Favorite Fabrics 08-31-2009 04:54 AM

I do... it's a pair of chrome Gingher shears that I bought probably 25 years ago. I liked these so much that over the years I bought a few more pairs of what I thought would be identical shears. But somehow the newer ones never had quite the same solid, firm feel to their cut.

Anybody out there have a favorite pair of shears? What kind do you like best?

Riversong 08-31-2009 05:27 AM

I love my little thread snips!!! With a rotary cutter I seldom use regular scissors..

Quilt4u 08-31-2009 05:42 AM

All I have is Gingher. I love them.

Marcia 08-31-2009 05:54 AM

My favorite pair of scissors is a 6" chrome Gingher. I use them for EVERYTHING!!! I have had them for years and never had to have them sharpened---they are THE BEST!!!!

I have the chrome Ginghers, ( present from mom for twentyfirst B'day)they were the only kind I used for years for sewing clothes & crafts. They have a distinctive ting when closed without
material between the blades, my children would try and sneak them to use and I would hear it and say Who has MY SCISSORS! They were always mystified how I knew that they had them. I picked up the black handled Horn ones at the local thrift store( for $.50 ) they cut like butter and of course now that I quilt , I could not live without my rottary cutter.

I hate those scissors that have a different size hole for each thumb. Maybe because I'm left-handed, but they just seem obnoxious to me.

I really miss my old pair of La Cross scissors. They weren't as big as the sewing scissors, but the thumb holes were the same size and they were made of good metal, not that stuff most scissors have today. La Cross still makes scissors, but mostly the small cosmetic kind, like for fingernails and moustaches.

Gennynut 08-31-2009 07:00 AM

Hi from an other lefty ! I use to use righthanded scissors upside down in order for them to work.lol I have left handed Fiskars now. have to hide them so they don't get used for paper etc.

Bettia 08-31-2009 07:15 AM

Also love my Ginghers!!

redkimba 08-31-2009 08:42 AM

I have a set of Gingher shears that my Grandmother gave me years ago. They are my favorite.

I also have a set of embroidery scissors that looks like a stork. they are missing. :( I'm ready to tear the house apart to find them.

Scissor Queen 08-31-2009 09:10 AM

For what is my question. So many scissors, so little time!! :D

I have a whole bunch of pairs I really love, so I guess my answer would have to be yes but not just one pair. I have favorites for cutting fabric, snipping thread ends, cutting out appliques, etc.

AbbyQuilts 08-31-2009 09:12 AM

I have a pair that I bought from our grooming blade sharpening guy. He had some sewing scissors in with the grooming shears and I bought them and love them.
No brand but they are heavy and metal and I can get them re sharpened by
the same guy if I need it

They remind me of the type of scissors my mom use to use when she was a seamstress

quiltluvr 08-31-2009 09:51 AM

Gingher here too. One of my next purchases (when I get thru the list of fabric I want first---like THAT will ever happen) is to get the rotary cutters. They just look sleek. I hope I wouldn't be disappointed in how they feel in my hand tho'.

Jim's Gem 08-31-2009 10:25 AM

I have a pair of Marks shears that I bought about 23 years ago. Great scissors. They do better than my Ginghers

shaverg 08-31-2009 11:09 AM

I also have 6 pair of ginghers everything from the gold stork embroidery to the black plastic handle shears which I love. But really love all of them.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 08-31-2009 11:28 AM

I have two pairs of henkels scisors, and I love them. A big pair, and a small pair for details, thread snipping etc.

Some of my scissors. This is just a drop in the bucket.

BellaBoo 08-31-2009 12:59 PM

I have so many scissors I don't want to count them. My favorite pair and the only kind I buy now are Fanmore brand. They will cut thorough layers of fabric right down to the tip. They beat my Ginghers and cost much less.

I have never heard of the Fanmore brand. Where did you purchase them?

RedGarnet222 08-31-2009 01:42 PM

I have ginger's sissors in three sizes, also the pinking shears and the full sized applique/bill tip too. I love them they are a wonderful brand.

But, I have some fiskars that are the kind that spring back on thier own for crafts. Oh, and I agree about the thread snips, they save so much work at the sewing machine! I just got a pair of machine embroidery sissors for the quilting table that are cool too. They get right down there to the fabric and open by themselves like the fiskers.

The cutest ones I have are some very old ones in a velvet presentation box with pink satin inside. They are small sewing sissors, a thimble and a seam ripper that looks like a sword. By wilkenson sword. My sis bought it for me.

BellaBoo 08-31-2009 02:00 PM

Sorry I spelled it wrong. It's Famore

http://famorecutlery.com/quilting.aspx I've seen their booth at every big quilt show. I buy the comfort blue handle ones. At Paducah their booth was always busy and I heard the vendor say we are down to our last box of blue handle scissors. Quilters were buying them faster than they could open the boxes. I was up front and was able to get a pair. I'm glad I did. They are great. They were $18.

sewhappy57 08-31-2009 02:14 PM

Hello from another lefty. I LOVE my Ginger lightweight sissors, I have 4 pairs everywhere I might sew. I also have my eye on the Ginger rotary cutter, maybe I'll just have to treat myself to a nice Present just because. :D

jbud2 08-31-2009 02:18 PM

Scissor Queen!! You mustn't have any kids at home right now!!
When my kids were little, my scissors always had legs. I had a pair of Wiss I think the name is, that they did not touch or they were in real BIG trouble. Now the kids are out on their own, and I have a Fiskars I use a lot. I wrote on the orange handle - fabric only - no paper - tied a red ribbon to - so my husband wouldn't use it! I did ask him to drop it all at the hardware store last weekend to get it sharpened - I hit a pin!! - but I think he was too embarassed by the looks of the scissors!

Eddie 08-31-2009 02:22 PM

I have a pair of Ginghers and love them. It's like driving a Cadillac of scissors.

dlf0122quilting 09-03-2009 07:20 AM

I have a friend who swears by "Kai" brand scissors. They have a bery finely serated blade and never need sharpening. She bought them as a packaged deal of 3 sizes at a Quilt Show. That is what I am going to look for at the San Diego Quit Show on the 17th. I don't have good luck with scissors. Have fat thumbs and the scissor hole for the thumb gets hung up on my thumb knuckle. Therefore I only use scissors when I have to.

Do any of you find that cutting batting dulls your scissor fast? Seems that no matter what brand of batting I use, my scissors dull on it.

brendadawg 09-03-2009 07:21 AM

I, too, have a pair of chrome Ginghers that were a gift about 30 years ago, and I feel the same way about them. That was the one pair of scissors that I finally convinced my children they would only touch them under penalty of death (LOL) -- and somehow that worked.

I like the Fiskars "softtouch", the ones that have straight handles rather than holes. They are so much easier on these old hands of mine. I have tendonitis in my thumb, and it really hurts if I use the regular scissors for very long.

Just my two cents worth.

lfw045 09-03-2009 07:33 AM

Another lefty here and self proclaimed scissor freak! I love the titanium blade Westcott scissors as well as my little pair of Singer scissors that are sharp pointed with stainless steel blades. Those are my favorites!

Even when I had kids at home they knew better than to touch mother's scissors. Hammers and screwdrivers on the other hand disappeared very regularly.

My hubby will enter the sewing room and announce "I need this cut" and hand it to me. He wouldn't even dream of picking up one of my pairs of scissors. He has his own pairs of paper cutting and package opening scissors. There are scissors of one kind or another in every room of this house.

BellaBoo 09-03-2009 07:58 AM

I have read that cutting paper will dull scissors is not true anymore. ? because paper has different content now and scissor blades are stronger and hold an edge much longer. I don't have a paper scissor or fabric scissor, I just pick up whatever one is closest and cut. As my DH said( when he used my scissors to cut a tarp because they cut fast and smooth), Hon, it's only a pair of scissors, buy new ones when you want to.

The pair of scissors we have that are labeled paper won't cut anything else. The scissors we use for general utility work are those carbon steel Chinese scissors. Those things will make quick work of practiacally any packaging. We even have a pair of those scissors that will cut pennies in half. They aren't much good for anything else but hey, if I need a penny cut in half I have the scissors to do it with. LOL

pflum1 09-03-2009 10:45 AM

My favorite pair of scissors are the Profession KIA. I have several pairs of Ginghers and thought they were O.K. till I got the Kia. I also like Marks scissor for a few things.

nellebelles 09-03-2009 02:07 PM

My husband and I have many pairs of Gingher scissors--they are just the best. We bought all of them on Ebay--if you watch, you can get them for a really good price. The ones I use the most would be the 4" embroidery scissors.

JoanneS 09-03-2009 08:31 PM

I like my other Ginghers so much that I bought their curved blade ones for my embroidery/quilting machine. Love 'em. I don't even have to 'snip' because the blade is so sharp - thus no danger of cutting the fabric whilst it's in the hoop.

Butterflyspain 09-04-2009 12:45 AM

I recently bought a pair of Titanium scissors and they are a dream to work with. They cut through 6 layers of fabric without a problem, howevr they advertise them as cutting through 40 layers of fabric. i am just not brave enough to cut through that many layers at once.

Got mine at Keepsake Quilting cost $15.99 plus P & P

SOUNDS LIKE I'M GONNA PUT GINGHER SISSORS ON MY CHRISTMAS LIST.
BUT HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR FAMILY FROM FINDING THEM. IT SEEMS LIKE SOMETHING IS MISSING FROM MY SEWING ROOM WHENEVER I GO TO LOOK FOR IT. THEY TAKE NOT ONLY SISSORS BUT MY BLUE TAPE, MARKING PENCILS, TAPE MEASURE AND OTHER MISC ITEMS. I'VE PURCHASED THESE THINGS FOR "HOUSEHOLD" USE BUT FOR SOME REASON THESE ITEMS ARE ALWAYS MISSING AND THEY KNOW RIGHT WHERE TO GO FOR AN EASY FIND.
ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS AS MOST WELCOME.

Bevanger 09-04-2009 05:53 AM

I bought my FISKARS years ago and I love it. :D

HEY - THAT'S NOT A BAD IDEA! MAYBE I COULD PUT LOCKS ON THE DRAWERS THAT THEY ARE STORED IN AND THEN PLACE THE KEY IN MY SAFE THAT HAS A COMBINATION LOCK.
GOSH - I FEEL LIKE I'M HIDING THE NATION'S TOP SECRET MEMOS OR SOMETHING!

If you tell your family not to borrow or use your items without permission and they still do it, that's so wrong.
