Do these match or clash?

I want to make a table running using patriotic fabrics and English paper piecing. Some fabric is more "muted"/Americana looking and some is brighter and more vibrant colors. Can I mix them or would that make the muted look dull? Not sure if this pic will show you what I'm talking about or not.

charsuewilson 05-31-2013 09:18 AM

I think they look great together.

I love the postage stamp fabric

Dina 05-31-2013 09:18 AM

I am no expert, but I think they look good together.

Dina

I would keep the muted ones separate from the brighter ones -
but that's just my preference.

I like the three hexagons that you have together -

I think the muted ones look washed out and 'old/used' with the brighter prints.

MadQuilter 05-31-2013 09:20 AM

I think the muted ones tone down the brightness. If you like that then keep them in. If you want to keep the brightness level high then do as bear suggested, and take them out.

dunster 05-31-2013 09:31 AM

My first quilt had this "problem" of bright and dull fabrics, and I didn't finish it for years because of that. When I finally finished it, I loved it! http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t174293.html

Sewfine 05-31-2013 09:46 AM

No, they look good.

meyert 05-31-2013 10:28 AM

I think they look great! My son was born on the 4th of July I should make him a quilt like this and dunsters... awesome idea

eparys 05-31-2013 11:08 AM

Yup - looks good to me! I would go with it!

Peckish 05-31-2013 11:20 AM

I think the little bit of bright white will add sparkle to the rest of the quilt. I vote for keeping all the fabrics in.

QuiltingHaven 05-31-2013 11:24 AM

I like your choices. Where did you get the postage stamp material in the background. That is beautiful.

I have no idea when or where I got the postage stamp fabric! haha. Joanns, perhaps.

ube quilting 05-31-2013 12:34 PM

I like them all except the one on the far right. It seems to be very primary where the others are nice tones, IMHO.
peace

mom-6 05-31-2013 12:52 PM

I like them all!
Once you get more of the hexes finished you can play around with placement and see what looks good to you. I'm thinking you could randomize the brights and muted ones for a really nice design.

sengell 05-31-2013 01:01 PM

I vote to use all the fabrics. I think they look great together!

JJean 05-31-2013 01:19 PM

In the past I'd say that it's okay to mix everything. But lately I have noted that there is a big movement to keep "clear colors" or bright separate. There are no quilting police--so it's up to you.

QuiltnNan 05-31-2013 02:48 PM

i think it depends how many you are using. if you have plenty of each, i think they will blend. just a couple muted ones, though, will look washed out.

knabino 05-31-2013 04:11 PM

I think they are all nice but I like the muted ones much more than the bright. If it were me, I would leave the bright one out

nygal 05-31-2013 04:14 PM

They look great!!

redquilter 05-31-2013 04:48 PM

As I was reading I thought my answer would be to keep them separate. After seeing the picture, I've changed my mind. I think they look nice together.

nannyrick 05-31-2013 04:50 PM

I think they would all look great together. Nice fabric.

bizzibee 05-31-2013 04:51 PM

I think they look very nice together. The muted ones add interest and will give your finished piece more dimension. Go for it!

Janice McC 05-31-2013 05:13 PM

I believe they neither match nor clash, however they do coordinate.

paoberle 06-01-2013 03:29 AM

I don't like the mixture.

mjhaess 06-01-2013 03:36 AM

Great combo....

tweety2 06-01-2013 04:04 AM

They look great together. Go for it!

Another option is to dip, and I mean 'quick dip,' your bright fabrics in a strong tea solution to 'antique' them. That's worked for me several times.

nabobw 06-01-2013 04:55 AM

all look good together

twinkie 06-01-2013 04:59 AM

I would say for you to use the fabrics that you want in the runner. I see no problem with mixing dull with bright.

localgirl1 06-01-2013 05:25 AM

looks great together to meeeee.

tessagin 06-01-2013 05:31 AM

I've always thought that there's a reason for mutes and brights and never thought they go together. It's just when you put the 2 together the mutes make the quilt look stained or soiled in some areas like coffee or tea may have spilled. love all of it, just not together.

cpcarolyn 06-01-2013 05:51 AM

They look great to me.

elizajo 06-01-2013 05:53 AM

I think that if you have an equal balance of muted to bright it looks purposeful and good. It would look better to me with more prints from different lines of fabrics with slightly different hues, like it is a controlled color scrappy. I made a red, white, and blue quilt with at least 50 different fabrics quite a few years ago. It has dull to bright blues and reds. I used whites and off-white backgrounds in the prints. It is my bed quilt and is almost threadbare in places because it has been used and washed so much. If I were to remake it today, I would add even more variety in the lights using recycled men's shirts because I love plaids so much.

Annaquilts 06-01-2013 05:59 AM

Yes this!

Make it and if you do not like the brights popping tea dye it. It will give it a primitive look and feel. I like that. Now if you do not like that be sure not to put the dull ones in.

Yep, I would agree. If you are mixing them up fairly equally it will give it a scrappy look (which I love).

sewnsewer2 06-01-2013 06:31 AM

Looks good to me except for the blue striped, it kinda looks dirty with the other fabrics.

Rebecca_S 06-01-2013 07:04 AM

I think that it looks better to mix the bright and the dull. I would just make sure that both are sprinkled evenly around, you don't want to end up with a duller half and a brighter half.

Muddles 06-01-2013 07:18 AM

I think they look fine. If you like it, of course, that's what matters most.

jbj137 06-01-2013 07:32 AM

They look GREAT together.
