I am working on a disappearing nine patch top and I am not liking it so maybe I am doing something wrong. In each 9 patch, I have 4 squares of the same pattern and 5 (1 being the center) of another. My centers are different in each block. Should the center be the constant in each block? Do you alternate the outside corners? Thanks for you input!

I have done a D9P with just two different fabrics, and with totally different for a 'scrappy' look, it is important to have dark fabrics on the outside corners and centre, and light in the four central outer blocks.
If you want a symetrical look when you cut through the centre, just swap over the top right for the bottom left on every block and resew, or if you want a totally random look just turn each corner any which way you please..... Hope this helps.. Here's a picture of the charm squares quilt and two colour version :D |
I have made these two different ways.
1. With 3 fabrics. One with a nice print for the corners, one that matched very well for the 4 side pieces and then much less fabric for the 1 center square. 2. With 2 fabrics. One with a nice print for the corners and then a coordinating color for the 4 sides and one center. When the D9P block is finished, no matter which kind I made, the center square was cut into four pieces and then the side pieces looked like strips "framing" the corner pieces. I hope that answered your question. When the quilt top is finished, all your corner pieces were framed with the other pieces and the other pieces made a look similar to a link chain. It's a pretty cool effect. |
Thanks for all your information!!! I think I was trying to use too many patterns. Each block was a different pattern and it just didn't flow right!
|
Yes Rose it looks much better if you can contrast the fabrics, using plain and patterned good luck, and dont forget to post some piccies soon :D

|
Thanks Izy....:-) I like the soft pastels too.....:-) Yours is so soft and pretty!!
|
They are both gorgeous :D :D :D

Love that pattern and it would be perfect for Prayer Quilts we make at our church. Can you give the the cut sizes for the four pieces in each block and the measurement of the finished block? Love your variations and color choices. Cheerful quilts.

pastel is a 3 inch block ......the colorful one is 5 inch blocks...
5" is 38 x 54 a 15 inch block 3" is 9 inch block Thank you sure fun to make and fast |
Thanks to everyone for the help--you all are awesome and a wealth of information! I think I got it! Gcathie--did you make 4 blocks and then split them apart and then combined a section of each block to get the 4 colors in your pastel one? It is beautiful!!!
|
I am working on a d9p too. I am using 4 colours, including some black denim from son's old jeans. I was having a tough time getting the pattern laid out right, which surprised me cz I thought it was 'simple' and it is, ONCE you get it right. :D
|
Thanks for your reply BUT can you tell me the measurements of the four individual pieces that make up one block. Measurements for the 15" block. I'm sure I could make my own pattern, but I'd rather cheat and have you tell me if you would.
|
I really want to try the D9P but in trueth it kinda scares me. So is it basically ..... you make up a 9 patch? Ok I can do that, but then i see longer blocks. this is where i get lost.. All your quilts are beautiful ladies :D
|
Bev- you can do it! You make an awesome 9 patch- you just have to cut them up (see Cathe's first pic) and then reassemble.
Hey, even I am going to try it and you know how I'm such a wus about learning something. I'll experiment and if it doesn't look good, off to the scrap bin to make something else. |

|
the pastel block is 9.... 3 inche blocks......which makes the nine patch.......then you cut in half....as said....(look at photo's)
the other one is 9.... 5 inch blocks......made into a 9 patch.....then cut down the middle to make four turn the way you want and sew back together...good luck you all can do this....once you get the hang of it ,,,It is fun to do |

This was my D9P. I used about 11 different fat quarters that I felt looked good together. I had a lot of material left over, in fact first I made a tote with the fats, then liked it so much I made the quilt.
|
Perfect. Thanks much and wish me luck.
|
a 15inch(finished) block would be made from a nine-patch of 5 1/2 inch squares.
edit: oops, sorry, looks like this question was already answered. |
I experimented with some numbers and I'm using a 18 1/2" finished 9 patch. Then I cut, swap and sew. When completed I have a twin top.....which I'm sure my DS will love. It's either going to be Thomas or CARS...whichever I can find.

gcathie - your two quilts are gorgeous - as always. I'm going nutz
trying to count the different fabrics that you used. The pastel was easy to count - the multicolored - not so easy. Sandybeach - your quilt is beautiful too. That's it - I'm jumping in too! What could go wrong, right? or wrong? |
I am making a disappearing 9 patch for my friend. Since I am handsewing it, quilting line goes just diagonally with three straight lines. How is everyone working on the quilting lines? Stipples?
|
youme, do you mean you hand pieced it? or you are hand quilting it? I can't imagine making this pattern with hand piecing because you slice through the stitching, but maybe you could find a way.
|
I want to make one of these. Just haven't had the time yet. Yours are beautiful.
|
Yes, I hand pieced it and hand quilting. I sewed it with very tiny stitches and cut it with rotally cutter. Let me show you my disappearing nine patch quilt when it all done.

Just make your 9 patch, then cut it in half, then in half again. Then arrange the blocks to where you like them the best! Easy, peasy! |
Can some one tell me a web site for the disappearing 9 block pattern that I can download the pattern off of?
|
This is a tutorial I used for mine.

Cathie, your pastel was made by making up 5 different blocks using the same color with the white, right? I love that one. They are all great. All of you gals did well. I've made 2 D9P tops so far, but neither has been finished. One is layered, the other is still waiting. :? |
yep your right....the white is the constant in my D9....:-)....
|
gcathie, I LOVE those pastel blocks. I think I must go dig through my stash and see what I can come up with.
|
I like the D9P as well as about any. It is so easy to create different looks, by the placement of color, or how you lay out the blocks when re-sewing. Our group came up with three different patterns when re-sewing and one new one when putting the blocks together. I like to use 3 colors.
|
I'm getting ready to start another one. I got out my colored pencils as I couldn't quite make a good decision.
SO...I used pencil as my Thomas fabric that I've already purchased, then red for red and blue for blue. I drew out the pattern of 9 D9P blocks with red as the center square and blue for the sides, then drew out another the same way with red for the sides and blue for the center. I couldn't believe how different they ended up. It really helped me figure out what to put where. I can't wait to start stitching. |
Hi,
I have been using that nine patch patern to use up the 5 fat quarter packs I get from Micheals and A.C. Moore with their 40 or 50% off coupons. They make great Linus quilts. |
Hi Gals...I'm not always able to come by..but checked in to find this post...and surprised..I am currently working on this very same pattern. I LOVE IT. Mine is done with the Faded Memories collection and is perfect for my Shabby Chic look. I am putting wide rick rack on each square going in different directions. CUTE.
I loved looking at what has been done here. Happy Quilting. |
If you go to my profile and click my webshots..you can view under WIP the one I am doing and also my daughter's who just started quilting and this pattern.
