Yes, I am fortunate to have a quilt my dad's mother and grandmother made in the 30's. Unfortunately my mom let me use it on my bed when I was growing up ... needless to say it is in pretty rough shape - but I still cherish it. I'll try to attach a pic.

Sandra Craig 05-29-2010 03:32 PM

yes I have one finished one she did. and I have 2 tops she didn't get finished. I wish I still had my sunbonnet quilt she made me, I loved that, and would spend hours finding the fabric from our dresses hers, mine and my moms

sewingrams 05-29-2010 03:46 PM

My mother left us kids several apiece when she passed away.My two aunts made them. While I was living in Oklahoma a lady there took her mother's dresses and had quilts made from them so that all the grandchildren would have something of hers. I thought that was a super idea because sometimes you just don't know what to do with older clothes.
The children loved them.(they were all grown)

Do you know the name of this quilt (your dearest quilt)? I love it and I know it is so special. I wish I had my grandmothers stuff like that, I do have one of her quilts. It is over 100 yrs. old and I do cherish it highly.

Oh, by the way, the phrase at the bottom on your post, you would not believe how long I have been looking for that quote. It truely describes me. I have been telling my daughters about it and could not find where I put it. So now I have it again. I will try to post my grandmothers quilt. I have to take a picture of it.

Was your husband's grandma Mabel? I suspect that she designed this herself. There are so many unique things about it - the trailing ivy from the central basket - the inidvidual flowers in the outer border, the W I D E scallops - the twisted ribbon frame. I'm not usually drawn to applique quilts, but this one is VERY SPECIAL.

I can't believe he had his tools wrapped in it. Thank goodness they didn't ruin it!

The picture doesn't even do it justice, it's absolutely exquisite

shamrock 05-29-2010 05:16 PM

I have one, but no history. I'm sure it came from my Mother's family. It is hand pieced with scraps, looks like 30's or 40's. Old cotton batting, which I know I have to get it into the bathtub someday to wash it. I understand why we know now to put some isentification on our quilts.

I have a top that my grandmother made in the 1920's and it has silk flowers appliqued on it. The silk has shredded in some places. I took it to a quilt appraiser to see what I should do with it and she told me that I should make a quilt out of it as is and just enjoy the memories of my grandmother. She said not to try to replace the silk because it would not be the same.

I have 3 quilts my great-grandmother made and hand quilted. Two are double wedding ring made from the same fabrics and one is a pattern no one can figure out the name of. Luckily I have three daughters who will each inherit one.

sewnsewer2 05-29-2010 06:39 PM

I have one that I found in my folks house when they passed. I have no idea where it came from. It is not signed and I have never seen it before. I'm thinking it was from my step-dad's side, since no one in my family quilted except me.

Gerbie 05-29-2010 07:12 PM

I had about a lot of quilt tops that were made by my mother's mother or grandmother, that I found in my mother's things after she passed away. I gave my brother some, because his wife at that time sewed. He chose four that he wanted and she said she would finish them, she never did. When they divorced, I was going to finish them but they were no where to be found. We don't know if she gave them away, kept them or threw them away. She didn't know my grandmothers, so they meant nothing to her, but she was mean like that.
I completed three of the ones I kept and gave one to my husband, and one to each of my children. I have yet to finish the two for myself that I still have. I also have a quilt top of Sun Bonnet Sue that my grtgrandmother made for me when I was young. I have kept it in my cedar chest for years and have finally found fabric for the backing and hope to get it finished this summer, along with all of my other projects to do. If I get it done or the other two I will post picts. when I learn how to do that.

Gerbie 05-29-2010 07:13 PM

Oh! Pamela how lucky you are, would love to see them.

Gerbie 05-29-2010 07:21 PM

Crafty Bear I love the orange quilt, absolutely beautiful!!

I love this thread. It is just as good as going to a quilt show. I would like to add a couple pictures and think I finally got it figured out. I really like the one my mom made because it is not a typical grandma's flower garden. Both of these are mostly hand sewn. The blue one does have the binding sewn on by machine.

Made by my grandma before 1951

I don't have any quilts from any one in the family - no quilters. I do have a whole trunk full of crocheted pieces that my grandmother made and several dresser scarves that my mother hand embroidered. I also have a bunch of handkerchiefs that my grandmother crocheted the borders on - some of the borders are two and three inches wide - absolutely beautiful.

Gerbie 05-29-2010 07:38 PM

damaquilts, Who made the sashings? If your grandmother did, I would leve them, that makes it even more special, knowing that a loved one took the time and effort to make it.

SandyinZ4 05-29-2010 07:44 PM

This one (yellow with embroidered flowers) is just exquisite!

Fabricnut 05-29-2010 07:49 PM

I have one my grandmother made in the 1930's. It is a huge starburst pattern all hand sewn.I do not use it on my beds.
But on a weird funny note. My mom made my 2 sons quilts out of blue skiing design polyester and flannel backing in the mid 70's. My boys used their quilts up until the time they had their first child. Now both sets of granddaughters still use these same quilts to sleep with. Needless to say they have been restitched by myself, the other grandmother and or a babysitter or two.

Silver Sandy 05-29-2010 08:01 PM

I have my great grandmothers quilt top (not finished) made out of my great grandfathers silk ties. Some of the material is disingigrating as it was stored in my grandmother's cedar chest. I also have a few squares that she made to complete this quilt top.

The other quilt top is a beautiful star made by my grandmother made. It's a turquoise blue and the star is made up with many different colors. Another work in progress that I must finish.

MISHNJIM 05-29-2010 08:05 PM

I thankfully have my husbands grandmother's mother's wedding ring quilt top. It's not finished and needs some TLC. I was glad that I told his grandmother before she passed away that I want that quilt top. My husband's parents sold the other quilts when they moved her from AL to CA. We were so crushed.

Those are pretty!

I have two quilts from my DH's Grandmother, or Great Grandmother. There are no labels so we don't know which one made them. One is a Double Wedding Ring and has tiny pieces that are pieced to make them big enough to use. The other is a Drunkard's Path. They are in very good shape, both hand quilted, and I have them hanging in our hallway.

I have a cedar chest full of quilts that my dads mom made an I have one that she gave me that I charish.Nobody in the family wanted it because of the colors that were in it they called it ugly.
My Grandmother said she knew someone who would love an use it.An she was right I love an use her quilts all the time.

Born2Sew 05-29-2010 09:58 PM

I have a quilt that my great grandmother hand pieced. She died in 1939 so I know it was done prior to that time. She made the quilt top for my father, but it was never quilted.
After he passed away, I had it hand quilted by the Post Oak Quilters. Daddy also had a quilt top his mother had made. I took it and tacked it together one weekend and gave it back to him for his birthday. Not long ago I brought it over to my house and washed it. Some of the stitches have come out so I plan to take out all of the tacking and repair it, then I will quilt it on my machine. I wouldn't trade either of these quilts for a box of gold.

I have 4 quilts my grandmother made one of them was for my 25th wedding anniversary and one of them was one i helped quilt it was the last one she done she passed away in 98 and I miss her a lot but I can cover with one of quilts and the world seems right. I have a greatgrandson who I let play on them because her main saying was I made this quilt to use don't let me find it in a plastic bag in the closet a used quilt is a loved quilt and all of mine are well loved

KathyKat 05-30-2010 05:36 AM

No one in my family quilted. My mother sewed all my clothes including coats and they were beautiful. A couple of my first husband's aunts made quilts out of scraps and I have two from Aunt Fern that are about 30-40 yrs old. I 've had to re-sew a couple pieces that have come loose but otherwise they are in good condition considering we use them all the time and they get washed often. She always bound hers with prairie points.

eightylady 05-30-2010 05:56 AM

...from my daughter's mil who found it in her mother's attic, old and tattered...i repaired it but have not figured out out to send it

eightylady 05-30-2010 06:06 AM

Pam, it's a treasure...and thanks for the memories of watching my grandmother's friends quilt and chat together as they quilted on one hanging down from the ceiling on a frame. They did so enjoy each other's company! I enjoy the Quilting Board as the next best thing :D

debbieumphress 05-30-2010 06:35 AM

I love my treasures. I am lucky to have 2 from my Great-great Aunt Sadie, two from my mom, one from Grannie, 3 from my MIL. Newer ones are from my GD who is 12, this was her first quilt, one from a dear friend/cousin, and I have 42 quilt tops I rescued from garage sales etc. They are stored in a 1929 chest my Grannie left me and I am keeping them as is. I wish people used quilt labels so I could find the owners familes. And of course I have my eye on a few to get when relatives pass but will wait patiently.LOL

iltoaz 05-30-2010 06:44 AM

I have a nine patch quilt made by my ggm. It was made in the late 20"s or early 30"s. It need a little patching on the binding but all in all it really held up well. It is not "used" here in our home, just for display.

JoanneS 05-30-2010 07:58 AM

SandyinZ4 - beautiful quilts. I wonder if the machine-sewn binding was added by someone else. I am in awe of her doing all of those points on that BIG quilt by hand.

MGW 05-30-2010 02:34 PM

I did it in my first quilt class/group back in the 80's in FL. The teacher (always wondered what happened to her) helped me pick the fabric for the sashings. I like the blue pin dot they are just uneven .

damaquilts 05-30-2010 04:04 PM

I really am loving see all the quilts people have inherited. They are just beautiful.
MGW. You are doing fine. I have a sister in law from Brazil and your post is like her emails so I understand just fine. :-)

Quilt4u 05-30-2010 04:06 PM

No I'm the only one I know of that quilted in my family.

The quilt was made from her own clothes. How awesome!

What an awsome story and what a special keepsake. It doesn't get any better than this craftybear!

I have a quilt my maternal grandmother made for me in high school (45 years ago). I remembering her asking me what colors I wanted in it. It is on our bed now.

We also use a quilt my husbands mother made when the children were young (+50 years ago). There are many shirt fabrics used. She hand-quilted a Baptist Fan design.

My grandmother embroidered a rose pattern on many blocks. I still need to hand quilt it and put together. (It qualifies as a true UFO).

vivianv 05-30-2010 06:17 PM

I have a log cabin quilt that my grandmother made in the late 50's. It was made on a treadle machine and hand tied. It was used hard and needs repair. I have not quilted long enough to have the confidence to try to repair it. I have no idea where to start.
