DIY pin point protectors (AKA Pinmoors)

2 Attachment(s)
One day I was in my DH's workshop and saw a bag with a roll of caulking backer rod in it. This is a 1/2" X20 ft. roll of a spongy plastic like material that is used to fill large gaps before you caulk so you don't have to use so much caulk. Since we had had it for a long time, he said I could have it. I chopped it up into
1/2" to 3/4" pieces. Out of a 20 ft. roll I figure I got about 320 to 480 pieces. Not nearly as pretty as Pinmoors, but at $3.48 for a 20 ft. roll of backer rod vs. 50 Pinmoors for $19.48, well, I figure "pretty is as pretty does." I checked Home Depot's web site, and $3.48 is what they charge for a 20 ft. roll. Here are some pictures so you know what I mean:

patimint 03-26-2012 04:34 PM

Oh, I love that. I have been wanted to buy pinmoors, but think they are pretty expensive. I was sure somwhere there was something I could use to make my own. Now I know how. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Will be getting some on my next trip to town to shop.

What a great idea. Going to Home Depot in a few days and am going to pick me up some of this. Thanks for posting your idea. I'm sure it will help a lot of us.

Great idea! You never know what you'll find out in the workshop that can move into the sewing room. I'm going to look for a package the next time I get dragged into the Home Depot Store with my husband.

LivelyLady 03-26-2012 06:05 PM

You are so clever and intuitive! I'll be going to Home Depot tomorrow. Thank you so much!

jaciqltznok 03-26-2012 07:17 PM

I was going to show this as well...made mine months ago! BOY you get a TON of these things for your $3.00!

Val in IN 03-26-2012 07:23 PM

WOW!!! Those are great. I didn't want to spend the money on the pinmoors either. I've been using the little erasers, but this is a much better idea!! Thanks for the tip:)

BellaBoo 03-26-2012 08:39 PM

Good idea. You have to remember that Pinmoors are a one time buy. They won't wear out and are self healing. The reason I buy the Pinmoors is because they stay securely on the pins until I pull them off. No accidental pin pricks. I like the pretty colors too.

Stitchnripper 03-27-2012 03:27 AM

great idea. Will check it out.

I can hear it all now at Home Depot! " Hey everybody, open those doors wide! Clear the Aisles! Get ready on Aisle 6! Here come those beautiful, talented quilting ladies after those Backin' Rods! Everybody step lively, put on your smiling faces, those ladies are here to do business! Look at them come! Maybe we shoulda put an urn of coffee in here for them, they've probably be doin' that quiltin' all night! Wish I'd have gotten a case of candy bars, I hear they like chocolate...................

roadrunr 03-27-2012 05:47 AM

That will work for me. I'm all about doing something as inexpensively as possible.

yellowwroses 03-27-2012 05:58 AM

Very clever idea...I am going to make some myself! Thank you so much for sharing! All the many helpful tips that you learn here by such smart and inventive quilters is just wonderful! :)

DH had some of the Baker Rod in the garage so I cut some this morning to compare to the Pinmoors. The Pinmoors worked so much better for me.

Hi there

I was using hearing protectors! They are yellow in color, and come 4 to a package. I got those at Home Depot too! I cannot for the life of me remember what I paid for them, however if your husband, son, daughter or friend works for a place that makes loud noises, these ear protectors are generally available to them. I'm not suggesting that you ask them to steal for you, however if a few fall your way every now and again, keep them!

However your idea looks simple enough and looks like a great idea!

Great tip, as much as I would love to buy Pin moors I just can't justify them in our extremely tight budget right now. This will work great for now-thanks for sharing the tip.

What a great idea! I've wanted to buy the pinmores but just don't have the $ to spend right now. Thanks

zennia 03-28-2012 03:00 AM

Thank You. I am going to get my hubby right on this. He goes to Home Depot almost everyday.

jeanneb52 03-28-2012 03:22 AM

clever lady I'm sending the old man to the store now and then he can cut them up for me and keep busy for a while. Win, win.

Lisa49 03-28-2012 03:40 AM

What is the purpose of Pinmoors? I am new to this and am just curious. Thanks.

Wintersewer 03-28-2012 03:46 AM

What pins do you all use with your "Pinmoors"? I used the flower top, but found that they are too thin and bend easily and one top has come off, too. I just got some button top heat resistant ones, but they are thick and not as sharp...hard to push through the fabric. Does anyone know how to sharpen pins, without a "strawberry"?

klgls 03-28-2012 04:02 AM

Thanks for the great idea - I was seriously thinking about buying some pinmoors but have delayed because of the cost. Going to Home Depot now!!

GammaLou 03-28-2012 04:27 AM

Great solution to the huge price for the PinMores!!

Barbpr 03-28-2012 04:51 AM

Fabulous idea. Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of trying the ear plugs and was checking on prices yesterday. You have saved me time. Thanks!!!

KathyKat 03-28-2012 05:04 AM

Great idea!

Terrylgl 03-28-2012 06:27 AM

That's using the ol' noggin. Good for you. I will now do the same as I wanted to purchase the Pinmoors, but they are costly. Glad I decided to wait. Thanks for the great tip!!

butterflies5518 03-28-2012 06:41 AM

What a cool idea - thanks for sharing.

vondae 03-28-2012 06:50 AM

You might even try the little foam ear plugs. You can buy in large containers at Home Depot, Lowe's, Sam's club, etc.

SewExtremeSeams 03-28-2012 06:52 AM

Great idea! We quilters are a clever and inventive bunch, huh? I wonder if HD will temporarily have a shortage due to the new quilter customer base like Harbor Freight did when quilters discovered their 45mm carpet cutter blades worked in our rotary cutters! :D :D :D

mackenzie 03-28-2012 07:39 AM

You can sharpen pinpoints by going to the fishing tackle department of any store that carries tackle and they will have a little gadget that sharpens fish hooks and it works great on pins and hand sewing needles. I wouldn't use it on machine needles however. It is not expensive and it is easy to use.

tilliestotes 03-28-2012 08:55 AM

I am new to this quilting, so what are the pinmoors used for?

tilliestotes 03-28-2012 09:02 AM

what are the pinpoints used for
