My sister knits and I quilt and sew. We exchange gifts all the time.

My sister has given me some gifts she has made -knowing I could make them. Love getting them.

How many times have I seen a posting that has said: "finally I am making a quilt for me". I guess I understand that someone might feel intimidated if their skill was not as developed as the receipient, but it would be nice if they understood it would be welcome because it was made for them.

With all the homemade gifts, quilts, towels, bag holders, sweatshirts and such I have never gotten anything homemade from any of them. the only time I got anything like that was when in a swap.

since my mom died i am the only crafter in the family. my husband's family are not crafters, my son's wife and her family are not crafters. so, no handmade gifts from any family member. they do receive handmade gifts from me but i keep them to a minimum. although they seem to like the things i give them i know they are modern people and like new, store bought most of the time.
however, luckily, i have many friends who are crafters and we often exchange handmade gifts. i love to receive anything someone wants to give me, but treasure those things someone took the time and effort to make for me. i hope they feel the same way about those items i give them. |
Even though I am crafty I would love to get a hand made gift. I have not gotten a gift for several years now except a 20 dollar gift card from my sons at Christmas that I feel bad about because I know they can not afford it . A girl I started writing to when she was in Iraq made me an old fashioned collage a few years ago for my birthday , it meant the world to me :)

Just a designed Snowshoe cat calendar from daughter. I don't care for most of the craft handmade gifts. I've never seen anything in a bazaar or craft show I'd want or use. If there is anything I do want, I've probably already made it for myself. I do give my daughter her "handmade". She gets a new nightgown every year.

Hand made are best since it has a person's time and heart in it :)
I am making microwave fabric bowls this year |
Only once in a while from the grands, and I love them! I also get framed family photographs from the adults, and of course, they are absolute treasures.

One exception is a seam ripper that an online friend made for me. He was researching small items to make with his lathe. I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a prototype. I treasure this gift. . http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ted/ripper.jpg |
