my laptop and the things I can do with it, but it can never replace the feel of a book in my hands, or the pleasure of touching the papaer. I'm one who will pass on the ebooks and magazines. Downside of being a hands on book lover is the amount of space my books etc take up, cant get around that one!

Bella - Thanks but it keeps giving me the message saying I do not
have a subscription when I paid for it on Dec 1 2012. I have sent 3 emails with no response period. So today I am calling them and going to force the "ugly" head of nasty attitude back into the box. We will see if that helps.

Sandy - I went directly to the McCalls website and purchased my subscription
I get the print issue just fine, for BOTH McCalls Quilting and Quick Quilts, and I get the digital issue of the MCQ just fine.

Thumbs up for Zinio. I've had good experiences with their customer service.

I like the print versions of the quilt magazines better and am on the fence about digital copies; some I like some I don't.
I have a space problem and will probably go digital but I don't think the software for the digital mags is very good. |
With e version can you delete what you don't want from it? At least I can cut out something I want then toss the rest w/hard copy or pass it on to someone else. Also, can you print out from comp. version

I subscribe to the digital version of QuiltMaker. I did this because I don't have room for the print versions. So far this works for me. I do make sure that I save each issue to my hard drive. I don't know that I will resubscribe, but that has more to do with all of the junk mail that comes along with it - email and paper. Plus I already have so many projects lined up I don't need any more ideas right now!

"My FAVORITE magazine is Quilter's World for 2 main reasons.

I subscribed to quilters world but it didn't give me the archived ones, is this because I'm in Canada I wonder.
|
I download mine as well and really love it especially when I'm traveling...I still like my hard copies though...I have an Ipad and have no problem reading them..
|
I like touching the pages of an actual quilting magazine...kinda like touching fabric. Love other things digital, tho.
|
i have a combination of e- and hard copy. i have a file associated with my e-mail and that's where i put my e-copies. i can draw up my e-mail and start reading the mag in seconds(?). i do have to upload (or is it download?) them to my i-pad and then they are portable. my 18 mon old dgd has my nook so she can watch elmo and sing songs when they are in the car, or even waiting in line. surprisingly, she not only knows how to find her videos, she is very careful with it. i'm waiting for them to get her a used one, but right now i'm giving them netflix, too.
i was a bookseller for many years and i love books, but physically i can't always read them. the ipad lets me get as close up as i want, and that is a real benefit. i've even used it to see other people's avatars when i can't figure them out (usually an animal) or if it's a quilt i get more detail. there is room in the world for both types of communication. i hope we will always have hard cover books:thumbup: and printed magazines. |
I love to browse through my electronic books on my iPad. In fact, I posted just moments ago about it on my blog. :)
|
I just purchased Quilters World for my I-Pad. When I opened it it looks the size of a cell phone screen and won't let me make it larger. Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how to enlarge? Is this the normal size?
|
I guess I'm still old school, I like the printed magazines. I like to put the mag with the project and know at a glance what I'm gathering the fabric for or have the mag on my cutting table. I even print the block instructions when I get a pattern off the Internet.
