I didn't use to use my scraps at all until I realized just how much yardage I was tossing away.

Yes, I use them to make lap quilts for the shut ins from our church. Now I am using them to make lap quilts for the womens shelter in my city. Great way to use them up and benefit others.

On one of the earlier quilts I made I did the math and figured out the yardage difference between two different methods of flying geese. The difference was a full yard. That yard would have been reduced to waste triangles. I made sure after I figured the difference for that quilt that I don't use any "waste" methods for big quilts any more.

Everyone should learn how to do quilt math. It's really not all that hard if you use a calculator.

I had a large tub of scraps that I rescued after a friend and neighbor died. My husband threatened to throw them out, and I told him that I'd condense them. I've spent the past several day s ironing and cutting. I now have smaller tubs of squares ready to be turned into quilts. I have 2 1/2 in. squares, 3 1/2 in. squares, 4 1/2 in. squares, and a few 6 1/2 squares. I even have a small tub of 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. rectangles with the corresponding 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 in pieces to make what my neighbor calls brick wall. Since the pieces don't seem to be the right proportion for bricks, I call them planks.

Such a beautiful quilt. I picked up on the way you used a block of your strip pieces to pull the blocks together. If this is common I have not gotten to that chapter in my learning experience yet. I didn't know how to pull them all together. You have helped me immensely. This information is going in my notepad. Thanks again.

There is also a free video web site.

They dont have near as many videos but it is free.

Thanks Rose Marie. I put quilters TV in my favorite places in case I ever have enough time away from quiltingboard and my sewing machine to watch some of their videos.

The nice thing about using 2.5" squares/strips is: The finished size is 2", so it is easy to do the math to figure out how big a pattern will be.
I have done a lot of the quilts that are the technique where you sew across the diagonal of small squares to create flying geese or snowballs, or whatever.
I absolutely take the time to move the block over .5" and make the second line so I can cut down the middle, have the block I am actually wanting, and a teeny, tiny little HST as a scrap.
You can do a lot with a HST, even if it is less than an inch ... if nothing else, people will wonder about you <g> <wave>

I love scraps and actually buy scraps! Iwill buy any that any one here wants to part with as I am sure others will too.

I use mine. I mostly make scrappy quilts and any pieces that are left over I cut into squares.

morelcabin 11-28-2010 06:36 PM

I use them right down to nothing with all the appliques i do

RST 11-28-2010 06:49 PM

I do. Look at my avatar quilt -- all scraps. I've made several in that style, as well as pillows, table runners, hotpads -- all with the scrappy color strips. Very fast and easy, but kinda cool and graphic.

I use my scraps on almost every quilt. I love string quilts and appliq. My last 3 quilts were all made out of scraps and everyone loves them.

When I started quilting, I knew not to throw my scraps away since I would make scrap quilts "some day". Fast forward 4 or so years later, and I had only opened the scrap bin a few times and then to only get a piece or 2. Now that the scraps are overflowing from the bin, I'm going to try to do something with them... and it got me thinking, I'm sure I'm not the only one who collects scraps but doesn't actually do anything with them... right??

I leave all scraps as they are. Never know what I might need. I've used 2" by 36" scraps before. So it all goes into a bin--by color if I take the time. Except all holiday stuff goes in one biN. And there it was ready for me when someone posted the stocking mug rug on here. THANK YOU AGAIN!

I'm always amazed that so many quilters don't do math. It's the way I think. I have to zip my lip at some of the questions here, since the answers are so simple to me. But if a quilter doesn't think in math, I could spend the rest of my life trying to explain.

neat use of scraps.

lana17 11-28-2010 07:16 PM

Be careful with those scraps. They are like loaves and fishes!
If they get too out of hand, just donate to a church group who will use them. You can start over....and they do return!

I know what you're saying!! It's basic math, there's nothing hard about it. I have a calculator on my desk so I can do the math fast and easy and it prints out so I can keep track of my math for a quilt.

All my quilts are scrappy ones. The only fabric I buy from a fabric store is for backing. I even piece together left over pieces of batting to make a quilt size piece, or I do the "Fun & Done" thing and only have to make a piece of batting as large as one quilt block.

Riversong 11-28-2010 07:32 PM

I use my scraps. Always have,as often thats all I had to start with..but I love scrappy things!

smitty 11-28-2010 07:38 PM

I have reached the end of today's posts on scrappy--all 13 pages. please don't post any more--I need to get off here.but I did not want to miss one single suggestion, etc.
I used to just throw scraps in a tub. too much mess when I finally decided to use them or they overflowed ! now, I cut scraps into what usable sizes I want to use and place in boxes marked for that size. takes a lot less room, you do your cutting after each couple of projects. I now cut off 1 1/2" STRIPS from almost every fabric I buy. this goes in the log-cabin or string box.
I gifted two boxes of cut scraps to quilting buddies & still have more than I will probably ever use. so fun to be able to do that.
leaders & enders--hurray !

darlin121 11-28-2010 07:45 PM

I save the selvedges to make a quilt one day. All other scraps go to my daughter who is a Bonnie Hunter fan and cuts up every scrap into usable strips and squares then makes quilts with them.

I think that "by color" and "holiday" is a tip I have missed. I have spent HOURS cutting fabric into pieces and strips (which satisfies my obsessive/compulsive thing), and when push comes to shove - - well, you know the story - - I have to handle all sorts of bins, and pieces of fabric and pretty soon I am deciding:
My time is valuable. At this point it is cheaper to just go buy fabric or forget the project!
I am THRILLED that this thread got revived, and to learn something to new and find others excited about "scrappy" is so FUN! FUN! FUN! <wave>
I know someone wanted us to stop, but I CAN"T! LOL

lavenderfire 11-29-2010 03:08 PM

I do. Last weekend i seperated my squares and strips and put into individual bags. Found enough to make a quilt. Added different fabric to the base square. I used to make just this or that nothing fancy, but since reading and looking at some of the beautiful quilts I have learned to make a real quilt. Thank you ladies for this board. Read it every day.

maryb119 11-29-2010 03:27 PM

I use mine for applique and they are great for string piecing. I have a bag full of 3 1/2 inch squares ready for a project.

bakermom 11-29-2010 05:46 PM

I separate mine into "flannel" and "cotton". I've been able to make several baby quilts this past summer just from my scraps.
