I'm working on cutting up my scraps into usable pieces (different thread) and it got me wondering - how many of you actually use your scraps on a regular basis?
When I started quilting, I knew not to throw my scraps away since I would make scrap quilts "some day". Fast forward 4 or so years later, and I had only opened the scrap bin a few times and then to only get a piece or 2. Now that the scraps are overflowing from the bin, I'm going to try to do something with them... and it got me thinking, I'm sure I'm not the only one who collects scraps but doesn't actually do anything with them... right?? |
Well I haven't used mine yet lol- They are all thrown together. It's on the one day list.
|
I am starting to use mine. I am working on a paper pieced quilt now and trying to use up the smaller pieces when I can. So far, it's going well and I can see doing this again in the future. It's the only way I'd work with such small pieces.
|
I am getting more motivated to use some up. Partly with the swaps going on here, as well as a project my gf is working on. She has been off work for a week...sick. And still managed to put together about 3/4 of a quilt top!!!! all from scraps.

I use my scraps for log cabin quilts, courthouse steps or split rail! Great for table runners, or placemats or lap quilts!
|
I use mine. Not alot but I find myself going through my scrap bin for my wallhangers or tablerunners. Alot of times I just need a little peice of green for a leaf or a purple for a flower that I applique. There are probably alot of them in my bin that I would never use but as soon as I got rid of them I would find a use for them. Hang on to them you never know what your projects in the future will require. :D

I use scraps more than anything. I actually buy other peoples scraps.

Last year my daughter came home from college for Christmas, and while driving the 3 hour drive, she mentioned she wanted to make a quilt for the boyfriend with a wolf panel in the center and whatever around it. She just didn't tell me right away that he was going to visit us for New Year and we only had one and a half week to put together a full size quilt. I had the panel, she went through the already cut scraps to select only masculin patterns and colors, and yada, tada, yada, I finished binding the quilt the same day he arrived. If those scraps were not already cut and ready to go, we would not have finished on time.
Since them I have made two "emergency" quilts, if that qualifies as an emergency, one with half square triangles made form the squares already there and one with full squares. Maria |
I use my scraps. I look at the larger pieces every time I start a quilt. I made this quilt all from scraps, front and back. Since I like log cabin quilts, I concentrate on saving strips.

I don't use them a lot, but I actually just made a pumpkin shaped and "christmas " tree shaped pot holder with my scraps over the weekend! I was proud that I used some because I have so many. I also try and use them for small things like bookmarks, coasters and eyeglass cases. Also use them for Applique.
|
I use mine. :D
Scrap quilts are my favorite. They have such a warm & homey look. I'd gladly buy anyone's scraps who wanted to sell them. :D  Just pm me....SERIOUSLY!! :D |
yes--I use my scraps..for applique..many scrap quilts and I just used a bunch making a donation item..which was a tablerunner, 4 placemats and 4 napkins and a bag. I am trying to empty my scrap bin so I can start all over so the scraps have been flying around here lately!
|
I use mine. I make a scrappy quilt for the granddaughters and great nieces that's a square in a square with black sashing. I only have to buy the black fabric. The other fabrics all come from the scrap bin.
I'm also working on a series of small monthly wall hangings. I might pull a fat quarter for the background but the rest almost always comes from the scrap bins. I have made two full size log cabin quilts and two twin size string quilts all from the scrap bins. And yet the scrap bins are still crammed full!! |
Lucy.....
don't tell a soul..... BUT I AM ADDICTED TO SCRAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

How do you all wind up with scraps that are big enough to make quilts out of anyway? I can understand bookmarks, coasters, and small items like that, but full sized quilt blocks? How big are the scraps you use? |
Ghostrider, Appliques, do you do any applique work? Well don't through your scraps away get Ms Graces address and send your scraps to her.
Fabric is to expensive to through any of it away. |
uummm...maybe crazy quilts or charm quilts.

I have a bunch of triangles left over from the last project. You know, where you sew a little square to a big square on the corner and then cut diagonally? So while those triangles are stuck together, I sewed them together. Now I got a Bunch of squares ready to go with the strips that were leftover. Since it is Connecting threads fabric, I think I'll dig out the other scraps from kits of theirs I have done and sew those traingles together. Scrappy happy!

I use mine and not just to make a scrappy quilt.

 WOW! That's beautiful!! :D What pattern did you use? |
I *live* for scraps! Like was mentioned, I buy scraps. In fact, a scrap bin is the first place I look for in a quilt shop. Sadly, only two here have them. Only occassionally have I hit the jackpot with those, but I still look when I get to them.
I've bought from online too. Again it's hit or miss. I'm always, always looking, so if anyone feels there's are getting out of hand I'm more than willing to make a deal with ya'! |

Scraps did someone say scraps..........
Scrap quilts are my all time favorite quilts to do. I have done several......... If there is anyone out there who doesn't want their scraps....... I will gladly take them. Here are a couple of scrap quilts I have done. Thus the name Scrap Quilter |
I use mine. I do scrappy quilts with them when it's time to do some serious scrap busting. I look at them as free quilts, it just takes a little time to get them organized and cut to what you need. :)
Working on one right now from the scrap bin and I'll have a queen size quilt when I'm done without having to spend any additional money. :) |
Yes I have do. when I get a little time I will pull scraps out of the pile, just a few, that are a similiar length and sew them together to start making rows. I thought about pre cutting to various shapes but that would just be more work! for some people this works and is a great time saver in the future if pieces are needed quick but I am notto that point yet. one of my doll quilts was scraps that I had been hand sewing together. I guess it just depends on how far you want to go with them. I just keep sewing them together. Good luck , hope this helps. :D

Applique, applique, applique! I try to cut some useable squares first but I save ALL of it. Yes, it's an addiction.

Thank you all for sharing. I really appreciate your ideas and suggestions. I never thought of a scrappy log cabin, though I have no idea why since I've seen them before!
I might do something with triangles... I hardly ever work with triangles (and I'm probably going to remember why when I start working on it :D) |
I use mine! All year I have been doing monthly calendar quilts using scraps. It is from a book from Scraps of Time. Then I used up most of my strips in a string block quilt. I am making more of those now as I get more strips in the scraps. I have cut up a bunch of scraps into squares and as soon as I have enough, will make a D9patch quilt. I don't throw much out. My avatar is and example of HSTs I made from scraps. It is a great quilt.

Of course! But not as much as I could, because they are growing!

Scrap Quilter, your quilts are beautiful.
I use my scraps quite often for string quilts, or string pillows, applique, paper piecing. The backs of quilts and to try out new blocks or new embroidery. I let my students use my scraps for their projects. Love my scraps. |
I use scraps. The fish quilt I made my younger son is almost entirely of scraps. In fact, I'll gladly take scrap donations from anyone who doesn't want theirs. :)

What pattern did you use? I can't recall what magazine that pattern was in but it is super easy: Take two same-size rectangles (one dark one light) and sew them together with a mitered seam. For the first row, alternate dark and light. For the next row, alternate light and dark. |
I've made 2 queen size disappearing 9 patch quilts and just finished a queen size string quilt with scraps. Have enough strips cut to do at least one more string or log cabin, and still have scraps!! They do reproduce in the dark.
