I have an account. It is the only way I can find out how distance family members are doing. I am careful about what I post and I keep my info well hidden.

Diana Lynne 03-12-2011 04:54 PM

I do facebook but mainly its just to stay in touch with family members that do not live close to me..That I love to play some of the games that are on it..

Scissor Queen 03-12-2011 04:55 PM

I have FB and a twitter account. I have FB to keep up with my granddaughter, and my cousins and their kids and my husband's niece, nephew and their kids. If I didn't have FB I wouldn't hear from them nearly as often. I don't use the twitter much at all though.

goldsberry921 03-12-2011 04:58 PM

I don't do FB because my son passed away in 2009 and some of his paternal relatives were stealing pictures of my son so I decided to do away with FB and MySpace. Plus in my humble opinion it's just an accident waiting to happen. I still like my email/phone call/text way of communication. I too, spend lots of time on the Quilt forum, so I am where I need to be! :)!!

Kuusistoquilter 03-12-2011 04:59 PM

I have an account on FB. It is how I know what is happening with my kids, grandkids, neices and nephews since we are spread all over the country. It's an easy way to share pictures. I don't post much, but I check every couple of days to see what is happening.

slstitcher 03-12-2011 05:04 PM

I am on FB. I do it to see pics of the grandkids. I very rearely post anything though. I usually only look at it every week or so. I don't think these young kids know what privacy is the way they post everything they are doing and show pics of a lot of it.

Stitchnripper 03-12-2011 05:29 PM

I use Facebook on my phone. I don't normally check it at the computer. I am curious as to what is the difference between FB having your name, and some of the businesses, email providers, banks, etc. I don't think anyone should do it if it makes them uncomfortable. I am not Facebook friends with my grown children - but we are in close contact by phone/email/visit. I do get to keep in touch with some far away people and this does not preclude email, phone, etc. Just an addition.

Dolphyngyrl 03-12-2011 05:32 PM

I have it to communicate with family, and college friends that are out of state, thats all, but you do have to be careful what you say and post on there

Laura22 03-12-2011 05:39 PM

I love it, lots of family who live far away on there and it's a great way to keep up with a large family and friends in other states.

dellareya 03-12-2011 05:58 PM

The only reason I'm on facebook is to keep up with my children. They are all on it and share photos and such. It is a good way for me to see my grandchildren.

Ginger2010 03-12-2011 06:21 PM

I have a FB account just to keep up with my family and pictures from them. If you type https:\\facebook.com it becomes a security site. You have to have the(s) after http. I don't usually post anything either. I think it is stupid to let others know stupid stuff like that. I do post comments with the Quilting sites, tho! But that is about all I do on there and I have only just friends to be able to see what I type! I block all the games stuff that people trys to get me to do! I also chat once in a while with alot of my ole school classmates! Haven't seen them for years!

hannajo 03-12-2011 06:22 PM

I'm on Facebook, and I definitely use the security settings. I don't have any personal info on there besides my name. And I use the setting that blocks farmville and all that stuff from my wall. Anyone who utilizes the security features should not have problems such as identity theft, stalking, etc... I just always remember that whatever I write, I'm writing for the whole world to see.

I love seeing folk's photos, and hearing what they are up to. If someone writes too much offensive or boring stuff, I just hide them so I don't have to read it. I also hide farmville, and all the other games. I have played some of the games myself, and it's probably worth it to be on there for that reason alone.

Karen's Kreations 03-12-2011 06:26 PM

I have one mainly to keep up with pictures of family, friends etc who are out of town. I don't post very often myself but it gives me the opportunity to keep up with high school friends & I've been able to 'find' friends I had lost contact with.

MadQuilter 03-12-2011 06:27 PM

My MIL is very active on FB and she would not understand that I have no interest to "friend" her. So I simply stay off. No problem coz I spend way too much here already.

ksea 03-12-2011 06:30 PM

I was required to have a facebook page by 2 of my professors when I was in school. I got a virus on my computer that the Geek Squad said definetly came from Facebook. It cost me $387 to get my compute fixed so I don't use it unless I am at school on their computers.

ncredbird 03-12-2011 06:37 PM

I have an account only because my kids and granddaughter thought that I should come into the modern world. I post a comment once in a blue moon. I use it mainly as a contact for friends and people that wanted me to contact them from High School that contacted my kids and told them to get me on the web. (If I had wanted to contact them I would have made the effort years ago) I really would rather be spending my time quilting than letting the world know what I am up to every minute. I think people need to be very careful that what they post on FaceBook won't be hurtful to someone else. Some times my kids will comment on something one of their siblings posted. I think you get this false sense of intimacy or security when you are posting to someone else, forgetting that all the world can read it. It is not like having a private conversation, and I have a tendency to put my foot in my mouth. I see it only as trouble looking for a place to happen on too many levels. Ann in TN

Debbie B 03-12-2011 06:37 PM

I have a Facebook page, but I don't really get on it much. If I get a notice that someone has said something I might look and I used to get on to see what Accuquilt had as a question on Fridays to try & win an Accuquilt Go Baby, but I got tired of trying and decided to just buy the Accuquilt Go....ha. Honestly, I don't get Facebook. People write a couple of sentences about anything. I had a cousin actually post "I fixed pork chops for supper tonight". I guess I'm hooked on this quilting board instead!

Coley Banicki 03-12-2011 06:42 PM

I Love facebook lol its my addiction. haha..it where i keep in touch with all my family n friends!

pocoellie 03-12-2011 06:46 PM

I don't do Facebook, if I want to "chat" with someone, I'll do it privately.

ewecansew 03-12-2011 07:30 PM

I have a FB page and quite enjoy it. I have a lot of quilt people on it like Pat Sloan, Bonnie Hunter, Nancy Brenan Daniel. At first I wasn't that comfortable with it, but am careful what I post. All those Farmville type games can be blocked. I have seen some exceptional quilts from award winning quilters through FB. My kids tease me all the time about my 'friends'.

cdufur 03-12-2011 07:54 PM

I have a facebook account and check it everyday. It is no longer just a "gossip" site. It is a social networking site that many, many businesses, including my employer, are using. As with ANY site on the internet, you have to be careful with what you post. If you are posting anywhere on the internet, including this board, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of someone "hacking" your information. This also includes email and blogs. I don't "play games" in facebook and I "hide" every game that someone "suggests" that I play. I have also hidden "friends" because I don't care what they do every minute of the day or I don't want to hear their negativity with EVERY post! Of course I HATE to talk on the phone, so this is my way of visiting. Also, when my "adopted son" was in Iraq, we were able to "talk" every night by messaging on Facebook.

I'm really surprised that the school will let you use their computers for facebook. It is blocked at our school, so students cannot use it.

I love facebook! It's wonderful keeping in touch with family and friends as we are so far away. I have all settings set to private, so there is no lurking from strangers. It's the best way for me to quickly post a message or photos.

cathylynn 03-12-2011 08:18 PM

I have an account and check it daily. my family is back east in Oh and Pa and this is how I keep up on their news. My niece recently had a baby (Travis) and I got to see him via Facebook and Skype. otherwise, I'd miss out. you only put up the info you don't mind people seeing (likes, no addresses except city, no phone #'s, no birthdates, etc) and I only allow access to my family and a few friends.

DogHouseMom 03-12-2011 08:20 PM

Most of my friends/family live in other states or abroad so FB is a great way to keep in touch with them and "share" quick experiences and photo's. I was very skeptical at first though, reading stories about people (mostly dumb people) who got fired, denied a job, or found by police because of FB postings. At the time I joined I was laid off and job hunting. So I joined under a different name. When I sent friend requests to family/friends I sent the request telling them who I really was so they wouldn't think I was a weirdo (well I am, but they still friended me).

I'm not terribly into it, I don't post a lot. Although one late afternoon my husband, myself, and his three kids in England were posting back-and-forth rapidly and we quickly had a "threat" with 150+ posts! It was a hoot then he finally told them to go to bed!!

We're able to see our first grandchild grow up in FB. We were able to be there when she was born, but we can't fly there as often as we would like. She's 9 months old now and took her first steps last week :)

I do Facebook,i have alot of friends there.I don't do the games i just keep track of my family and what there doing.Connie in CO

My Wife and I both have Facebook accounts..we have lots of old classmates as well as family members..we find out lots of stuff on it...We wouldn't have it though but, our DD told us that Facebook wasn't for OLD people...so of course we HAD to sign up.

I think FB is much safer than a blog if you want limited access. You can control the settings and make it so only friends can see your information. A blog? You have absolutely no controls about who reads it.

California Girl 03-12-2011 10:19 PM

Yes but don't put much personal stuff on there. I do post quilt pictures for family and friends to see and sometimes have made a quilting friend in the process. I'm on it every day just to check things out and say hi to family. Some nice games on there when my hands are tired of sewing but the mind is active. Not a bad place in moderation.

You may not have any control over who reads your blog but you have 100% control over what information is shared.

Yes, i love it, its a great way to stay connected to friends and family that live in another state.

meemersmom 03-13-2011 02:05 AM

I never understood it. I don't really care to know that much detail about people I hardly know, why do they care that much about what I do? Also, it is not safe -- you may think your privacy settings will protect you, but check out news reports (cnbc did a great story of FB not long ago) and you will find that nothing is safe or private. If I want to find out how friends and family are doing, I pick up the phone and call. Or email pictures.

sew_southern 03-13-2011 02:54 AM

Love my facebook! I get to "talk" to friends & family who live far away, daily. Or I can get on chat with them on there & have a full conversation!

calano1 03-13-2011 03:17 AM

Let me see .... from 3-8am is get-up, pack lunches &quiet time, put the maid and gardener to work ...
Then from 8-10am it is QB-time ... filling my eyes & mind with other people's beautiful handwork ...
After that I can clear my mind and focus on my own meagre needlework ...
Afternoon I catch up with QB, then I'm off to start dinner ... and catching up with everyone else's day .... and by 8pm its quiet time and off to bed...
Hmmmmm ..... seems I have no time for FB ....:)
I'll leave it to those who have more hours in their day ....

Wendys Quilts 03-13-2011 03:59 AM

I have to say, after reading all of these posts about Facebook has got me thinking. I joined FB to stay connected with family, I dont have many friends. But family I do. I am the one in the family that use to try and call and visit, but did I ever get that in return....NO...then I found that I was the one posting comments on THEIR pages, but no one ever comments on my page when I posted things....EVER. It really hurts my feelings. So now I just limit my comments and my pictures/videos. I now just post pictures of quilts I have done and not post many pictures of my son anymore. Its wierd, I would get more comments on my quilts then I do on my son. Go figure. PLUS, I have stopped calling and visiting like I use to in the past. I am tired of the one always making the EFFORT to stay in touch. In fact, i told my husband the other night not to tell my TWIN sister or brother, if I was ever in the hospital sick or dieing! They wouldnt care anyway...tell my mom and dad but not my siblings.

Okay, sorry for my rant....sore subject I guess hahahahaha

DebbyT 03-13-2011 07:30 AM

Second post re: FB, I intentionaly do not friend my 14 yr old daughter. That way I can monitor that her security settings are blocking all and everything. It displays that she only shares info with friends and she uses a senic picture. I can check her board and photos from my husband's account.

wytetygeress 03-13-2011 07:39 AM

I have a FB account...actually two.. because i play those stupid city and farm games lol. But mostly I have my page to keep in contact with all my family and friends scattered all over the country. I have both set to only friends and stuff..I don't spend no where near as much time there now since i found QB =)

Deborah12687 03-13-2011 07:45 AM

I tried face book and didn't like it and not gonna try it again.

Riversong 03-13-2011 08:19 AM

I have an account, but I must say it bores me. It is the only way I ever see some of my friends and family ,so I check once a week or so,but I seldom post and most generally think its a waste of time, and kind of juvenile.
