To continue my threads demonstrating my insanity (see "do you see faces in fabric?"), I was wondering if the fabric or finished projects ever tell you where they want to go?
I was working on a tablerunner UFO. I started it a few years ago, and was finishing it for my Feb UFO. I had no idea who it would be for and then out of the blue, I knew it was going to my boss at work and his wife. Well, specifically, I thought of his wife. And to me it feels like the tablerunner was saying that's where it wanted to go. I've had that happen with a few quilts where I've liked the pattern and fabric, been working on them with no recipient in mind, and then -bam- I know where it's going, and it turns out it's their favorite color palette. So does that happen to any of you? Or am I really just that crazy? |
I had some fabric scream at me to buy it last summer in an LQS. Does that count? (I totally listened and obeyed!)
|
I had fabric talk to me this week.
I was pulling fabric for a quilt from my stash. I had originally intended to use one fabric but another fabric just screamed at me from the drawer "USE ME!" so I am. Cindy Carter |
Definately! If I'm not sure what fabric(s) to use, I just lay them out together and let them fight over who gets to be in the quilt. Keeps them from yelling at me later.
|
Oh yes! My fabric also tells me what pattern it wants to be in too (most of the time anyway).

I recently had to back out of a swap and when I moved those blocks that were already finished, they told me what they wanted to be and where they wanted to go when finished.
|
Oh yes. So nice to know I am not the only person who hears it.

Everytime I go to my LQS, this happens. They are ALL screaming for me to take them home. I thought I was crazy!   |
Shhhhhhhh.......it's the room down the hall to the left......shhhhhhhhhhh.......quick before someone sees you!
LOL....Just kidding, fabric talks to me all the time....especially Asian fabric......most of the time I don't know what it is saying but kanichiwa is good enough..LOL! |
They sure do! And they even talk to each other! Sometimes they play nice together & sometimes I have to separate them. ;-)
|
I bought this set of fat quarters, I really loved. I started making a turning twenty quilt for myself. About halfway through it I started "hearing" it tell me that my daughter Kelli needed it. Well, I finished it and my dh's first comment was, "Did you make that for Kelli?" Needless to say, Kelli has it and really loves it.
|
If your fabric didn't talk to you then you probably wouldn't buy it. I had a box of scraps that told me to send them to someone else so they could be used. So little by little they are being shipped out as I have the money to send them.
|
I'm going fabric shopping tonight and hoping some of them yell at me! I"m a little too good at ignoring the voices. Need to loosen the purse string!
|
It certainly talks to me.
As soon as it hits the store where I work there are two sometimes three or four of us fighting over the same fabric (we share). If only one of us is working at the time, we know what the other likes and it tells us to save it for her until she comes in for work. I also have fabric I bought (because it told me to) but it hasn't told me what it wants to be yet. I keep checking but it says "not yet". It's always best to listen when fabric talks to you. |
I thought the little voices were only talking to me.
|
On of the best compliments I have ever received came from my Uncle and Aunt when I sent them the finished project - made from fabric that screamed at me to use it for them.
|
Yarn also talks to me. I heard navy and cream talk to me once to crochet a granny square afghan. Had no clue as to why as those colors were nowhere in my house or any house that I knew of. Until it was time for our pastor and his wife's anniversary --- their LR was navy and cream! And by that time the afghan was done just waiting for a home.
|
You're not crazy! It happens to me all the time. The bolts jump off the wall and scream "pick me"! At least, that's the excuse I give when I get home with my selections! LOL
|
Fabric talks to me also! Didn't want to say anything. Didn't want people to think I was nuts!
But more than anything the quilt talks to me as I am piecing it. Sometimes I have a quilt I am making for someone in mind but another person pops in my head that the quilt should go to. If I go with the flow things go really smooth. If not I end up taking apart blocks like crazy. I have a quilt now that I don't know where it should go. It has no home as of yet! I guess it wants to stay with me! :D   |

Yes, fabric talks to me, too. Sometimes, it screams really loud! I have had quilt tops talk to me as well. They tell me to get a certain fabric out of there or how they need to be quilted. I am so glad that I am not alone.

I also hear them speak , and I have made Quilts a many a time for one person and then to have it go to a person I had no ideal
when starting it that it would end up with, so yes I think they choose who they go to . |
You betcha. Once I was going to buy fabric for a quilt class. We didn't know what the quilt was going to look like, only that we needed to bring a light, a medium and a dark fabric. My plan the whole time was to bring a deep blue, medium green and lighter purple (my favorite colors). When I was at the store, for some reason, a bright yellow kept saying 'make me the light one', so I did. Turns out my deep blue, medium green and light yellow were the same colors the instructor had used in her demo quilt! And I loved the way mine turned out.

If it's large floral or Thimbleberries fabric I can hear it calling me. I took my DGD to the fabric store with me. Next thing I knew I was hearing "Grandma, grandma, come here." She was standing by a beautiful bolt of red floral fabric. She said "Grandma this fabric says it wants to come home with you." See, even she can hear it. Of course I took it home. While we were there some called to her too. It went home with us too.

Yes, but some are louder than others. When I am getting ready to chose something for a new project, some do not say anything at all, and go back in the box. Others will say "I had better be the focal point, or else!"

Sorry couldnt resist!  I usually make up my mind I am going to make a quilt for so and so and then start looking at patterns to see what fits the recipient. Billy |

Are you kidding? My fabric hollers to me from my sewing room!
"Hey, come in here and make something out of us, we want to go out in the world and let people see us! I'll be on one project and a fabric will not let me be until I start making something with it, and then it calms down. (must be why I have so many UFO's, ya think?) |
Well a couple weeks ago, on my cleaning up phase, I moved the fabric out of bins from the dining room and onto shelves in the bedroom. Mistake or not, but they are screaming at me more and more! I am looking at them now and they keep saying, get off your b*** and make something!
|
Your question and the answers have brightened my day. I usually say "I'm not feeling it" but when it calls out to me (and it does very loudly) I never waiver in my choices. Sometimes I think I hear someone else's fabric calling me!

******** Is this quilt made of 20 pieces or is actually the name? May I see the photo of it? Thanks, JOY |
You bet! I go through that everytime I see the types of fabric I see. I love cobalt blue and sapphire blue colors.
|
Not only do they call to me when I'm shopping...sometimes they leap off the shelf and into my buggy. To put them back would hurt their feelings, and that would just be rude...so I keep them and love them-and EVENTUALLY, I use them!
|
Thank the dear Lord, I'm not the only one. At my age, my family would start to suspect I've flipped.
|
They sure do talk all the time.
|
This topic is another reason that I so like this board! I remember once that a quilt teacher suggested we lay out our fabrics for the quilt we were planning and let them talk to us. The same holds true for the quilt itself, especially when you are planning the borders. Put the quilt or the blocks on your design wall to audition the fabrics you will use. Sometimes the fabric you purchased is not the one you use. There's another fabric from your stash that is calling out to you. LOL
