All of the quilts I have made are machine pieced and hand quilted except for the Linus quilts I make. I machine quilt them because I expect them to be washed to death. The bed size quilts that are being used though out my home, are all hand quilted. The only time there is a problem is when our cat snags an occasional quilting stitch on our bed quilt.

Lots depends on how small the stitches are either machine or hand pieced.

I purchased a quilt 25 years ago in Amish country in Ontario Canada. The quilt, a Dresden Plate, has been washed many, many times and is still in wonderful condition today. I don't believe it is 100% cotton though - maybe cotton poly. However, many hours must have gone into the construction as it is entirely hand quilted with prairie point borders. I think with the beautiful cotton fabrics we can get today that with reasonable care well hand quilted quilts should last for decades. jmo.

I bought a quilt from my grandmother's aunt that she hand pieced. Not a perfect piece being a Bethlehem Star but I treasure the quilt. A great Aunt quilting bee hand quilted it. It is still in excellent condition except the binding fabric is fraying. It appears that she did a single fold binding.

I guess machine quilted and pieced last longer but nothing feels more comforting than a hand quilted quilt...they are so much softer and cozier. My DGS is an ardent Bull's fan and I made him a Bull's quilt and had it machine quilted. He loves it and loves how it looks but complained it isn't soft.
