Do you have any old quilts from your grandmothers or other family?

shaverg 05-27-2010 07:56 AM

I have a couple of my grandmothers and a few tops that I actually don't know who in the family did them.

craftybear 05-27-2010 07:58 AM

I was visiting my parents and my mom showed me a quilt that my dad's mom made years ago. It is all hand pieced and hand quilted (fan pattern). My mom told me it was made in the 1930's or before. My grandmother died the day after I was born as she lived long enough to know she had a granddaughter. My mom told me that I could have that quilt as it was in the will when my dad dies that I get the quilt.

The quilt was made from her own clothes. How awesome!

sewgull 05-27-2010 07:59 AM

I have 2 quilts that my maternal grandmother made. she pasted away June 1949. We also have one that my husband's grandmother made for hime when was a little boy. She used scraps from clothes she had made for him. Thay are treasures.

craftybear 05-27-2010 08:00 AM

If you have any please post a picture for all of us to enjoy on this thread. The next time I go back to mom's will get a photo of the grandmothers quilt.

Sadly no. There were a few quilts made by my Great Grandmother, but my Aunts have them. I'm the only one who quilts in our family. My 1st quilt was a Grandma's Flower Garden, that I made because I wanted one that was like the one I remember playing on as a child. Those pathways made the best race tracks for match box cars. My GGM's quilt was made of feed sacks.

I've been promised a couple from my MIL. One is a top her granny made for her when she was 9 that I had quilted for her when she was 75. The other is a signature quilt from when her grandparents moved from OK to TX in 1923. We'll see. Her daughter may beat me to them...which would be absolutely okay. I'd probably give them to her anyway. My MIL is one of those people who won't use anything like that cause she doesn't want to ruin them. Her quilt looks like it was just made. It's really beautiful. I made her one with all of her kids, grandkids, great grands and spouses on it. I don't think it's ever made it out of the closet. But it's not dirty LOL.

GrammaNan 05-27-2010 08:11 AM

I have what is left of a quilt my great grandmother made. Most of it is in shreds. I am considering cutting out pieces that are in good shape and framing them. I would like to give them as gifts to my brothers and nieces.

GrammaNan 05-27-2010 08:13 AM

I just remembered that I have a quilt that my MIL made. It was made in 1974 out of polyester scraps from some of my old clothes. It is a hexagon pattern and boy is it heavy! It is a great winter quilt. I will try to post a picture.

Pamela Artman 05-27-2010 08:16 AM

I am so lucky to have a collection of quilts from seven generations. My great great grandmother, my great grandmother, my grandma, my mom, myself, my daughter, and my granddaughters. This is my most prized possession!

ginnie6 05-27-2010 08:17 AM

I have one quilt my Grannie made. Its a rail fence one made out of polyester. it was made sometime in the 70"s. It was handpieced and I have done tons of repair work on it and it seems anytime anyone even looks at it more seams come undone. But I treasure it anyway. I also have some Sunbonnet Sue blocks she made. I made lapquilts for my sisters and mother using some of the blocks for Christmas this past year. My avatar pic shoes one of the lapquilts.

Up North 05-27-2010 08:25 AM

I have 3 from a great aunt, a dresden plate in rough shape a sunbonnet sue that was mine when I was little and a baby quilt she gave to my oldest son. I also have a top made for my mom by her mom for her wedding, never finished and not the prettiest, It has a few holes in one of the fabrics, I will finnish it someday!!

quiltsRfun 05-27-2010 09:41 AM

My mom has a quilt made by her grandmother, crazy quilt blocks made by her mother and a quilt made by my Dad's mother. I'm hoping at least one will come my way someday. I have the baby quilt my mom made for me. I'll be passing it on to my youngest daughter. (Oldest daughter was the first grandchild and got a quilt made by GM.)

I have a collection of quilts made by my husband's grandmas

FunkyMonkey 05-27-2010 10:20 AM

I have a quilt top .. the story according to my mother is: that her mom's grandmother made it, she made three tops and mine is the only one left, the other sisters "lost" theirs along time ago. According to my Aunt Clanny, she said that "granny" didn't make that top. I kind of tend to go with my mothers version as her mother told it to her and she would know best. One of these days I am going to quilt it. It has to be at least 60 years old or my guess, is older.

Dancing Needle 05-27-2010 10:22 AM

I have one from my Grandma that she made back in the early 1930's while she was recovering from an accident. It's beautiful and I will treasure it always! :)

Ms Grace 05-27-2010 10:30 AM

We have 1 from DH's grandma.
It's an old bowtie quilt.
It's very heavy.

One of my great grandmothers made this one. It is hand pieced, and I believe that it was quilted at a quilting bee, there is a large variation in the quilting. (Typical of being quilted by many hands).

Pearl crossed Texas in a covered wagon as a girl, and her claim to fame is that she was Bonnie Parker's, (Bonnie & Clyde), 3rd grade school marm.

Made by Pearl Bynum Cox circa 1930

This quilt was made my another great grandmother who was wheel chair bound for the last few years of her life. After she was diagnosed with terminal cancer she hand pieced 3 tops, this is mine. (My mother has the other 2). She died when her only daughter, my grandmother was only 16. Counting Effie, down to my daughter, that makes 5 generations with one girl child.

I wonder about Effie, I hope she was thinking that one day someone would consider this a treasure.

Hand pieced by Effie Lucas, Ontario Canada

as a child I slept under antique (even then!!) quilts - sure wish I had them now... they were my great great granmother's I think

Melinda in Tulsa 05-27-2010 01:14 PM

I have several my Granny made. She was born in 1876 and died in 1953. I treasure them.

Shelbie 05-27-2010 01:19 PM

My only quilt from my grandmother is made of wool suiting material scraps and backed with grey striped pillow ticking fabric. The squares that make up the top are a mixture of reds, browns and blacks although I can't imagine anyone having ordered a red wool coat or pants back then in order to get these scraps. It was made in 1910 by my grandmother and her two sisters for her wedding in April 1912. Her sister Cecilia ran a tailoring shop in Guelph Ontario so had plenty of scraps. The quilt is heavy and was always on my mother's bed as a child and then on mine. My mom memded it many times (she used coloured denim and corduroy and I've mended it too although I got old wool suiting scraps from one of the older ladies at church who kindly shared a shoe box full. It's not a beautiful quilt but it is one of the very few possessions left from my grandmother who died in 1937. My daughter who is named after her great-grandmother will inherit it someday.

We had one old quilt (over 100 years old now) from my maternal grandmother. My sister found a simple stuffed cat pattern, and cut and sewed the quilt pieces into stuffed cats for each of us. It was a wonderful way to share one quilt among 7 women. I have a small piece of a crazy quilt my other grandmother did. That's all I have of theirs. We have one quilt from my DH's family, but we have no information on it. Found it in with his mother's things years after she passed, when his dad passed, it was in there.

I have a double wedding ring quilt that my great grandmother, grandma and my mom made . The quilt was probably made in late teens or early 1920's. It is entirely hand made, little squares about 1 inch in size, no machine stitching. I posted it earlier, I think under double wedding ring quilts.

CAROLJ 05-27-2010 05:54 PM

Embroidered, full size. Gold and beige embroidery.

I've been thinking of asking this very question. Glad you did. I have a quilt that has been handed down through the years to the oldest daughter in the family. Happened to be me this go 'round. It's a quilt that was made before the Civil War. During the war, it was buried in the ground to hide it from the Yankees (the original family was in Virginia). I'll post a picture in the next few days. You can even see the cotton seeds when the quilt is held up to the light.

Pam 05-27-2010 06:14 PM

Woodster, I can hardly wait to see it.

Yes, I love my families quilts! These came from both my side of the house and my husband's family. And, I might add, because of the precise handpiecing and handquilting of my precious relatives, I never let myself quilt because I did not want to place myself within their critical eyes. That makes me sad now that they have all passed because I know they would have only encouraged me even more and taught me so much. However, I am presently in my sixties and slowly self-teaching myself the art of quilting. I truly love it!

I have the one and only quilt my mother (and I - age 10) made. She used wools and tweeds on one side and cottons on the other. All the fabric was from her stash from all the clothes she had made us over the years. I never knew my Mom to wear store bought clothes.
All the pieces were 3 inch squares and then tied, not quilted. It's really heavy, but my Dad liked the weight of it on their bed.

And finally, my dearest quilt......I remember Mother's aprons, my sister's school costumes and the stories Mother told me of her Mother's swatches. These blocks stayed in a box during my childhood and she would let me carefully play with them. "One day", she always said, "I will finished them." And sure enough she did at the age of 91. Notice the whiteness of today's fabric blocks compared to the old blocks. Shortly after finishing the quilt, Alzheimer began stealing her mind and her ability to even do embroidery work. She passed about a year later. I miss her and wish she could see my quilting.

I have some quilts by my paternal grandmother (one hexagons, one triangles), a top made by a paternal great-grandmother and quilted by my grandmother (carpenter star), and a quilt made by my maternal great-grandmother (squares). My wife has a couple of quilts from her maternal grandmother (one squares, one Sunbonnet Sue). Only two of them are in good enough shape to use, but they are still treasures.

I have two quilt tops that were made by my dad's mom. The smaller of the two have a few squares missing out of it. The larger one just needs to be put together. And then I have pieces and some hexagon shapes there is even a metal template for the hexagon shape. They were all hand done. I am afraid if I try to do anything to them I will mess them up. Still in the thinking process. The hexagon things scare me, the pattern looks so complicated and the pieces are so small. Some day I will try to remember and take a picture of the tops and pieces. My grandma passed away when I was really young, so the tops have been around awhile.
I also have a wedding ring quilt that my bosses gave me years ago, it was completed.
And a crazy quilt from my dad's mother I believe. It has seen better days need to see what I can do to help it have more days.
It is really neat to read the stories behind everyone's quilts.

All Thumbs -

I can relate to your mother's illness, because both my grandmothers died after long battles with Alzheimer's. I'm glad you have the beautiful quilt to remind you of your mother's better times. I know it brings you a smile of joy to see it and remember her.

My great grandmother and my great aunt made this quilt in the mid 1950's. She hand pieced and hand quilted a quilt for each of her grandchildren. She had 8 children and they all had big families so that's a lot of stitching!

craftybear 05-27-2010 08:56 PM
