Steam and Best Press

laalaaquilter 09-02-2011 04:22 AM

Steam usually, dry for paper-piecing.

jitkaau 09-02-2011 04:31 AM

I use both, depending on the job.

Chay 09-02-2011 04:39 AM

The Continental dry iron - Home Depot online. Love it. It's heavy, hot and doesn't have automatic shut-off. None of those annoying holes in the plate for fabric to get caught in. Highly recommend!

DITTO.....

if I feel the wrinkles are more than spritzing can fix, I spray with water put in a plastic bag and place in the fridge over night...this will swell the threads and remove the wrinkles!

yet one of the first things they teach you in beginners class is NEVER steam...at least NOT your blocks...it distorts them!

Dry- and I think Mary Ellen's Best Press is the best stuff around! Never heard of it until I I joined the board.
Totally worth the money.

Thanks for this tip. I need a spray bottle for water in my sewing room. Off to Walmart after work.

Just use an empty, pump hair spray bottle. Gives a nice fine spray and you don't have to buy something.

shirley35 09-02-2011 05:02 AM

Dry iron with spray sometimes.

gmaybee 09-02-2011 05:03 AM

Steam, but I press not iron.

Blackberry 09-02-2011 05:06 AM

I do the same thing. I hate in when the iron spews out a stream of water and steam.

Morningcoffeegal 09-02-2011 05:06 AM

lol I use both at times, I also use a light starch especially on all the washed fabric to give it stability, even have used a damp pressing cloth. Sometimes you just get that one stubborn wrinkle that doesn't want to go away! LOL

krisgray 09-02-2011 05:07 AM

I've had to many log cabins get stretched by steam irons while at retreats, etc. Tricky pressing those blocks with steam. So, my rule is no water in my iron unless I'm ironing a recently washed large piece of yard goods before cutting.

GrannyEm 09-02-2011 05:09 AM

Im a steamer too and I use spray sometimes

shirley35 09-02-2011 05:14 AM

Dry iron with spray sometimes.

cctx. 09-02-2011 05:16 AM

Both, and depends on how wrinkled the fabric is.

quilted dakota 09-02-2011 05:17 AM

darn, i gave the kids my iron several years ago. . .now i guess ill have to go buy another! and an ironing board, sigh

emsgranny 09-02-2011 05:19 AM

I use steam but after seeing this it might be better with dry iron and spray bottle

Iamquilter 09-02-2011 05:25 AM

Always a dry iron and water bottle near by.

Val in IN 09-02-2011 05:39 AM

Dry iron. If I need more oomph, I spritz with water, if I need MORE oomph, I use homemade Best Press.

kittycats 09-02-2011 05:48 AM

I use a dry iron and spray bottle. I have one with water and one with starch

I used an old 409 cleaner bottle. I cleaned it out well. I decided to try this because I knew I wouldn't have to worry about DH taking my spray bottle.

Dry with Magic Sizing.
:)

mrsmail 09-02-2011 05:53 AM

I use steam.

QuiltNama 09-02-2011 05:57 AM

Dry and spritz while making blocks, steam after all is complete.

grumpy90650 09-02-2011 06:00 AM

steam...always....

hoppa 09-02-2011 06:17 AM

dry iron most of the time and use best press or starch when needed

MoMoSews 09-02-2011 06:21 AM

Steam baby steam!!

domo 09-02-2011 06:45 AM

For years I have used a steam iron, (Rowenta). Then residue started to build up inside and it started spitting out chunks so I quit using the steam and just started using it dry. If I needed to press out some stubborn wrinkles I would spritz it with water. I keep a spray bottle handy. Then I read on this QB that a lot of quilters use spray starch. I have a bottle of Best Press that I have had for a long time, but didn't really know what to do with. So, now I have been using that when I press my seams and it works like a charm. Thank you, QB, I learn so much on this site. I don't post a lot, but I do read it every day.

This is the same way I do it. Can't stand a leaky iron so the spray bottle works great!

mjsylvstr 09-02-2011 07:05 AM

I use both........

Bren 09-02-2011 07:14 AM

Dry iron and Mary Ellen's.

cattailsquilts 09-02-2011 07:14 AM

I always dry iron while piecing my blocks, then spritz the finished blocks and finished tops with water from a spray bottle then press again. I don't put water in my irons if I can avoid it. Drives my hubby batty! (He presses his own clothes)

Never used starch, but considering trying it on my next finished top before loading it into my frame.

I remember damping all our ironing as a kid. The coke bottle with a perforated top.. Guess that ages me!!

EagarBeez 09-02-2011 07:35 AM

I had been using steam, but, after reading many posts on this subject, I went to dry iron with a squirt bottle of water

janjj 09-02-2011 07:48 AM

Been using steam but after reading all your comments I may go back to dry and a spray bottle . I bought a Niagara Non-aerosol spray starch and do not like it as it leaves lots of 'stuff' on my cloth. Thanks for all the neat info you gals post.

Kath12 09-02-2011 08:09 AM

Steam

I found that steam will miss shape your quilt pieces. the dry iron ,with starch or light spray works much better.
the starch I like better than water.

Aquarius 09-02-2011 08:15 AM

I use a dry iron but use a sprintzer bottle of water if necessary

Macie 09-02-2011 08:34 AM

You are not so odd I also use starch
