The colors are attractive. The difference in the blues is not noticeable. Put it on a bed and stand by the door.
Also, instead of trying to machine quilt it, you can always tie it. Anyone who receives this quilt will be delighted to receive it.

Susy 11-06-2013 05:32 PM

I love the top! How about doing wavy lines the other way (or, quilting the cr** out of it which is what I end up doing, usually, stiff as a board but apparently they do get cuddly after a few washings)Has it been washed and dried yet?

sewingsuz 11-06-2013 05:41 PM

I like your quilt and you will also when it is finished and you don't look at it for a time. When you go back and look you will say. This is not so bad after all.

Cecelia363 11-06-2013 06:24 PM

I like it! It would make a hugely appreciated QOV ! It's almost Veterans Day!

MissQuilter 11-06-2013 06:50 PM

Give it a bit of time and distance. You are being too critical of yourself. I always wait a bit, then look at it from a distance. At first all I can see is the mistakes, the wrong choices. After a bit you can see it as itself. Isn't it wonderful how we grow and progress and learn as we go along! It is really lovely!

Oh yes, and you need to build up your stock of quilts. My children and grandchildren have always played with them, made tents and forts, wrapped up the dog, pretended they were camping out... so you need a good stock for that sweet little girl to pretend with!

Farm Quilter 11-06-2013 11:24 PM

Lovely quilt - definitely too good for the dog!!! Please, we are our own worst critics with our quilting...it is not as bad as it looks to you. Bind it and give to someone on your Christmas list - they will love and appreciate it!!! We see all the imperfections in our work, all the recipient will see is beautiful quilt with fabulous texture, where every stitch has been taken with love.

callen 11-07-2013 04:53 AM

Now, that it's done with the binding on I think it looks great. I am so glad you finished it & believe me there are lots of people out there that would love to have this beauty. Looks great on your deck & will look great on the back of your chair too. Congrats for your perseverance.

Elisabrat 11-07-2013 05:06 AM

I say the rest are right.. either put it away and look at it later , like in a few months not few hours and if you still hate it.. donate it. its going to keep someone warm and TWO: its ok to use different blues in a project people do that all the time.. Three: I don't see anything wrong. Its not a bad little quilt at all. A non quilter does not see what a quilter does so your truly worrying over nothing and if you are wise when you gift it DO NOT POINT OUT what you see as a flaw and they will most likely not even see things that bug the heck out of you. And keep it away from the dog ok? its much better than all that.

Wonnie 11-07-2013 05:23 AM

Now for my 2-cents worth.....

First of all, put the binding on.
Second, if it's so bad in your minds eye that you don't want to keep it, why would you want to give it to someone else?
Third, repurpose it! If you don't feel it works out well enough for a bed or wall hanging why not use it for a picnic blanket? Stop at a deli...spread it out on the grass in the park...eat, read, enjoy!
Keep it in the car. It could, also, be used for a tablecloth on a roadside picnic table.
You put way too much time on it to get rid of it....you learned a lot by being patient enough to keep at it until it was all pieced together. Good for you!!! It will look better to you as time goes on and I think it's just fine!!
Thanks for sharing!

Close up of my attempt at wavy lines. I *think* the part that eats me up is the thread. I thought it would pop and looks good but dang it looks bad. Really really bad. I love the quilting on the backing. That just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I don't know what to do with it right now. I just know my head won't let me move past it till I finish it.

When I look at the quilt, I see a very busy inside & nothing on the borders. It really needs a heavy quilting pattern in each border. That would make it look like a finished product instead of partially done. If that extra bit of quilting was added, you would have a totally different look. I would suggest some kind of a theme... spirals, circles, a flowery pattern. Maybe trees. Go to Urban Elementz and look at "Loose Threads" or "Cool Beans". Anything but something straight. The lines need to be softened. Overall, I like what you did, but you just need to finish it.

You have it at the stage I get when I make a garment. I've done all the seams, but I haven't hemmed it and I just hate the way it's turning out. I get the hem in it and all of a sudden, it's beautiful. Your ugly duckling will turn into a swan when you get that quilting on it.

sewbizgirl 11-07-2013 05:42 AM

There's nothing ugly about your quilt! It just looks as though your stitch length got a little tight while quilting. The quilt is puffy tho, and should hide that. Try washing it when done. I like that you have different navys in the little blocks. It gives your quilt more interest and 'movement'... all the same navy would have made the quilt 'flat'. Forget about the quilting since there is no way you can change it now... just enjoy the quilt as a pretty, warm blanket!

pmkbecker 11-07-2013 06:03 AM

i would either give it away or toss it..i have done that..i quilted a whole quilt in clear thread and i just hated it, so i walked to the trash and dumped....

quiltmom04 11-07-2013 06:11 AM

I think it would be wonderful to donate it, or if your child likes it, let her have it. But at least you've learned that until your quilting is much better ( at least to satisfy YOU) , don't try to have it "pop", just blend it in. But really, it's lovely.

star619 11-07-2013 06:35 AM

Wow, you're really hard on yourself. Many people will not even attempt anything that hard! Chefs have to rinse and chop vegetables for YEARS before they're allowed to cook. Couture seamstresses have to do menial tasks before they even have a chance at making a garment. My sister looks at my quilts and asks, "Why would you put yourself through all that agony?" (She has trouble making decisions.) I just tell her that it's a creative outlet, AND that it's not brain surgery. If you make a mistake, no one will die! I really like your quilt (true) and I think you can finish/not finish it, and make a decision later. God bless.

reginalovesfabric 11-07-2013 06:59 AM

there is nothing wrong with it don't beat yourself up about it....it's pretty and remember no one is perfect, thank God for your ability to sew and create most people can't or won't

wendiq 11-07-2013 07:28 AM

Quit whining and realize how lucky you are to have fabric, thread and a sewing machine to make this. Someone will love it so suck it in and finish it. Whomever you give it to will now see the flaws and if they do, shame on them.....I, personally, think it looks good, but I say that from looking at a picture. The first thing that comes to mind is a red, white and blue quilt of valor type.......finish it, send it on it's way to get it out of your face and move on.....:) (all this said by one who has done the same thing.....)

JANICE E. 11-07-2013 07:29 AM

Nothing is perfect in life, things happen, but you did your best and next time you'll do better. But family & friends don't mind if it's not a great wavy line. They are happy you love them that much to make it for them. Stop beating yourself up. I've done worse and my family never noticed. BE HAPPPY!!!!!!!!!

rosiewell 11-07-2013 09:40 AM

chalk it up to experience, things you learn not to do it again, and then put it aside and never look at it again, unless you want to take it apart, been there done that.

sharin'Sharon 11-07-2013 10:36 AM

I haven't had THAT many things go wrong in one quilt , but I certainly would keep it. I wouldn't care if it reminded me of all the BAD things that could happen; and you will NOT have that many things go wrong again because your learned so much from that project, so let it be THAT reminder. It's too pretty and too much work to get rid of it. Your daughter may always treasure it; remembering it as you worked on it. Will be anxious to hear of your final decision. HAPPY QUILTING and thanks for sharing.

Tiggersmom 11-07-2013 10:50 AM

I agree with ckcowl...........get the binding on there and give it to 'blankets for kids' or another organization.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe try a heavier weight thread next time if that's what you are not liking.

We All have those quilts we wonder "what was I thinking???" or every step is a pain in the {you know where}......Live and Learn.

Auntie Em 11-07-2013 12:20 PM

I love your quilt!!!! Beautiful job with the quilting too!!!

GrannyHanaDa 11-07-2013 12:28 PM

I think it's fine!
But if you are really unhappy with it gift to "Project Christmas" in your area, someone that would get nothing for
Christmas will be happy to receive such a beautiful gift.

Capri 11-07-2013 01:54 PM

I would be putting in wavy horizontal lines as well so that you definately know that it's meant to be wavy and off centre. I would add a border design in contrasting thread that draws the eye and reduces the puffiness to make the centre stand out more. The random lighter blue actually does look as if it's meant to be and I think it lifts it and makes it look interesting. I just don't think you've quite finished yet lol Hope this helps!

solstice3 11-07-2013 04:14 PM

You are your own worse critic. If you gift it some one will love it. If not that put it away got a while and bring it out on a rainy day and snuggle

lizzy 11-07-2013 05:48 PM

Your quilt top is very nice and pretty and if you wash and dry it, you will hardly be able to see the quilting. Who looks at the quilting job anyway. you are not planning on entering it in a quilt show. You put in a lot of work already. Just put it aside for a few days and wash and dry it. I would suggest you use one of those color grabbers for any red or blue fade a little. They are famous for that. The members had some good ideas but just don't give up on all that work you have accomplished.

franklindixie 11-07-2013 06:09 PM

I don't really think it's all that bad. I've seen a lot of really bad quilts. this is definitely not one of them. If you're really unhappy with the quilting, try more lines. the more quilting you do, the less you'll notice the first rows of stitching. that being said, there are many many ways to make good use of a quilt you don't love: project linus, the local hospital or another charity, quilts of hope, habitat for humanity, to name a few. please don't beat yourself up any longer. It's just a quilt, not the end of the world...and seriously, not that bad at all -- in fact I love the pieced middle! - s

tate_elliott 11-07-2013 07:26 PM

Everyone has different tastes. You hate the quilt. On the other hand, you wrote "Heck my toddler is obsessed with it." There's your answer - a quilt that you love, your child may run from. This quilt he/she loves! Finish it for him/her.

P.S. In my mind, your child's name is Heck because you wrote "Heck my toddler."

Tate

cathyvv 11-07-2013 08:00 PM

We all have one of 'those' quilts in our quilt making history.

Put it aside - out of sight - for about 6 months. 6 months is usually time enough to let your bad memories of making the quilt get foggy enough to evaluate the quilt more objectively. If you are still disappointed with it after 6 months, then finish it up and donate it.

We all know the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" I suspect this quilt just needs to find the right 'beholder' to love it!

cathyvv 11-07-2013 08:13 PM

I love the top, too! I think the entire quilt top 'pops' all by itself! When a quilt top is as striking as this one is, you almost don't have to quilt it at all.

Having said that, if you're really unhappy with it, wash the quilt after you put the binding on. Washing and some shrinkage often makes the quilting more obvious.

Kwiltr 11-07-2013 08:13 PM

Wow! You are really being hard on yourself on this one! I think its really pretty and while you know where your mistakes are, 90% of the population would just be impressed with the quilt as a whole and not even see them. I'd either finish it up and donate it now if you can't stand to keep it around, or put it away for awhile and move onto something fun and when in a better state of mind pull it out and take another look at it.

cathyvv 11-07-2013 08:22 PM

Your toddler, the only quilt police person that matters, loves it! The quilt is a total success, no mistakes whatsoever, not one bit of any kind of 'not quite right'...your toddler loves it!

There's really no more to be said on the subject because your toddler loves it just the way it is! She is the right 'beholder' for that quilt. And she has good taste, too!

cathyvv 11-07-2013 08:24 PM

So sweet! It's easy to see why you love her!

Gladys 11-07-2013 08:28 PM

Giving it away to charity is always an option and then it becomes a treasure for someone. Think about it keeping a little child warm or the only cover for an abused Mom and her children. What a great purpose for something that has caused you so much frustration. You will get better. You can always send it to me. :)

Oops I just read about your toddler. Perhaps it's already keeping a little one warm.

nightquilter 11-07-2013 09:28 PM

Please step back and look at this quilt. This quilt is very pretty. I know you have had many problems, but we do not see your mistakes. If this makes you fill good that is all that really counts.Think ,will this still keep you warm or would you lose sleep laying under this? When you wash this maybe the thread will not stand out as much to you.But put this on your bed and see if you can move on.I really do like it and maybe in time you will also.

tenngal 11-09-2013 08:05 PM

I think it's very pretty and would put it away for a week or so and then ome back to it.

IBQUILTIN 11-10-2013 09:47 AM

It is a very pretty quilt. Put it away for a few days and look at it again. You'll be surprised how much more you like it. Sometimes the redo's and unsews just get us in a mood. It really is a nice quilt

Sadheart 11-10-2013 10:18 AM

We are our own worst critics. Be assured there are many who would love the quilt as it is.
Many things we as quilters find as imperfections are really 'Aritistic license' and should be
acknowledged as such to ourselves. I find that many times the spirit moves me to make
mistakes to keep me humble. Silly of me I know.
Really it is a Beautiful Quilt. Thank you for sharing.

pelikanbus62 11-10-2013 11:19 AM

For what it is worth I like it. It has your personal touches and that makes it special. I do hear what you are saying though, I am my own worst critic. But listen to what friends and family have to say.

carolaug 11-10-2013 11:27 AM

I think it looks great! Once its dried and crinkled it will look even better.

Susan01948 11-11-2013 07:05 PM

What if you did the same kind of quilting in the other direction? It's not so bad, but I know what it's like to not like what you have. Just donate it and chalk it up to experience. Susan G
