Disappearing nine patch question

Has anyone every made a whole quilt using just 3 fabrics for this pattern? I have tried to search but this new one is confusing for me.

Thanks

SWEETPEACHES 11-03-2011 07:20 PM

Do you mean with the 4 corners one fabric, the center a different fabric and the 4 middles a diff fabric? That would work. All your blocks would be the same which would be fine, imo

Holice 11-03-2011 07:45 PM

Yes I have and it turned out great. I will post a picture when I return home in a couple days. I really like the three color better. Mine is yellow with blue center. I prefer the structure and look of the minimal selection of color/pattern

nycbgirl 11-03-2011 07:57 PM

I just learmed the D9P yesterday and did 3 blocks very quickly and I love it!!!! But I used 9 different charms and they are lovely!!!

Here is one I did. Pic not to good I had forgot to take a pic and DD sent me one on phone. It is black, pink and a black/white/pink print.

So glad you asked this question. I like the design in the picture and hadn't been able to figure out exactly how to get this effect. Now I need to find the time to make one.

I did a twisted version with 3 fabrics. After I cut the 9 patches, I added half-square triangles and mixed them in with at least 1 normal D9P block to create different stars. I'll try to attach a picture. I did most of the blocks while on vacation in the summer of 2010 using my old mechanical machine, Martelli Rotary Cutter, small cut & press board and 2 square rulers--6.5" and 12.5". Hubby & the kids fuss when I make them leave extra space to haul my mini, mobile quilt studio but they get over it--LOL.

charity-crafter 11-04-2011 07:05 AM

Yes, I've made it with 3 fabrics. It turns out nice.

AZTeri 11-04-2011 07:07 AM

Beverly, that is GORGEOUS! What a take on a D9P!

QuiltnLady1 11-04-2011 07:24 AM

Good to know that 3 colors look good.

dd 11-04-2011 07:32 AM

My grandson really liked that dinosaur quilt. Thanks, one more project for the list.lol

dunster 11-04-2011 07:42 AM

I made one from a "kit" made up by one of the guilds. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...s-t162915.html

misseva 11-04-2011 08:40 AM

ooooooooh beautiful quilts!

Drue 11-04-2011 08:48 AM

Good looking quilts.... I have been racking my brain to come up with a pattern for using 4 fabrics, with one being a medium size print focus pattern that I have had for years. I think I can adapt this method easily. Thanks

Thank you. It was super fast & easy. I started laying it out like a normal D9P but it was too plain. I got the idea for a the twisted version from a link someone posted on this board.

It is now my oldest grandson's big boy quilt. He graduated from a toddler bed to a twin bed and his baby quilt just didn't cut it any more.

I always have to take my "stuff" along, too. But it keeps me happy and when Mama is happy, everyone is happy. LOL

I love the 3-color choice for D9P. This is on my to-do list!

Sallyflymi 11-04-2011 12:01 PM

Like the 3 color combination. Works very well.

SaraSewing 11-04-2011 12:08 PM

Three colors work well - they are fun to do, and the receiver is often VERY impressed with it! (and SO easy!)

Margo in Maine 11-04-2011 12:17 PM

Shirley I love it!! I have done things for my washer and dryer...but never thought of putting another color...great idea..

Scraps 11-04-2011 12:25 PM

I like all of yours and what a different take with the triangles! I did a scrappy and it lost its affect. I like the center block to all be the same so the small squares make a pattern. Fun and fast!

whinnytoo 11-04-2011 12:52 PM

those are awesome quilts, Love doing D9P! if you want only 3 colors, be sure your center block is the 'different color'

Ok, I didn't understand half of what you said you did, but this is one of the prettiest quilts I've ever seen! I LOVE the stars. Love the colors too, but the stars will jump out at you. I will reread your post until hopefully I can see what you are talking about. This is wonderful!

ManiacQuilter2 11-04-2011 01:47 PM

GREAT IDEAS that everyone has posted!!!

It was on this board where I got the idea to do a twisted version. Here's the link: http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...al-t16190.html

I did mine more like this version: http://lynbrown.com/wp-content/uploa...Gen-Quilt2.pdf but I combined at least 4 regular D9P sub-units with the twisted sub-units to make each star and I purposefully made each star different. I like the secondary pattern that emerges when the center square in the original 9 patch unit is different than the corners as whinnytoo mentioned earlier.

I just found this has changed.Havent been able to get on for awhile ,so busy.I dont like it but maybe after I have been on for awhile I will get use to it.I just don't like change.

Dina 11-04-2011 03:55 PM

I am going to try to attach a picture. If it works, it is of the d9p I just finished, with 3 fabrics.

Okay, if this works....IF....I have posted 2 pictures. If not....well, I tried. More to learn, I guess.

Dina 11-04-2011 03:56 PM

Guess I have more to learn. :(

So glad you asked this question, and even happier about the great answers, thank you all, and my "to-do" list just had one more thing added! piecefully the old one

I have made a few D9Ps and love the pattern. The first and second quilt pictures were made with just 3 fabrics--I really like the 3 fabric look. The first picture shows two D9P quilts I made for my twin grandnieces--I reversed the purple and floral blocks in these quilts. The third quilt made for my grandnephew has an embroidered WTP center block. The forth quilt for another grandnephew was made using various 1930's fabrics--the center block was always the same fabric...

I just recently investigated the Disappearing 9 Patch pattern and really loved it so it's on my "To Do" list. Think I will try it with just 3 fabrics. Beverly, that quilt is absolutely amazing! Not sure if I'll attempt that one yet but I'm going to put that on my list too.

harvsstuff 11-05-2011 04:33 AM

Hey Barb glad to see you and Sue with your quilts. Good job.

moreland 11-05-2011 04:54 AM

I love the look of your quilt but I cannot seem to see how you added the extra half-square triangles. Could you explain that part a bit. Thanks a bunch.

Beverly,
Great quilt but I am totally in the dark as to how you went from a D9P to your end product. I would need a road map. Nice work! If you ever get around to it I would love for you to do a tutorial on how you accomplished this. Ann in TN

BK...what a beautiful quilt! Love you twist on the D9P

talkn58 11-05-2011 05:52 AM

emsgranny 11-05-2011 05:54 AM

3 color D9P works great. I have done one that way.

shnnn 11-05-2011 06:08 AM

I'm working on one with 3 colors right now -- I just have 2 sides of the last border to attach -- I love it - started it a week ago, and had all but the borders done in 24 hours. When there is better light in here I'll take a picture -- it's still rather dark.
