I've been working hard (in spare moments) to make enough crumb blocks to make a quilt for our queen sized bed.... I do like most of the fabric.... a few pieces, not so much.... plus I couldn't stop myself from trying to "hide" some of ds's favorite things like a lightning mcqueen car and various animals, etc. But now I'm afraid that after all of this work I might wind up not really loving it. I don't know - like maybe it will be too busy even though I intend on sashing to "calm" it down....

What about you?

sandpat 02-06-2010 04:30 PM

Ummmm.....yes. Sometimes I think I am gonna like a certain combination and then it gets done...and not so much. Guess where those go???? You got it....charity quilts! Someone will love it, is just most certainly ain't me

craftybear 02-06-2010 04:33 PM

Hi,

Please post a picture of your quilt. Thanks

patricej 02-06-2010 04:35 PM

i've made several quilts that thrilled me not.

somebody has loved every one of them.

DON'T worry about it. sometimes a quilt really doesn't come together until it's put together.

DITTO!

Funny you should mention this. This evening I went into the closet and pulled out a UFO from more years ago that I care to mention. This top was started for my daughter (she had given me input on pattern and fabric) but after she went away to school and moved into her own home I lost interest in this project and stashed it away. Well it is now back out and I still don't like it (blues and yellows, just not my favourites) and actually I am pretty sure it is no longer to my daughter's taste either. Oh well, I will trudge on with it and maybe as Sandpat suggests it will become a donation to some cause.

dkabasketlady 02-06-2010 05:52 PM

I've got several UFO's in the closet and just can't seem to do anything about it. I even went so far as to get one of them out yesterday and looked at it and put it back in the closet today. Maybe another day, yeah right!!

Gramof6 02-06-2010 06:06 PM

Oh yes! I have one in the closet that needs to be finished hand quilted from back in '98 or '99. I dislike it so much I cannot stand to look at it to complete the thing. One day it will get done. Not saying I will be the one to do it, but it will get done! LOL

Pat and pups 02-06-2010 06:08 PM

My tastes seem to change after I finish it. I have one on my bed right now that I don't like very much, but then I don't mind if dogs get on it. If I loved it, I'd have to keep them off the bed. They must think it's beautiful since they jump on the bed quite often.

maryb119 02-06-2010 06:29 PM

I think that happens to all of us sooner or later but I have a large family and somebody usually likes it.

roselady 02-06-2010 07:27 PM

Yes, unfortunatly, I have made at least one quilt that I don't like too much. One I am thinking about is a grandmothers flower garden. It is about 3' by 4' right now. I started it back in the 80's when the fabric selection was nothing like what it is now, and my color sense was a little imature, so now, I don't want to finish it, but I sewed all those little hex's by hand and I don't want to just leave it either. My daughter who just got married 6 months ago asked me about it, that she would love to have it, because she remembers me working on it (she called it the stop sign quilt). I have designed the finished quilt to be very different than what it was supposed to have been. I will finish a few more rows of hex's then add some cute borders to make it a medallion type quilt. The lesson here is finish your quilts while you still like them, before they go out of style or before your tastes change too much.

Jingle 02-06-2010 07:53 PM

I have had only one but, it really isn't all that bad, I end up thinking they are all pretty when they are finished, I will save it for someone special, who is yet to come along.

I'm so glad you said this! My son jumps on our bed all the time - so it would be good if I wasn't 100% thrilled with it then!

littlehud 02-06-2010 08:33 PM

I have a few quilts I have hated after finishing and they are all loved by the recipients. That works for me. My DD has one I call the quilt from he**. It's one of her favorites. Go figure.

Loretta 02-06-2010 09:11 PM

Several.

jljack 02-06-2010 09:20 PM

Yes, I made my very first attempt at a bargello. It's very small, and it's pink, cream and green. I named it "pickles and ice cream", but I don't like how it came out. It hangs on my quilt rack and doesn't get used. Other than that 1, I think there is 1 or 2 that I have given away that I ended up not liking so much.

I really like that lesson :-D

b.zang 02-06-2010 09:34 PM

Usually, it's because I'm not happy with something I've done.

I had the opposite happen, too. I had fabric I didn't like at all, and sewed it together into a quilt that turned out pretty nice in the end. Quite a surprise for me!

Here is one I made for my mom, see pics

This was going to be the front, but I was not happy with it so........

I made this for it which became the front and put the other on as the back which made it reversable.

sandpat 02-07-2010 06:08 AM

Great idea Kimberly! I like both sides of that one!

grammyp 02-07-2010 06:22 AM

Oh yes, and sometimes once they are quilted and washed I like them better. I usually make "test blocks" before I invest too much time and fabric. If I don't like the combination at that point I stop and have an orphan block. If I like the block and continue but then don't like the finished top it goes to charity unless someone expresses a interest in it. Then it becomes a lovely hand made gift.

Tippy 02-07-2010 07:05 AM

You bet!! My very first quilt.. there was Nothing wrong with it, it was a soft muted shades of turquoise.. we used to call them 'dusty' colors. and it was a grandmother's fan.. done on muslin. and it was a HUGE top queen sized spread. I finished the whole thing and couldn't STAND it. So ..... I sold it.. that was my first hand pieced top. I found out I really don't care for pastels or muted colors much. But I got my money back out of it and it was a great learning tool.

watterstide 02-07-2010 07:10 AM

not really..it may of not turned out a great as i would of liked it to..but i love it anyways!

My dogs are allowed on all my quilts, on the couches and the bed..I make them to use,not for looking at.And i don't mind washing them once a week! (nothing bigger than a twin size)

omak 02-07-2010 07:17 AM

I NEVER like any of the quilts I make ... I like looking at the pictures, and I really like the process and the techniques, but I am never really attached to any of my quilts.
It is one of the reasons I give so many away ... ALL of them away .. out of my house, away from my sight!
I don't like them because I know what is weak about them. I know where I made mistakes. I am constantly finding places that could have had a better color combination. I don't ever want to see any of the quilts I make EVER AGAIN!
However .... sometimes, I am forced to - - and, when I see one that I made years ago, or months ago (since I usually just do the quilt top and wait to quilt it) ... I am sooooo impressed!
They always look better than I remember them!
For example. I made a HUGE pineapple quilt for my son and DIL for their wedding. It was my typical, everything but the kitchen sink colors, thrown together. When I quilted it, I put waay too much stippling in it, and it is stiff .... I shipped it off to the kids, knowing they didn't know good from not so fine and breathed a sigh of relief, since I would never visit them, anyway. I would NEVER have to see it.
Four years passed and I happened to go visit while they were waiting for their second child to be born. When I walked into their house, there was this really impressive quilt on the wall, and so bright, so cheery ... I walked over to look at it and was checking out the quilting (I am SERIOUS! I didn't even recognize it!) .... I was just about ready to ask: Where did you get this quilt???? When, something about it caught my attention ... a strip of fabric that apparently I REALLY liked!
I stepped back, and looked at the WHOLE quilt, and by golly! I knew where they had got that great quilt! LOL and, it really looked great.
The other day ... DD and I were going through some quilt tops and she pulled out one and I asked: Where did that come from? (well, of course, from me - - silly old woman!) but, when did I do it? What had made me do it, and by golly! It actually looked like I knew what I was doing! even though I recognized blocks I had created some nine years ago, and whatever made me think to put four patches, nine patches, solid blocks, and big HST all together uniformly in a quilt? I knew when I folded it away, I hadn't like it, but here I was, seeing it years later, and being impressed ... senility? LOL Maybe ... but, I know what I think when I am done with one ... I DO NOT LIKE the quilts I make ... LOL <wave>

sandpat 02-07-2010 07:22 AM

Then omak....you can send yours to me..

tkhooper 02-07-2010 09:03 AM

Well I haven't made that many but I've loved them all because they have been made for loved ones and I've sewn love into every stitch. I just wish I had kept pictures.

But I have done other projects where the finished project has irritated me so much I've never wanted to see it again. Usually because I can't get it to come out like I've visualized it.

deranged_damsel 02-07-2010 09:04 AM

buy some fabric for the backing that you LOVE! it will help ;)

Sharon321 02-07-2010 10:25 AM

I have made two that were "seemed like a good idea at the time," One was a mystery quilt I did in a class. Hate it but had a great time with my friends. second was to be a baby quilt for friend. The fabric was so cute but when I pieced it, it was horrible. Also, we see our quilts up close, all the details, and know where we messed up. Back up and look at it from across the room, then it usually looks great. Third, if you hate a project, why do you want to spend any more time on it. Life is too short. Either think of it as a lesson on technique or color. Then take it to your guild meeting and offer it up for free to someone else. Or our guild has a trash for treasure sale, sell it there.

vjengels 02-07-2010 10:32 AM

Oh yeah,
I had a flannel quilt that I disliked so much, it was a huge chore to finish it! I couldn't give it away fast enough! Now I know that I don't have to finish it if I can't stand it any longer;I'll just give it away, good will, whatever... someone else will love it.
If I find that I don't love it so much when it's completely finished... I use it in a duvet cover. win win.

Barbm 02-07-2010 11:12 AM

I did one- I called it my ugly quilt. But I WAS going to finish it- back in the day when I refused to have UFOs. It was laid on the bed in the guest room. DIL saw it- asked who's it was, she loved it- I said its yours. And so it had a home.

She loves it and it looks so much better at her house than mine.

OmaForFour 02-07-2010 11:20 AM

Find an organization near you that you love. Set it up with them to have a raffle at an event in the near future. There has to be some people that will like the quilt and take a chance on it. Even if they don't want it for themselves, they might have a relative or good friend that they would want it for. They get it for the price of a ticket, your organization makes a good bit of money and you get to feel good about that quilt AND yourself!

JJean 02-07-2010 01:28 PM

There is a site online where you can donate to an UFO quilt orphanage. I believe folks finish your project any way they like and then donate it to charity. Check it out:

marta 02-09-2010 06:53 AM

Yes, I have had that happen a couple of times. The best way I have found to counteract that is to "put it away" for awhile when you feel you are "sick of it."
I have about 3 quilts going at one time, so that there is always something different to work on. It works for me!

bob1414 02-09-2010 07:06 AM

I'm working on one right now that I DO NOT LIKE. But......I'll finish it anyway - the fabric is all cut!

Dkm 02-09-2010 07:24 AM

Yes, made several of those, but I am a person that believes in finishing what I started. Then wait for someone to come along and say " I love that" and guess what it goes home with them. If this doesn't happen then a charity quilt it becomes. All quilts need love and someone will if only to be warm.

33 Valley Rd 02-09-2010 07:29 AM

I signed up for a stack and whack class. The instructor happened to be in the store at the time and told me to pick a focus fabric I didn't like because the kaleidoscope effect would totally change the fabric. Well, I have to disagree. I didn't like the fabric when I bought it and I still didn't like it in the quilt. If I'd read the book that goes with the class, the author recommends buying fabric you love. Anyway, it's the living room quilt now and if something gets spilled on it, it won't hurt so bad. But I've had a lot of people tell me they love it.

omak 02-09-2010 08:00 AM

I forget which renowned quilter mentioned this "fact", but basically:
If you cut up the fabric you don't like, and you STILL do not like it, you just haven't cut it up small enough!

It is pretty interesting to see what happens to a bunch of scantily clad hawaiin beauties when they are reduced to two inch blocks ;) <wave>

Oh MY!

I made a sample quilt to advertise a class at our LQS and hated the thing. It was "theoretically" a very good color design.

No, not one student signed up for the class either! :P
