Disappearing 9 patch
 

What is a disappearing 9 patch? I've done 9 patches before, but I don't understand what "disappearing" 9 patches look like or how to make them. Is it something new? :shock:

You make your 9 patch and then cut it down the middle and across the middle then turn the squares and put them back together. The do not look like a 9 patch any more. It is really neat to see it come together. If you search on disappearing 9 patch on the internet you will find several hits. Have fun.

Sew your choice of squares together. I used 5 with a strong color in the center one. Then cut like the tutorials say and sew them back together.

I put mine on point with sashing and added a center block because I ran out of charms. There is a thread of D9Ps in the picture gallery. They can be so different so it's worth a look.

Have you tried google? Here is a page full of pictures of D9Ps from google. You will probably find lots of tutorials there, also. (Or google "disappearing 9 patch tutorial.)

They're pretty easy to make.

okay because i'm a little dense. i have 9 fabrics that i would like to use. i am making each original square 5". how many squares of each fabric do i need.appreciate any help

Hi Jeanne, if you check out my blog which is listed with my signature, on the right side there is a column of quilts I've made and the 11th one down called Chaos in the chicken Coop is a disappearing 9-patch, a scrappy one!! We did a 9 patch exchange for many months in my guild, the rule was the outer corner squares and center square were dark and the four inner blocks were light.

Well, it's kinda funny, cause I just sat dow to the QB, after making a D9P baby quilt. I had intentions of doing a pinwheel and the a brainwave hit me at 7 o clock, started sewing charms together, and chopping apart. It was really fun and was done the top in about 2 hrs. Now if you knew me, I always pick the complicated patterns, and tend to get picky, but I was in a wierd mood and just started mindlessly quilting. I used a charm pack, plus about another 20 squares cut from stash. I put the larger prints in the corners so they would not be chopped up, and I put whites in the centers. I am still going to add a boarder. The missouri star tute is a really great one. I really loved making this one

I am so glad I saw this thread. It is a fabulous idea and one I have never heard of until now. When I took my first quilting class about 6 years ago, I over cut what I needed for my quilt. I have a bunch of 9 patches that I was not sure what I was going to use them for because I didn't want to do the same quilt I did the first time around. This solves that question I had in my mind......Thanks for bringing this into the forum!!!

Here is my D 9-P.

I made 2 separate 9-patch blocks

Blender #1: for block 1
Blender #2: for block 2
Blender (for the center of each of the 9-patch blocks): Cream or neutral tone on tone
Medium scale floral or print # 1 for block 1 (for the corner of the blocks)
Medium scale floral or print # 2 for block 2 (for the corners of the blocks)

After I cut the 9-P blocks...I used 2 pcs from each to make one block. Then assemble the quilt.

Large scale focus print (for the border fabric)

Google it! So much fun! I have made several now and they all look different depending on the fabric and the placement of the squares. Enjoy and it's NOT hard. I made one in an evening over the holidays for one of my daughters who recently moved away. Love from home! I hope you enjoy D9P as much as I have!

If you are referring to my quilt..they are not "set on point". I pointed 2 pcs of one block with the light square toward the center...and with 2 pcs from the second block, I pointed the light squares to the corner. You are correct tho...I never thought of this looking as if it was set on point! Thanks for "pointing" this out to me!

I made a D9P table runner for my mom. It was fun to move the blocks around to come up with a pattern.

If I may ask, what size were your beginning blocks and what width of sashing did you use? This is really beautiful.

My beginning squares were 5" from two charm packs, Moda Fandango, plus a few I had to cut. I imagine my strips were 2 1/2" wide. This was one of my first quilts and I really didn't know what I was doing. When I decided to set it on point, I didn't know it took more blocks so I quickly had to learn to make a Friendship Star because I only had one charm left, but had some coordinating blenders. Thank goodness for the internet and QB. I needed to search how big to do the setting triangles, too. Surprisingly, it all came together and my daughter loves it. It's a very large lap quilt.

Thank you all for showing me what a disappearing nine patch is. Now I understand it. You have made some very beautiful quilts. I think I am going to make one now. It's so much more interesting than the regular 9 patch. It looks like it will be fun putting it together. Thanks again, Jeanne

Fun to do.. just watch out for the rotation ! the main block fabric should not have a pattern that has a direction ... not easy to figure out the rotating of the blocks..is a bit akward.. but oh my ! The fun of this pattern ! Magic !

Do some trial blocks before you commit ... different placements of the materials can give so many different looks. Also, different block sizes, to help you determine what look you really want. Also, who says the 9P must be equal block sizes? You can change the shapes too, rectangles perhaps?

I did some experimental blocks, before I started mine and have some orphans that I'll use to make into tabletoppers or runners.

You will love doing one. and each one you do looks really different!!!! I do Eleanor Burns Tossed Nine Patch.

I had gone on the March shop Hop and I am waiting for Moda Bliss fabric precuts.... now I have to decide how to use both the 5 in and 10 in blocks of fabric...

I just finished a D9P baby quilt top today! It was super easy to make with precut 5" charm packs. Took probably 12 hours worth of work! I used 2 (42 piece) charm packs from the Moda Athill Range collection plus about 20 additional squares that I cut from another material I liked. It turned out so cute but I don't have a picture just yet. The finished size without a border was 38 1/2 x 52. This is my new favorite pattern for charm packs! :)

Interesting design! A good way to feature one special block without a bunch of difficult work.

If I understand you correctly you have 9 fabrics you want to use in your quilt?
Here's what I'd do. Pick out 4 of the biggest boldest prints (a, b, c, d) Then look thru the remaining 5 and find the ONE (i)that best matches the 4 bold prints. That is the one I'd use for the center of the 9 patch. Then I'd pair up the remaining 4 with the 4 bold prints.(e, f, g, h)

Now to set together. Take "a" and use a square of it for each corner square in the 9 patch. Take "i" for the middle center square of each 9 patch. Now take "e" and use a square of it for the outside middle piece.
Then a 9 patch of "b", "f" and "i"
then a 9 patch of "c", "g" and "i"
then a 9 patch of "d", "h" and "i"

After they are cut there are several ways to rearrange them
