I started to quilt back in the 90's,at that time I bought nothing but yardage. The last few years I have went more to kits.I like that I don't waste time or money looking for fabric ,buying more then I need,or buying to pieces because iam not sure which one I want, and iam ready to cut and sew right aways. And Lord knows I don't need more scraps.
I bought one but haven't made yet (had 3 years). I have such a fun time with colors that I just can't let someone else pick them
I have purchased a few kits this year. This is something new for me too as I always figure out the pattern and then get the yardage. I've enjoyed the kits that I did purchase but sometimes I think that for the price of the kits, you could get everything for the quilt, including the pattern and have left over fabric if you just put it together yourself. The cost of convenience!!!!
No, but I admire them and then think they look too expensive.

Too much of a design it yourself-er to do kits. I did see one kit at a quilt show that caught my eye till I learned the price. Doing it a bit at a time doesn't assault the pocketbook quite so terribly. Plus I want plenty left over to do something else with!
I got one (Someone else bought it) but the quilt turned out really nice (Smaller than I would normally make) but its pretty I plan on making the pattern bigger and of course buying my own fabric choices If I had not liked the fabric in the kit I would not have made it.

Ive bever purchased a kit. Its too structured for me. I want something that no one else has. and I like having left over fabric for making scrappy. With a kit if I error, whick i often do, theres no way to just cut more. You have more faith in yourself than I.
No, never have. I like to make my own choices of fabrics. I have "won" three kits that I put together but have not purchased them.
I have started buying some kits. When DH and I travel, he will take me to many quilt shops, but he doesn't like to spend a lot of time in each one. If I see a kit I like, or one he likes, I will get it. If I am shopping alone, without other quilters or DH, then I take the time to pull my own fabric. Enjoy both. Kits are nice when you just want to start sewing and don't want to have to decide on fabric. Many times the kits are quick so you get instant gratification! :)
I have gotten a few over the last 10 years. One I have finished the top and waiting to quilt it. The other actually had all the pieces cut. I have it laid out, but have not sewed it. I am one that tends to get the pattern if I like it and then get the fabric. I then get to create my own kits that end up in my to do pile :D
Nope - don't want to see my quilt all over the place
Yes, I sometimes do - especially in the beginning of this journey. And now I've just bought a McKenna Ryan kit in order to get all the fabrics in one shot!
I've been buying kits, however sometimes I change parts of it if I don't like all the color choices. I don't really have time to shop for fabrics right now.
I see a lot of kit patterns I like, but I don't care for the fabric colors so I don't buy kits. :-D
I don't usually buy kits, as they are too expensive.
I buy sale kits all the time. I figure out the price per yard and either make the kit or rob the fabric for something else entirely.
I have never thought of buying a kit, but, with all the trouble I have visualizing an end product, selecting fabric, and deciding on a pattern, this might be what I should do next. Food for thought...for me at least.
I just bought a kit. I probably could have collected the fabric from different stores but this way everything was there. There was one fabric that I hadn't seen in the LQS and I didn't think I could find it so that cinched the purchase.
The only couple of quilt kits I bought were Kaffe Fassett ones. The stores that sell them put together fThe fabrics for quilts in his books. They cut the same fabric and yardage stated in the books pattern. I dont really consider them kits, just saves me from shopping online and listing all the fabrics called for. His quilts call for so many fabrics. The store saves me from that chore.
I don't buy kits. I think part of the fun of quilting is finding a pattern, altering it, (I never do a quilt strickly off the pattern) then searching for the perfect fabric for the quilt. I really enjoy the planning process.
Some places charge a premium for kits, others don't, it really depends on the store.
The nice thing about kits is that you can get those that have a lot of matched fabrics in them, from the same fabric line, using the same dye-lots, so you don't have to chase all over finding and color-matching fabrics. |
I love kits. I DON'T like all the fabric choosing the rest of you are raving about! For every 5 quilts I make maybe 2 of them are from kits. I also like to buy fabric bundles - either 3 or 5 yards of coordinating fabric bundled together. I have patterns for both sizes. Love kits.

Not yet

I have bought a few kits. In fact, I am about to order another one! I buy kits when I love the fabrics and don't want to chase around collecting them. Also, I am beginning to get into more Primitive-type quilts and none of my LQSs stock this style so a kit works nicely for me.
That being said the majority of the quilts that I have made have not been from kits. |
I've bought and finished a few, but now that I have more confidence had rather design my own and choose the fabrics.
I have purchased a few. They're great for gifts, or if I love the pattern and don't want to coordinate fabrics. I don't buy them often since I typically prefer to make my own quilts, my way, without someone dictating the colors etc.
i have on occassion spent money on a kit- but turns out 9 out of 10 times i will replace the fabric anyway- because i don't like what is in the kit- and i seldom actually follow someone else's pattern anyway---of i want the exact same quilt as someone else has i'll go to penneys and buy one
so for me they are a waste of money- but for someone who wants ... that quilt....in those fabrics i can see the appeal- seems like a really expensive way to go though- to not have anything left over for other projects- guess i'm just not a kit type of quilter |
Yes I do buy kits!
I bought one for a table runner last year and I liked it! It was on sale and I couldn't have gotten a better price for the fabrics individually. I haven't seen a quilt yet in just the colors I'd want, but I'd consider a kit again if the colors and price were right!
As a fairly new quilter, kits really help me coordinate fabrics.
I just bought a bargello kit with 20 gorgeous fabrics in fall colors. I would not have been able to select the fabrics on my own. I also saw the completed kit, so I know I will love the quilt. I think kits are great! Elise |

Well, I started quilting and now I'm saving my pennies! |
No, never bought one..seems like they are always about 50% more than I can buy myself.
I bought a quilt, but I did not like the pattern, just the fabric. The quilt did not look much like the pattern, but it was very cute anyway.
Never bought one, never will. I like to pick my own fabrics and designs and do the cutting myself, so I don't buy pre-cuts either. That said, I have seen some very pretty quilt kits, and if the price were right...
I like kits.buy them often for all your reasons. also love when they are on sale

I don't buy kits that are not on sale. As I've stated - I love to use them, but they have to be cheaper than I could do myself. I've had trouble with only one website which substituted fabrics to the point where the quilt did not resemble what I had ordered at all.
A friend and I have each bought the same kit from our LQS. Our quilts did not look the same because of the choices we made as we constructed the quilt. I don't think I've ever had a quilt that dictated which fabric went where - just coordinated fabrics that you used to follow the pattern - but in the way you chose. |
When traveling, I love to buy kits! On a recent trip to the Oregon coast, I bought 3 kits, each put together by the local shop owner. Since each of these kits came from small LQS's in Oregon, I'll never see them here in Northern California AND when checking the price of fabric, sometimes buying a kit is the cheapest way to go. In my opinion, using a kit is no different that using a mass-produced pattern or following a pattern in a quilt magazine.
I've never purchased a mass-produced kit, but I do love those put together by quilt shops. |
I can't stand making other people's ideas or accuracy of cutting.I have my own imagination to work with. Therefore, I never buy kits.
