All the quilts w 3 colors or 3 fabrics are beautiful. It is amazing how different they all look yet they are the same pattern

I just posted a picture and am going to see if I can do it in a Reply, as well as a Start new topic. Okay, I have to try two pictures, just to see if I can do that too.

I've made a D9P using only three fabrics. I don't think it's on the QB because it's been a long time. It really came out nice. I used a focus fabric (cardinals) in the four corners with a burgandy center block and four green leaf corners for the remaining four positions. All I did was flip flop two opposing corners giving the look of little burgandy butterflies spaced around. I'll check (when I learn) to see if my cardinal D9P is in the pictures section.

I like how this turned out. Now I am inspired to try it.

Yes, and the perfect place to make your pattern is at the Quilt Pattern Playground http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/cu...playground.php. You can alter the block and border measurements so that the finished size is equal the size of the batting, if that's an issue. Here's my latest, a wine country theme I made as a hostess gift for our dear friends who live on Costa del Sol in Spain. We visited them this past summer and I wanted to leave something special behind to thank them for their hospitality. It has only 3 fabrics and one block, repeated 9 times with a border. This was also my first attempt at free motion quilting. It was much more difficult to achieve the roundness of the "feathers" than I thought, but turned out so nice, I'm working on another for myself! BTW, they LOVED it!!

Your quilt is one of the best I have seen, including my own. The picture came out great. Like the hanging rod too.

Love your take on the disappearing 9 patch into stars.

Oh just love your kitty fabric. I wonder if I made one for my cat if he would leave me other quilts alone???? Fat chance, no matter what I am working on he is right on top of it! :D

maxnme01 11-05-2011 01:05 PM

WOW-would like more detail on how you did that. Have you tried the disappearing 4 patch? It's great in two colors.

Please post how you added those hst to get your quilt. It's stunning.

Thanks

Yes! This is what I have done! So cute!!

I posted a reply with a picture, don't know where it went. Still trying to learn this new system.
I made one using three colors: white, rose and dark rose... Turned out nicely.

Yes, I like to make my Disappearing 9 Patch Quilts with only 3 fabrics. I like quilts that aren't quite so "busy". Find two colors that you want to show the most, and use them for the main fabrics and then use the 3rd fabric for the middle pice on your 9 patch squares. Example: I made a quit with a black fabridce (with some white print on it) and a white fabric with quite a bit of black on it and then I use a red for the middle square on my 9 patch blocks I made. Then when I cut that 9 atch blck in half vertically and in half horizonatally, it made that red center block become only 1/4 of the original block size. So then when I turned the blocks and sewed them back together,my black fabric is now my big square pieces and the white blocks were cut in half so they are strips and the red fabric is now just a splash of red throughout. It is very beatifil. I am making one right now with a brown print and a tan print and then I am using a rust color print to use as the fabric that will be the 'splash of color--so it can just bring out some of the rust color in the brown and tan prints. I really like doing them. I have made 5 different quilts with that pattern and now my son wants me to make one for his 2 yr. old daughter but he wants it in brown and prints fabrics. It is hard to find brown and pink fabrics that aren't plain colored. I am having trouble finding thre coordinating prints. I am giong to Sioux Falls next week and am going to go to the Quilt Shop there 'cause they have lots of "fun" fabrics there and I might try to persuade my son to choose some different colors. He will be with me so I will show him some and hopefully come up with three fun coordinating fabrics. Good luck with yours. They reaaly are fun to do --and simple. I work full time and do long arm quilting for customers so I really have to pick easy patterns when I make a quilt--or it would take me forever to get a quilt done!

Greeter Eva 11-05-2011 06:03 PM

Those are some terrific ideas.

Margie 11-05-2011 08:12 PM

OMG that is fabulous! I am not sure exactly how you did it, you should do a tutorial on it! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

I'll try to attach a picture. I did most of the blocks while on vacation in the summer of 2010 using my old mechanical machine, Martelli Rotary Cutter, small cut & press board and 2 square rulers--6.5" and 12.5". Hubby & the kids fuss when I make them leave extra space to haul my mini, mobile quilt studio but they get over it--LOL.

You can cut them whatever size you like -- this last one I'm working on I made them big - 6 1/2" because that's how wide my ruler is - didn't want to over think it, and I love working with large blocks for quick projects. Just remember that your middle section loses an extra seam allowance - so a total of 1" seam allowances there - so I don't think I'd go any smaller than 2 or 2 1/2".

Thanks so much for the idea and all the comments. Love your quilt and want to try one myself!

Thank you so much for the help, as I did not want to start cutting fabric and it being to small.

I've made several, all with 3 colors. The first three are ones I made for my sons' two Christmases ago. The gold is used in all three quilts, and two of them the red and the gold were the same:

Thomas the train for my 10 year old:

Lightening McQueen for my 9 year old:

And Curious George for the 7 year old:

I am actually much happier with the baby quilts I made. Using a smaller strip set I think they came out much better than the one's I made for my sons.

They are super easy. You don't need a specific tute.

You make as many 9-patches as you need for your top like this:
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1294622680.jpg

Then you cut the block in half equally horizontally and vertically:

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1294622664.jpg

Then you have 4 equal pieces. Piece 1 is top left. Piece 2 is top right. Piece 3 is bottom left. And piece 4 is bottom right. WITHOUT TURNING THEM, swap pieces 1 and 4 or pieces 2 and 3, as long as it's the same 2 pieces in every block. It will look like this:

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1294622620.jpg

Then you just stitch them together:
